The group's name is pronounced "Boys". Their lead singer and guitarist, Bill Kelly, is alive and well in Nashville. The group, founded by Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzik (RIP, from Jeddo Boro, PA) later became Dakota. The song rose to #14 in 1971. Three men were trapped in a mine. Two of the three ate the third, Timothy.

Didn't know about the name change...I always remembered The Bouys and thanks for the heads-up. This is another great classic from the 70s and is up there with other great ballads like Marty Robbins Old El Paso, Dead Mans Curve and Jim Croce, etc.

Just curious, but are you still on YT?
How's your life been in the past 12 years? Has it been enjoyable?
No reason for the comment...just a curious person

I was a teenager attending St John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA. The best band, and a real treat for us, was when the Buoys showed up at Friday night dances in our gym. The Buoys debuted Timothy at the SJHS gym just before I graduated in 1970. The basic story was well known in the NE PA area where there were many mine cave-ins. So, although we all knew the song was about the cannabalism of a miner, none of us were shocked and we damn sure knew it wasn't a mule!

I was in college when this was 1st released by The Buoys. Everyone loved it! Then... Everyone started actually listening to the lyrics! OMG! They ATE TIMOTHY! 😱 Apparently many radio stations started listening at the same time - or parents started calling about it - because it just disappeared off the radio play lists except for late night request shows! 😅 Just a bit of trivia from where I grew up.

It,s in my library, I find myself returning to it time and time again. i,ve often wondered if the radio management people ever really listened to this masterpiece. Thanx jdzine. 8Moody1

At first they did, then it got banned. I heard that how it got popular is one radio station would ban it, then edgy teenagers would prank another station into playing it.

The buoys played at our all night party at the Mayfair Supper Club in June of 1969 Wyoming Area High School. My best friend and I followed them from the Buoys, Dakota, and the Jerry Kelly Band for the next 35 years or so. They were a super group from the Wyoming Valley, miss them!!

@8moody1 Dakota, in spite of some inaccurate information around TH-cam, was never called the Buoys. They were two different groups. But Bill Kelly, who is singing lead on this video by Dakota, WAS the lead singer of the Buoys and sang the original hit. He still sounds exactly the same - meaning GREAT! He was in both groups but they were otherwise different groups, except bass player Jerry HLUDZIK who was also a member of the Buoys. But Dakota had an entirely different sound and repertoire.

Hey, TomTIGER69, sorry to tell you but they are not lip synching this song. Nor is the music pre-recorded. What instrument exactly is it that you hear that is not on stage??? They added some horns and a violin during the chorus' of the recorded song. Do you hear them in this performance? With your superior listening ability you should be able to tell they used the keyboard to fill those parts in this live performance. Maybe you are just used to the modern, no-talent 15 year olds that have to lip sync everything and don't realize that there are/were really talented musicians and singers that could actually perform live! I was at this show and they played about 2 hours of live music with so much audience interaction that it would be near impossible to pre-stage anything!

I just love a song with a bouncy beat about cannibalism.

I remember the song well but I also remember at the end there was a crunching that sounded like bones being chewed. That seems to be missing now

This song is awesome. Luckily, back then, I lived in a city that didn't ban it.

Kings of Leon copy this group? LoL. But this singer is brilliant. They should've done more, but record labels should have encouraged more songs-- I blame greed for not making these guys bigger. Very nice retro alt feel.
