I take an empty neck pillow “pillow case” then stuff it with clothing items (sweater, scarf etc) that I’ll be using anyway. Takes up no space, but becomes a pillow if I need it

Great idea. On a long walking trip in Europe I took a small feather pillow in a half size pillow slip. In some hostels I needed my own pillow and I put my fleece jacket in the pillow slip with the feather pillow on top of it. It was very comfortable.

I used to way overpack! Multiple outfits everyday, and several shoe options. I now use a travel capsule wardrobe, and if something can't be worn twice, it doesn't go! I absolutely adore using packing cubes, though! I can't pack without them.

The only good thing about checking a bag is reduce the stress of getting a spot in the overhead bin especially if you are stuck in the back of the plane. But on the other hand, the bag can't get lost when you keep it with you.

Just FYI you were probably using the pillow backwards. The open side goes toward the back. The fully closed side goes under your chin to hold your head up and give it support. Much easier to sleep that way, no neck pain.

I have always packed light for every trip and recently I've found another way to lighten my load and get through TSA faster. I have replaced my liquid items, like shampoo and lotion, with the solid versions of the same thing. So I have lotion, soap, shampoo, and conditioner in bar form. They are much lighter then the liquid version, pack easier, and I don't worry about spills. Now I just need to find sun block and mosquito repellant in bar form.

Put my peanut butter in plastic bag in liquid bag instead. Heathrow takes that, considers creamy PB a liquid! Soon, liquid rule is going to change

I agree with the neck pillow thing, however I now use an inflatable rectangular Kathmandu pillow because it folds into its own little bag and I can use it on flights, and I swear the amount of times I’ve used it in hotels/hostels when the pillows were super thin just makes it worth it (I often half inflate it and put it under the supplied pillow)

  • @ellybea68

Yes I agree. The neck pillow has been on the scrap heap for years! Even flying from Australia to Europe, I just don’t use it and it’s not worth the space it takes up. I always take one or two tiny tubes of shampoo, toothpaste etc, but if I need more… they have shops everywhere I go. I do use packing cubes however, as I find it helps to keep my bag organised. I travel with a 21 inch soft-sided carryon bag with wheels for trips of 2-3 months at a time. I have learnt to be quite ruthless when packing but sometimes I take too much and end up posting “stuff” home. My prized possession and space saver is my mini iPad. It gets rid of all the paper I used to lug around in my bag. It’s always loaded with books to read, I can manage my email on the road, book flights and accommodation, keep in touch with friends and family. I’d be lost without it. The true secret to packing light though is in the clothes we take. Having a small and versatile capsule wardrobe is key. I like 5o keep it to no more than 13-14 items of clothing (plus a swimsuit and underwear). All the other “stuff” has to stay at home.

Years ago, after they recovering from a C5/6/7 fusion, I bought one of those foam neck braces at the pharmacy because I was a little leary of possibles turbulence. I made a little scarf slipcover so it wasn’t so obvious and it worked so well that I now fly with it always. It folds together and takes up very little space when not in use but when I have it on I can sleep with my head totally supported and my neck relaxed so I’m not flopping around.

Your video is giving me courage. I’m doing a 3 week vacation in Europe (4 countries) with a teen and a 1 1/2 year old and based on my last experience I decided that carryons had to be the way to go. I got a pocket-it stroller, 2 carryons and 2 personnel items. The packing cube tip and the neck pillow (I was really torn on bringing one or not) is giving me more common sense to think about.

This is an honest reason why I haven't utilized the large bottles of shower products that hotels are switching to now: I don't know what's in them. These are bottles that staff and previous guests have full access to, and I know there are people who do gross things and I don't want one of those gross things ending up in my hair. I know this sounds funny, but I'm very serious. I'm good with the sample sizes, but if a hotel has switched to the large bottles, then I would have to bring my own hair and shower products.

Also, in my experiance often hotels drench towels and sheets in disinfectant (probably so they can save on hot water washes) and my skin is not having it.

Eagle Creek has(had?) a "tube cube" similar in size to the rectangular cubes that you showed. I'm not sure if they're still available from Eagle Creek, but I bought one in January for my last cruise. I already had one that I purchased along with all my Eagle Creek cubes & pouches. The rectangular ones fit nicely between the channels created by the telescoping handle of my suitcase. 👍🏻

I have also paired down my toiletries a lot and they typically all fit in one small zip bag. I opt for solids (lotion and shampoo bars) versus liquids whenever possible, but especially on single bag trips. I don't want to spend time cleaning everything because something spilled in my bag (even ziplocs are not a guarantee!).
I do still use my packing cubes, but I think you're right about it being a pro or con based on the style of bag you use. I often travel with a backpack, so I still like being able to group like items and keep them organized if I need to rummage and fish something out of the bottom. (I also like being able to put the packing cubes straight into the hotel drawers if I'm staying more than one night.)

I travel a lot toon before the pandemic I even had a job where I travelled internationally every week, but I swear by packing cubes for getting more into my bags and keeping my clothes less wrinkled (but you have to really fill the cubes). I've tried rolling and I haven't worked out how to do it in a way that doesn't make the clothes incredibly crushed and certainly doesn't save space. Therefore, since I do believe you know what you're talking about, could you a really detailed demonstration of how you roll clothes for packing? including fine stuff like silk, Jersey material, denim, synthetics, bulky sweaters etc?
i carry a thin sheet of plastic (it's actually a kitchen cutting sheet) that use to help me fold clothes to exactly the right size for my packing cubes...which makes them fill out into the corners and holds the clothes in the cubes in a way that crushes less..maybe that's why it works so well for me. I also use all different sizes of cubes.

I agree about using the hotel lotion until……I traveled to Alaska pre-Covid and found that none of the hotels provided lotion! Yeah, one thing I do if I don't see what I need in a hotel is run out to a corner shop or store ( but I imagine in Alaska it sort of depends where you are). When I travel around the continental US and Europe I can usually find toiletries I need at a grocery store or pharmacy. But there's always those "holy grail" things I don't think I can find like my brand of deodorant, pads, and hair styling products.

I wash my hair less frequently if we're in a dryer climate, so it's not a big deal to use the provided hair dryer 1-2 times in exchange for the additional space in my carry-on bag.

So interesting to hear you say you don't use packing cubes! I have found that I don't use them either when I use a carryon. However, when I am using a larger suitcase, i do use them. It's easier to keep me organized. I have also contemplated not taking a sleeping pillow. Thanks for your honest insights! And I also appreciate how you stress everyone needs to find what works for them! So much freedom to experiment and give things up.

Ohhhh! The neck pillow. Yeah. That's going AWAY! All three of us brought varying sorts on our long haul flight to London this month and all three of us HATED them and they were just a bother to bring home. We did bring them home, but they will be given away. We just didn't like them. We traded. We squished. We altered the way they are used. Nothing worked. So, buh bye! 🤣 But my Eagle Creek packing cubes . . . They are my thing and I love them so much. I especially love the small ones for my weird odds and ends I tend to bring with me.
For short trips, however, I am altering the way I think I "need" things in my carryon. It's getting better with each trip.

I traveled for years and when I first started, I carried WAY too much junk. Now I can get by with roughly 75% less. I do take my Bose noise cancelling headphones (worth the $$) for long flights. I also take my own toiletries, but I buy big bulk sizes to keep at home and put what I need in travel size bottles. Never thought I would say it, but I do miss traveling for work.

I *always* do carry-on if I have to change flights. The few times I’ve had luggage go astray has been on trips with multiple flights. (And I use packing cubes for my carry-on). Only drawback is limiting the weight for carry-on to 10kg for European flights.

In Australia it is 7 kg carryon. If I need to rake hiking boots or strong shoes for walking I’m over the limit or I have to wear them on my feet. Recently I did two weeks in carryon size luggage. On the way home I got to carry it in the cabin because I isn’t have any luggage to check in.

I have never used any of those items except the travel cubes. And I decided on my latest trip that they actually take up more room, I think I will go back to using the 2 quart r 3 quart plastic bags. I have been traveling with a carryon only since 1998 on 21 day trip around Europe. I have never felt I needed more clothes. Every top goes with any of my 3 pairs of pants and over the years looking back at pics of those trips what is seen in most pics are the jackets or sweaters I had on. Rarely did my tops show unless it is a summer vaca but I don’t normally travel in the summer, too hot for me.

You don’t have to check prescription gels, creams, lotions and other liquids… as long as they are prescribed and in their original container(s). I’ve travelled with a prescription gel in my carry-on twice in the last 6 months. The prescription label was stuck on the gel’s box, so I brought that too, just in case.
Also, you can now travel with hand sanitizer without size limit, or including it in your carry-on liquids.

This is actually a suggestion for future video(s). Many of us travel through Atlanta!!! Where are the best places to eat/get coffee/waste time shopping. Where are good hide away places when stuck there for hours- access to charging, coffee, and bathrooms :) .... I know you don't spend long times in the Atlanta airport because it is home, but perhaps you could research a bit each time while waiting for your next flights. It is actually huge task considering how big the airport it, but know it would benefit so many of us who travel through Atlanta (my hint- Cat Cora's place with the chicken sandwich!).

    • @annm3968
      @annm3968 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Just went thru ATL to change planes twice. Not all places to eat are open past 5pm due to lack of staff. After 9pm only 2 places were open and the lines were crazy long. (At least between the many gates I went through).
My credit card gave me access to a lounge there which was great, but it was three train stops and two long escalators away. I then had to wait 25 minutes to get in. Good thing I had a 5 hr. layover.
They offered free food and beverages. Not a sit down meal but gumbo veggies, dip, etc. It also had nice comfy chairs.
While there the airline notified me that my flight was delayed an hour (due to bad weather). After a while I called the airlines info line, and checked their website and was given the original flight info that was no longer accurate. (Getting a human on the phone was a 40 min wait). I decided I would leave the lounge 90 minutes before the flight left to be on the safe side. At the appointed time, I checked the screen in the lounge. It showed I had 15 minutes to make it to the gate! I was 5 minutes late, but the flight was delayed again, then again. Lesson learned. Next time I will not hang out in the lounge as long, and I will not depend on the airline to inform me accurately. I will check the flight times at the gates where there are humans.
      PS
I could take a carry on for a two week trip to Europe if it wasn't for the extra meds & medical equipment I need now. Stinks getting old.
FYI: I use my old Eagle Creek cubes like the one in the video to store electronics, medicines etc. They really come in handy.

And no matter what I do, I can’t sacrifice not having my electric tooth brush, portable water pik, my brand of shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, facial wash, toner, day and night cream, moisturizer with SPF, mouthwash, etc. I have allergy and sensitive skin and I can’t use any brand provided by the ship. Even if I buy the travel size or put them in small tubes, they are still heavy and occupy space. Good thing I don’t use make-up other than lip balm and lipstick so I don’t have to bring make up and make up brushes. And I don’t bring any hair iron or curler as well.

I travel carryon only most of the time. For a week/2 week summer holiday, I carry 100ml bottles of shampoo/conditioner still, but I also have a couple of 30 ml bottles for my overnight work trips (and they last 2-3 trips). Also, if you ever get sample sachets from magazines or (even better) of your own products from the skincare counters, they are great for single use. I bring a LOT of products between hair, shower, skin and makeup - I often see these trips as my chance to relax and do a facial/hair treatment etc - but they all fit in a clear zippered pouch that fits into TSA rules. So a lot of single use pouches and very small containers of essentials. I bring my makeup brushes, powder cleanser and powder makeup (powder, blush, eyeshadow), toothbrush and toothpick/floss etc in a smaller clear zippered pouch - just in case I’m ever asked by security, everything can be seen but they do not need to be in the separately screened liquids pouch.

Most places I travel to have a corner drug store or grocery where I can get conditioner, lotion, hair gel, etc. I'll stick to packing cubes tho. Clothes in one, undies and such in the other. Just makes for a neater bag, especially since I pack personal item only. Everything's in one bag, so having it all contained and modular is easier.

In Europe, many hotels do not put anymore shampoo, conditioners & lotions in the room. They also do not give out anymore toothbrush and tooth paste. You have to go to the reception to ask for them. Since, we in Europe, likes liquid soap, many times, they are already in the shower with a dispenser attached to the wall. The same with shampoo. We are trying to save a lot these days.

I don't bring a paperback book anymore as I use my kindle. The shampoo thing is a struggle because I can use one bottle for my hair alone. It is so thick. I do like that many hotels are switching to the dispenser on the wall and that helps. If I don't bring shampoo, I just buy when I get there if they don't have the dispenser thing on the wall. I'll probably never go to carryon for my Italy/Europe vacations. I buy too much olive oil and vinegar to bring home. I do try and get as much as possible shipped home. I bought limoncello in Italy once and had a case shipped home. I usually go with an empty suitcase and return with a very heavy one home. I save room for the goodies.

in regards to the packing cubes i've found it depends on what travel i'm doing-if I'm going to one destination where i tend to unpack and stay, the cubes are great to organize me to get there. but on trips where Ive changed destinations every other day, it was too complicated to keep cubes in suitcase and have to open several different ones to get different clothing and underclothes out-preferred the rolling method where everything is visible. And would like to know tips for handling dirty clothes that build up until you have a stop long enough to do some wash-like few pair dirty shirts, panties, bra and a pair of pants. Can't put them back in cubes-yew! i have been bringing one cube to use to separate the dirties til wash.
a tip from me is to bring a small 3oz bottle of baby wash-use as body wash, shampoo if needed, and use a few drops to wash clothes with as well. enjoy your down to earth videos!

What I did when I went on my cruise was put 2 grocery bags (double bag like at the grocery store) in my cubes and used those for a "laundary" bag. Plus I would spray with my travel size febreeze and add in a dryer sheet into the bag. It helped keep the dirty and clean clothes separated, but also it reduced the odor. This was a minor/temporary hack until I could wash.

Love this video. I watch a lot of PackHacker's videos to get ideas for compact travel accessories (they specialise in backpack only travel). They got me onto the idea of Shampoo bars and I get the Lush Jason and the Organ Oil one (it's pink). Chose that one after chatting with the helpful people in the store. I use to travel with my own Shampoo and conditioner in bottles but definitely when travelling to WDW I'm just going to stick with the shampoo bar (it doubles as an air freshener for the room/bathroom) because the H20 products are pretty good.
I used to travel with my big camera but generally find I just don't use it enough to schlep it round the airport. Def couldn't travel to Disney with just a carry-on but then my journey is long-haul and I'm typically not charged a checked bag fee.
