  • Feel like talking about Pulsed TIG welding?
And by talking I mean listening.
Whether it's with an amp controller or built-in, use it to fine-tune heat input, weld out of position, or simply as an aid to learning.
    Note well:
    1. some rambling goes on here
    2. flashing, occasionally, but not a lot
    3. I'm not a real weldor
    4. More ABOM welding @ / abom79

Here's a blast from the past: Many years ago I owned a stick welding grip meant for use with a standard 12 volt car battery. Obviously it had no control over current output other than the voltage drop as you used it more. But to help in maintaining a near constant (pulsed) arc, it had a tiny solenoid in the head that would pull the welding rod back a fraction of an inch every time an arc was struck, and then let it go forwards again when the arc was lost. On car body panels it was surprisingly effective - as long as you kept the battery voltage constant. I wish I knew what happened to it even though I now own stick, mig, tig, oxy/ace and propane welding equipment. (What can I say? I'm a tool hoarder!)

i used to run pulse with a shallow angle of attack combined with laywire on thin wall stainless pipe, It gets me full penetration without undercutting the material or getting a concave weld bead and minimal overheating. my settings and a full purge usually gives me a full penetration weld that is close to flat on the inside of the pipe. for 2.0mm wall stainless: 1.0 or 1.6mm filler, 50-65 amps, 25-40% ontime with 2-3 pulses per second, shallow angle of attack to your weld puddle gets a bit of an teardrop shape. fine tune settings for your machine and your weld speed.

I have been meaning to comment that these new arc shot intros remind me of weldingtipsandtricks, not sure if it is intentional.
As always, thank you for the videos. Besides the entertainment from your personality and the way you show things up, you take things more in deep than most people do and for some of us with lot of questions, this is what we were looking for in one video.

And here I thought pulsed tig was just pulling out the socket and then plugging it back in 30times a minute.

Tig welding was developed during the later stages of WWII when they started making aircraft out of aluminium. It was quickly realised that pulsing the arc with a high frequency current made it easier to break through the aluminium oxide which needs considerably higher temperature to break down than what is required to actually melt the aluminium.

On this side of the pond, airframes were made of aluminum. (The material properties are nearly identical, so all the maths are the same.) ;-)

@@wlan246 are the old aluminium / aluminum debate... There's a topic you haven't covered this old Tony

I'd love to see a TIG welder that uses an old school music synthesizer as the control board, with a circuit that amplifies the signal.
You select a waveform, turn some knobs to modulate the waveform a bit, then hit a key to select frequency. A volume slider determines amperage. Then add in extra effect modules for stuff like pulse welding :)
