  • The ClubSwan 36 has been eagerly awaited in the racing scene. The new one design was launched last year and due to make her big appearance on the scene in 2020 - clearly that's been put on hold for the time being. Designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian the ClubSwan 36 is a radical one design with a number of key details including a single C section daggerboard system that runs through the entire boat and a super skinny rig. Yet, as her designer explains, this is not simply another boat for the professional scene, the ClubSwan 36 is still a high performance machine, but aimed at amateur owner/drivers and their crews.

For myself not being a sailor
This is was a very intelligent and concise explanation. You didn't need to be an expert to understand it. Usually these videos are so full of jargon it's hard to follow.

How does the deflectors work? I understand by his explanation that it is meant to depower the main, however it looks like it flattens the mast, which does the opposite.

you ave to think of it like a kind of pivot point where the mast bends around

It's basically like a checkstay - the main backstay runs up through the deflector, which terminates in a fairlead, so there's always much more tension in the main backstay. The deflector is just there to support the mid-mast to prevent it from bending too much and resulting in a failure.
