Making a Skeletonized Hammer - COPPER or BRASS hammer? HAMMER TIME!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 พ.ย. 2024
- I wanted to create a unique machinists hammer with removable soft blow faces. I designed the hammer handle with a skeletonized look. I cast the body of the hammer out of A365 aluminum and the faces are copper and brass. This was a fun project that I hope you all enjoy watching!

I really liked the idea of this hammer having the head screwed on. In theory you can create other heads for this hammer and change them as needed. It can transform into a rubber-headed hammer (used in woodworking), tipped steel head, or even a small ax or wheel wrench.
exactly
Hammers like this one have been being made both mass produced and custom made for a long time. You are right, you change the heads out for whatever you need. Most commonly brass and Delrin or PLA heads are used on them.
I used to have hammers like that there great, but this one is way better and prettier.
@@darrellbeets7758 And WAY! OVERPRICED !! TOO !!
@@davidwillard7334 huh? Were are u talking about lol?
I've made essentially exactly this before, just less cool looking and the one warning I have for this kind of thing is that even though the screw-on faces are soft, with enough use they will completely deform the actual hammer head.
This was bad enough on mine that the whole thing had to be scrapped so for v2 I put a thin (2mm ish) replaceable plastic washer behind each head to soak up the impacts and it seems to work well.
DEFORMITY ! IS ! SOMETHING! YOU !! HAVE ! TO ! LIVE !! WITH !!
@@davidwillard7334 yes, but good design limits it to the parts that are designed to deform.
@@JedLath292 thus be smart with how ya make ya own tools :P a smith is only as good as his worst tools in the long run.
I was going to suggest exactly the same thing, a plastic or rubber gasket between the "heads" and "body" of the hammer will greatly improve durability over long term use.

Looks great! Just make sure it never gets wet. Aluminium and copper in contact have a high electrochemical potential.
I didn't know that.
Cool
Or just add antiseize or some high quality grease. Not perfect but it might help
I just learnrd about this phenomenon that the more precious metal erodes the lesser one
@@bigpat_4295 there can be only one
Only if it remains wet. Once the electrolyte dries up the electrolysis stops. Also plain water is not likely to be much of a problem as it has a low S/m.

Make sure to anti seize the brass side or it will never come off, it and aluminum have a high galvanic potential. Beautiful project, really liking the chanel so far
That's great advice!
Copper and aluminimum can also have a galvanic potential too, we run into this a lot in watercooling too, lots of cheap parts are aluminimum so you can only use them with alu blocks and rads etc
For me this is one of the cleanest and most professional objects you've done to date. Nice project.
That hammer turned out beautiful. I noticed some techniques with packing sand that I hadn't seen anyone else use since I was in metal shop. Made things turn out so much better for you. Can't wait to see what you come up with next. Really brilliant work! 👍👍👍

That a _lot_ of begatting.
Great project! You always make it look so easy.
@make build modify will you ever make Vids again?
@@zohranbloedjes9770 yes. I'm currently building homes and doing residential construction full-time. Not much time for shooting and editing videos.
My plans are to create more as soon as possible.
Very beautiful build. It's so satisfying seeing people take the time to perfect the small details. So many channels cast, quickly sand it, and call it done to pump out a video. It's refreshing to see someone take their time.
As a metalwork teacher in high school in Australia Sydney for 25 years let me congratulate you on your presentation I used to have students melt aluminium and cast parts of a steam tractor at Sefton High School what you showed was very comprehensive and a joy to watch thank you getting the 115 anymore
I remember decades ago, about 5, in metal shop in high school.
We did sand casting, sheet metal work and machine work on a lathe.
I made a small 2 faced hammer out of steel, brass and aluminum.
The head was about 1/2" diameter, was 2/3 steel & 1/3 brass. The handle was aluminum about 1/2" in diameter tapered to 1/4" tapped to fit into the head.
Love the quality of your projects. Really inspiring for my own casting projects when I make it that far. Just melting metal at the moment.
I love your aluminum castings the best, because of the lower temperature, you can actually see the pouring cleanly instead of the white hot glow of other metals.
That is some wheelie cool wheelium.
Beautiful work - as always. I love the melding of new technology via the digital renderings and 3D printing with the ancient art of sand casting. Your machines and machine work have added a new dimension that takes your videos to another level. And when I watch them, ten minutes seems oddly short because I look forward to every moment. Keep up the good work!
That's a very functional and aesthetically pleasing tool.
Metal handle on a hammer? How's that wrist feeling after working with it for a few hours?
That's a nice hammer. Darn it, now I may have to make one for myself! ;-) You might consider making one side out of lead. Being so soft, it acts almost like a dead blow hammer when setting things in the mill vise or lathe. Nice work.
A verified comment that didn’t blow up? I must be dreaming
I can see you're only getting better and better with your mold making and casting skills
It’s too nice to use, a real piece of art .
Subscribed after 10 seconds
Easily the best hammer of any type Ive seen made on TH-cam. 10/10 on every step of the process.
If you don't plan on getting a bigger lathe, get a used (second hand) cast iron surface plate that can accommodate the lathe's feet. A lot of the issues small lathes have stem from vibration management.
Could you also mount the feet on some dense rubber that would dampen vibes, and then mount the rubber to something solid e.g. concrete floor?
@@RC-fp1tl not sure, but I don’t think so. You want it to be as massive and solid as possible... so no rubber
A rubber buffer layer in between alluminium handle and both the hammer heads would help the handle deform less and changing the heads easier.
Beautiful work. You’re an artist and a heck of a good craftsman.
This turned out beautifully. Love the shiny hammer heads and how they fit perfectly snuck onto the handle
the way those heads fit on the hammer was *chefs kiss*
I love your videos. They're so relaxing and satisfying to watch!
Really like the build felt like watching a clickspring video.
Thank you very much!
Your so patient, it’s world class.
Looks really nice I'd recommend adding a small slit from the threads to the side not a something deep just a tiny 20tho deep slit to release an air trap in 2-5 years when you swap the ends out otherwise in a few years once oil and grime builds up it will trap a vacuum and feel like it was epoxy together.
Another option is coat the flats in blue loctie this will seal out dirt and make it even more solid when you want to swap the end just heat it up to around 350deg for a min or two and it will spin right off
Fantastic hammer. Having interchangeable heads is a game changer for longevity and not breaking things
I did similar in trade school.. using set screws instead of make threads on the brass will help a lot long term, even if the heads need to be a bit thicker.
Big slegdehammer then smaller more refined hammer, perfect set up for a series of you casting and then machining more of your own tools.
Fantastic project! I wish I had the equipment and 3D programming knowledge you have. Clearly a labor of love. Look forward to your future project.
Really nicely done. Super clean casting on the handle and beautiful finish on the heads. Thanks for sharing!
To be new at machining, you sure did an extremely excellent job!
Honestly, so cool the stuff you make. You should try making one of the detachable heads of the hammer out of non-metal. Just to see what happens.
Not an absurd idea at all. We have some hammers in our shop with a soft acrylic head for detailing work.
It would work perfectly fine so long as the threads were solid.
Ohh, those wheelium muffins at 4:02, can’t wait for them to finish baking.
love the way this turned out!
That is Beautiful, you are an artist of engineering.
It's absolutely gorgeous
Excellent no amazing work. You're a true craftsman.
That was absolutely amazing to watch.
Nicely done.
That's pretty badass. Artistic, but very utilitarian too.
That is a thing of beauty. Loved watching you make it.
This is art. Thank you for sharing.
I'd buy that in a heartbeat! It looks so cool!
Great design. Looks awesome.
Very nice looking hammie. Got a few machinist friends that would be jealous. Love watching sand casting in action.
Amazing work. Thanks for making.
Nice work, hammer with multiple faces are nice to have around.
You have a lot of nice equipment and that helps you to produce these items. It is very nice. I have a band saw but no lathe yet. I hope to make mini versions of these items for my diorama sets.
This came out fantastic! Love the design of the skeleton handle, very clean looking
"I like to call this wheelium". is the funniest thing I've heard all day. so now I'm wondering if I've had a boring day or my Humour has died.
That is very clean. I like it.
Stunning build!!! Your videos get better and better. Thanks for sharing your journey with us! Cheers!!
You may be new to machining but you did a fantastic job on that hammer. It must feel so good looking at something like that and know that it came from an idea in your head and it just came to life. Awesome job!
That sir is a work of art.
Great job, and very beautiful design. Like!
ABSOLUTELY A MASTERPIECE !
BEAUTIFULLY DONE !!!! 🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
BRAVO BROTHER !🇺🇸🎯😎🎯🎯👊👊😎💫
I would totally buy this!!!
The hammer looks great! I can't imagine that it has much weight behind it. More of a precision light-duty type of tool than a nail driver, but I can bet it would be great for a jewelry maker or someone who builds models.
It was never intended to drive nails LOL!
Brass and copper hammers are used for working with metal, for doing things like seating a work piece in the video of a milling machine, or assembling a tool or machine, striking punches or stamps. Neither the copper nor the brass will mar steel.
Really liked ur planning with this project as to how ur gonna clamp it while machining, came out great 👍🏻
That thing is gorgeous.
Awesome video! It’s really cool seeing you get more into machining while still using the furnace and bringing them both together in the same project
I love the concept, and the execution.
Perfect hammer for rebuilding gear boxes!
That is a very beautiful hammer that looks functional.
I've liked all of your projects. This however is definitely my fave. (Yes, I'm a tool geek) It's gorgeous and practical, which is a great combo. Keep up the good work.
Really cool idea! There are two issues I see. First, no way to lock the threads. If they start to come loose, continuing to use the hammer would cause damage to the threads.
Second (electrical background here), the dissimilar metals against each other will cause corrosion over time. I recommend wiping down the surfaces with de-ox before screwing them on.
Beautiful piece
Oh man, that is so cool! And it came out so clean!
Hola.. que tipo de torno es el que usas.. podrías pasar la descripción? Muy buen video
is the aluminum casting something you would be willing to make for other people?
Love the skeleton design on the handle
Awesome. And double awesome for casting the bits. great work man.
that project was absolutely awesome
Beautiful work.
Very original concept!
I love this project. Well done. A really beautiful tool.
Cool vid... not only was the end product lovely but the sequence at 3:52 where the aluminium came up through the risers(?), formed a matte oxide layer(?) and then started to pulse up and down slightly was mesmerising, thankyou.
New here, but your attention to detail and concise voice-over is very nice
Awesome mallet! Great build.
Nicely done. The video reminds me of Clickspring , with the music and general editing and voiceover, that's definitely a compliment.
Woo! Thats a super cool project. Great stuff!
Love your work. Do you clean out your crucible between different metals, if so, how?
I love it!
A while back I found a discarded sledge hammer head (I'm guessing it's two kilos) with no handle. I decided to make a handle out of some metal drawer runners put back to back to form a skeleton handle. I wrapped some PET ribbon around the bottom and it turned out better than I had imagined. Still, there is nothing like casting something yourself. Great job!
Amazing result brother, you have such a fineness with your work its fantastic to watch. Hope you have a great weekend ✌️
You nailed it! 👍👍👍👍👍
Nice job just one word of caution using a tin coated tap on Aluminum is not advisable they have some aluminum base in coating that makes it a similar material to the aluminum you are taping that can induce galling. A bright finish tap is a better recommendation.
Really nice hammer build. Thanks for sharing.
Weekend Stuff
Beautifully done. A pleasure to watch & learn.
good looking hammer.. would like to hear about how it works when put to use.. does it vibrate or jar your bones?
Fun to see the new tools getting put to good use :]
Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!
looks very cool, is there any benefit on having different materials on each side?
Excellent workmanship! truly a useful work of art!
All that work and you end up with a piece of art instead of a tool. If I had that hammer I'd never hit anything with it. Good job man.
That turned out great. Would love to have something like that in my shop.
