  • Near the intersection of the M4 & M7 motorways known as the "Light Horse Interchange", sits the remains of Wallgrove Army Camp.
At the start of WWII the camp was established to train new enlistments to the defence force. At it's peak it housed more than 5000 troops including the Light Horse Brigade.
After the war it was used as a migrant hostel and continued to by used by the Australian Army up until the 1990.

Did they ever do munitions testing there I wonder 🤔, my parents swear up and down when they first moved out to Wetherill Park in the mid 80's, which is just a stone's throw away, that they would hear large explosions coming off from the distance in the general Prospect/Eastern Creek direction. I don't know I always thought it may have been the quarry BUT only now learning of this military base makes me wonder otherwise.

@@wouldloveapizza tbh I would like to try and access or at least find who to contact for access with the possibility of detecting in search of certain relics for local historical society… would love to get in there before more history is destroyed by commercial complex’s .

@@Matti_H_ to me these buildings are from the 60s or 70s. I'm of the understanding the land is still owened by the government. Looking at six maps most of the older sections were where wonderland was, now an industrial estate.

The site was occupied by the army until the 1990s, with a Signals unit base there.
