What he did with "For Emma," the songs, texture, atmosphere is what many artists try and fail to do, it's why you try to create period. He created a feeling and a world so vivid and layered that it feels like you're entering a forbidden place, it's so familiar and yet private that it washes over you. For Emma for me is candles burning out, watery paintbrushes, half moons, rolling highway sounds...direct stillness. For Emma is an in between place, it's college and loving someone, and the pain of knowing that I can't replace the warmth of memories. It's old stereos, cigarette smoke around twilight, shadows on snowbanks, staying in bed with someone for days without missing anything. Knowing I can't hold onto anything. This world he created envelops the listener. I feel caught inside this world when I listen, this "place" he created. He captured profound emotion through sound and production and turned his inner landscape into a world. Not trying to sound grandiose here, but I feel like this is why we bother to keep listening, and will keep bothering to listen to this album as long as there are ears and music.
Bruv... Right👀I thought I was the only one.. Or like in some kind of low-key in denial kind of depression 😂🙌🏾🤷🏾♂️... This album and this song makes me feel good regardless 🙌🏾
to those of you who are curious. that thing he is touching to the string is called an ebow. (electronic bow) it causes electro-magnetic vibrations through the string. similar to the way a traditional bow causes vibrations to resonate the string
I love this song. I love this album. I LOVE THIS BAND!! After so many years I am not tired at all of listening to For Emma, Forever Ago. That's a sign you've found the perfect album. I will listen to this until I die.
its so amazing how everytime they perform their songs they make them different and everyone of them sounds perfectly amazing and i totally agree with Danger
I will forever love the break where they play almost anything. And then they go back to synch up like a great release. Such a great song and performance
The quiet ease with which Bon Iver recreate the simple beauty of their studio album makes it seem like any one could grab some friends, guitars, and a few racks of old recording gear and make a great record. If only it really were as easy as that.
@Guitardene It's called ebow...really adds to this song beautifully. Apparently works by an electromagnetic circuit that senses the vibration of the string, and then creates a magnetic field that propogates the string vibration at the same frequency, producing a smooth, eerie feedback.
its called an e-bow if i am not mistaken, i was close to buying one at a time but i don't think i would have ever really had a use for it especially with the music my band played. i think it works by producing a magnetic field which causes the string to vibrate without anything touching it. they are pretty wickedly cool if used correctly in the right setting like in this perfomance
That's an Ebow. They're really cool, it uses a battery powered magnet to vibrate the string. Definitely recommend trying one out some time. They sound amazing w/ a little reverb and delay!
@ColbyFoote so glad other people feel this way. Any time people bring up artists like Lady Gaga, and kesha, I literally say, "Oh god... don't get me started." Straight up makes me mad.
@youngaikidoka and when he found out he decided to still leave it out because Hiver reminded him too much of liver which is where his illness was at the time; or so I read.
First time I listened to this and heard S. Carey’s voice but didn’t see him on drums and thought he looked really different 12 years ago 😂 then they finally show him on the vibraphone
