What he did with "For Emma," the songs, texture, atmosphere is what many artists try and fail to do, it's why you try to create period. He created a feeling and a world so vivid and layered that it feels like you're entering a forbidden place, it's so familiar and yet private that it washes over you. For Emma for me is candles burning out, watery paintbrushes, half moons, rolling highway sounds...direct stillness. For Emma is an in between place, it's college and loving someone, and the pain of knowing that I can't replace the warmth of memories. It's old stereos, cigarette smoke around twilight, shadows on snowbanks, staying in bed with someone for days without missing anything. Knowing I can't hold onto anything. This world he created envelops the listener. I feel caught inside this world when I listen, this "place" he created. He captured profound emotion through sound and production and turned his inner landscape into a world. Not trying to sound grandiose here, but I feel like this is why we bother to keep listening, and will keep bothering to listen to this album as long as there are ears and music.
Bruv... Right👀I thought I was the only one.. Or like in some kind of low-key in denial kind of depression 😂🙌🏾🤷🏾♂️... This album and this song makes me feel good regardless 🙌🏾
to those of you who are curious. that thing he is touching to the string is called an ebow. (electronic bow) it causes electro-magnetic vibrations through the string. similar to the way a traditional bow causes vibrations to resonate the string
I love this song. I love this album. I LOVE THIS BAND!! After so many years I am not tired at all of listening to For Emma, Forever Ago. That's a sign you've found the perfect album. I will listen to this until I die.
its so amazing how everytime they perform their songs they make them different and everyone of them sounds perfectly amazing and i totally agree with Danger
I will forever love the break where they play almost anything. And then they go back to synch up like a great release. Such a great song and performance
The quiet ease with which Bon Iver recreate the simple beauty of their studio album makes it seem like any one could grab some friends, guitars, and a few racks of old recording gear and make a great record. If only it really were as easy as that.
@ColbyFoote so glad other people feel this way. Any time people bring up artists like Lady Gaga, and kesha, I literally say, "Oh god... don't get me started." Straight up makes me mad.
That's an Ebow. They're really cool, it uses a battery powered magnet to vibrate the string. Definitely recommend trying one out some time. They sound amazing w/ a little reverb and delay!
@Guitardene It's called ebow...really adds to this song beautifully. Apparently works by an electromagnetic circuit that senses the vibration of the string, and then creates a magnetic field that propogates the string vibration at the same frequency, producing a smooth, eerie feedback.
its called an e-bow if i am not mistaken, i was close to buying one at a time but i don't think i would have ever really had a use for it especially with the music my band played. i think it works by producing a magnetic field which causes the string to vibrate without anything touching it. they are pretty wickedly cool if used correctly in the right setting like in this perfomance
I am my mother's only one It's enough I wear my garment so it shows Now you know Only love is all maroon Gluey feathers on a flume Sky is womb and she's the moon I am my mother on the wall With us all I move in water, shore to shore Nothing's more Only love is all maroon Lapping lakes like leery loons Leaving rope burns, reddish ruse Only love is all maroon Gluey feathers on a flume Sky is womb and she's the moon
First time I listened to this and heard S. Carey’s voice but didn’t see him on drums and thought he looked really different 12 years ago 😂 then they finally show him on the vibraphone
I'd say 75% of the time I drunkenly come back home after a night out, I end up playing this on my shitty acoustic guitar and drunkenly wailing the words. The perfect way to wind down.
@youngaikidoka and when he found out he decided to still leave it out because Hiver reminded him too much of liver which is where his illness was at the time; or so I read.

This album... it doesn't matter if I'm happy or sad, For emma always fits.
Bruv... Right👀I thought I was the only one.. Or like in some kind of low-key in denial kind of depression 😂🙌🏾🤷🏾♂️...

Real

I love this song. I love this album. I LOVE THIS BAND!! After so many years I am not tired at all of listening to For Emma, Forever Ago. That's a sign you've found the perfect album. I will listen to this until I die.

i think these myspace transmissions are actually better than the album version, to be frank. stunning performance!
The quiet ease with which Bon Iver recreate the simple beauty of their studio album makes it seem like any one could grab some friends, guitars, and a few racks of old recording gear and make a great record. If only it really were as easy as that.
These guys are on another level. Great music.
the dynamics of this song is crazy! I haven't heard anything like this before!
I'm torn. I don't know which one's better, the original or this one. I fell in love with both.
ngl that brought a tear to my eyes
Wow, tasteful use of an E-Bow is something of a first for popular music! Superb.
Man, I wish I was back in 2008. Love and Lust and life.

That's an Ebow. They're really cool, it uses a battery powered magnet to vibrate the string. Definitely recommend trying one out some time. They sound amazing w/ a little reverb and delay!

It's enough
I wear my garment so it shows
Now you know
Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon
I am my mother on the wall
With us all
I move in water, shore to shore
Nothing's more
Only love is all maroon
Lapping lakes like leery loons
Leaving rope burns, reddish ruse
Only love is all maroon
Gluey feathers on a flume
Sky is womb and she's the moon
It's impossible to don't like it!
1:10 - 1:18.

@xbax23 its called an E-bow, they are pretty cool
amazing, play this song at the same time as Pink Floyd's Mother, they go so well on top of each other...

Haha, there's actually an E-bow in this song.
