Grinding parallels on the Grizzly G5963 surface grinder

  • Re visiting my parallels I previously ground last year on the Grizzly G5963. Quality of the grind was adequate for shop use but not great. I've improved my wheel balancing technique, installed a custom high precision DRO with the help of my Bambu X1C Carbon 3D printer and am achieving much better results.
    Scale, 200mm travel: www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
    DRO ttl standard: www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
Enclosure is 3D printed and was designed around this DRO.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I just have a faulty 5 volt ac to dc adapter, will have to check. This is somewhat new to me so just to be clear you made the connection to the ES-19 at the two wire terminals marked 5 volts on the back of the display. My unit didn't so much as light up when I did this. Thanks for your time and video.

When grinding long parts without coolant they must be set at an angle to prevent overheating in the middle. Grinding the whole length in one pass will expand the parallels in the middle leaving a dip when cooled. This is vital where there is no power traverse as the wheel moves too slowly over the part by hand causing heating.

That’s excellent advice. I’ve seen that done and it makes total sense.

When we made parallels at school the first op grind after heat treat was done holding the raw parallel in a grinding vise with the top surface indicated as good as we could manage.
I’m also working with a mag chuck that has unknown geometry.
Circling back to the grinding vise fixture, I’ve had good results grinding flat parts by raising my work up off the chuck and again held in the vise, minimizing my reliance on the chuck flatness.
    Good work, 👍

Grinding the first face in a vice eliminates the magnetic chuck pulling out any bow from heat treatment. If the first face was ground flat directly on the chuck, once released the bow would return.

Love your set-up. Did you consider mounting the scale on the back of the machine, where it might be a little more protected from dust and debris?

Humm, no I didn’t. I like the idea and will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion and stopping by.

Thanks again for your time. I have been inspired by your set-up as I have a very similar grinder (Targa brand). Just before I order from the sources you supplied, I'm hoping you can clarify which iteration of the DRO you chose? there seems to be a few variations available, .. ttl standard, ttl with RS232, RS422 standard and another one I can't recall at the moment. I'm assuming you are still happy with your configuration and frankly those various designations are beyond my knowledge at this point. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

TTL standard. Very happy with the setup.

I hope you can help me again as I'm trying to duplicate the set up you are using on your grinder. Having gotten the components, I realize I don't know what to use as a power source and how and where it connects to the system. ( no instructions on either component ).And perhaps a second question, .... will the Easson ES-19 be able to accurately display the very fine increments the scale is capable of? Thanks again.

Great to see some progress- did you scrape those parallels? And how about that dust collection attachment- is that original to the grinder or did you make that? I've thought about making one for my Reid grinder.
Somebody is going to say you should wet grind these, and I tend to think the same because that's what I do, but I know you're going to get there anyway.
You probably already know this , but a spark- out pass or two, especially after a finishing pass, will clean up some of those spots. Also what you mentioned about the magchuck distorting the part is real- and there is a Don bailey video where he shows a trick to avoid this. He turns the magchuck on and then off again and has the part held on by just the residual magnetism.

Yes, I saw that video too. You have to be a pro though. The chances of loosing your part bc not enough magnetism is something I tried once and failed. Dust collection is custom (plasma cut parts and welded). The hose is secured at the back with 3D printed parts. Parallels are not scraped, just looked like that with the light against a poorly ground parallel.

Hi! I have the same grinder and want to mount DRO. My first question is if You mount it the way you did it wil it not collide with magnetic bed when you are going down? Second question is when you bought this addition for dust collecting by vacum cleaner? If it is 2d printed do u have model files maybe? Thanks in advance for the answer. Greetings from Poland! ;-)

The head can go all the way up and down without running into anything. I had to pay close attention to this before drilling holes but it worked great. Welcome to the channel, we love Poland.

Dust collector is simple sheet metal cut with a plasma cutter. I don't have files, sorry.

Yes Sir. Nice job. That's why i don't have a channel the headache of the buttheads that can't just not like a video ,or even comment on it negative way . There's a right and wrong way about everything. And who knows how many ways in between. *Usually two per motion (direction, axis, etc.) lol machine joke.
Anyway back to it. Here a person goes out of their way* lol..
to make a video to share it for free soo maybe others can benefit. And whammy all the negativity badslurs is uncalled for. Yeah if someone doing it 100 percent wrong for whatever reason there's still a nice way*😂 to tell them. And who knows why there doing it like that. Maybe don't know correct (don't want to say )way*😅. And yes haters i know it's spelled differently. Its a joke.
Now back to it. Or dont have money to get the equipment to do it correctly. we know how much junk equipment cost. So good to fair, not great nor nowheres near great cost. And instead of people offering to help in a polite manner, yes it can be done people. It's easy, probably a lot easier than doing negative slurs. And then causing this creator to finally have to take time to go back an edit or how ever they do it. To technical for me and delete some horrible comments so youngens don't have to see it. Or anyone really. Taking time away from them making us another great video to watch and learn from. If it not ur cup of tea,or how you do it and hate it shoot push thumbs down even say something like that's not how id do that. Or i think that's not very safe,or not correct way*. Or skip it turn the channel. Oh no you get these slurs so bad sometimes makes devil blush.
But that's the way * it is and probably always be in this world. So you Sir i applaud you.👏🏻👏🏻 Can't wait to check ur channel out .
Sorry on the long rant and rambling on an on. Just really gets to me when see slurs vulgar bad comments on video ment to help. People commenting probably doesn't even have a surface grinder or mill . Then when its so bad you got to take time and tell it. That's just pitiful. IDK how you all do it. I couldn't. So thanks again an ill apologize for the potty mouth idiots. Keep on making them great videos we love um. Stay safe ill see ya in next video. From ur ole hillbilly buddy.
