Parity isn't the issue, the modern NBA just sucks. No defense, non-competitive, players don't care about the fans, players are crybabies, NBA lacks soul, three point spam, leftist politics injected into the game. People like to see dunks and threes, that doesn't mean people want to see EASY + wide open dunks and threes. Creating more parity is about the only good thing the NBA is doing right now, because 2017 and 2018 were wasted years in the NBA thanks to KD taking the chump route
True the explosion of sports betting online has caused people to ironically tap out. If you were a fan and had huge losses, you might never watch again.
People don't want parity of champions, people want parity of the chase. It's like in professional wrestling, a great heel drives interest even though everyone "hates" the heel. The chase is the thrill and the championship is the apex. A dynasty with multiple challengers falling and then some new team takes them down a few years down the line is good for national interest.
The Isiah Hartenstein comparison is a little inaccurate. The Knicks could've kept all three of the players you listed. They couldn't keep Hartenstein because of Early Bird Rights or something to that effect that limited them on their offer to 4 years $72m regardless of what other teams offered.
Speaking for myself, having Cavs-Warriors for 4 straight years in the Finals was something I referred to as "the dark times". Not much better was 1980-1998 where if you didn't play for the Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Rockets, Bulls, or 76ers (once), you just didn't get a ring. I'm not a fan of dynasties, and I'm not a fan of big market teams like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, etc. getting no-cap spending to accompany their already built-in advantage of being cities rich players want to be. Whether that's the case or not, however, I do like teams to be rewarded for developing their core outside of big-ticket free agents and especially getting to keep guys they drafted or acquired before they became superstars. I'm kind of torn. I don't really want to see Klay Thompson playing for anyone other than the Warriors, but I don't really want to see the Warriors in the Finals again anytime in the near future.
Gahlee whilikers the ESPN guys will have to go to okc and Orlando to cover the finals they don’t have as good as San Francisco, New York, or LA. That’s so unfair!
Now, demanding a trade with a lengthy and expensive contract won't happen. Teams will be unable or unwilling to take on the salary. Good for franchises. Bad for chemistry. What else can be done to stop blind spending for rings? Lmk
Yea right lol you really think they'd prevent Lakers from getting another star? Don't be surprised if they somehow manage to miraculously get Grant or Levine or Derozan or a team surprisingly waives a very good player and he ends up on Lakers.
@@robglobal1 ah yes of course the "lakers clause" in the cba right that every team except the lakers is subject to the second apron. lol stop being ridiculous how do the lakers live this rent free in your head
The issue with the league is the injuries. Just look at the Eastern Conference Playoffs this year. I don't know what can be done, but it does seem odd that so many players are getting injured and stars no less! I've been watching hoops since 1991 and the amount of injuries these days is off the charts.
You’re off base with Hartenstein bro. It wasn’t that they couldn’t pay him, they offered the max they could pay him. But OKC could offer way more over less years.
I can assure you that the NBA does not want their golden children, the Lakers and the Warriors, to lose. It's literally all they ever talk about on ESPN.
You confusing warriors with the Celtics Gsw lost in the play in 2021 missing 5 players including Klay vs Lakers by 3 nobody gave them any excuses like LeBron and KD would of got they just say they lost no mention of injuries same in 2016 it's literally two ppl that say anything good about Gsw in the media and that's tim legler and Stephen A
You are right about the Lakers. But dead wrong about the Warriors. There is only a couple ways the NBA can control games. Either suspend players extensively, fines, and the most obvious is bias from referees during games… so go have a look at the FTA per game over opponents FTA per game. Who has the biggest advantage in the league? Lakers. But guess who’s at the very bottom? Warriors The thing is, the Warriors currently have the largest fan base of all the teams. As they should. The ratings graph from this video proves this. This IS the reason why the ratings are 💩. The largest fan base can clearly see the bias and unfair officiating night after night. So they dont watch.
Bro Reed Sheppard was not drafted first 😂 he went 3rd to the Rockets. And why everyone keep saying first white American, so y'all just forgot about Chet 😂 and he was drafted higher than Reed 😭
I partially agree, though the main problem is that there are no good rivalries in the NBA and there are too many entitled divas. On top of that, the parade of flopping, traveling, free throws, and poor defensive effort makes for a boring product.
I think the ratings dropping has a lot to do with being able to watch on streaming and social media.. I can’t remember the last time I’ve really watched tv like that
You can't really judge the popularity of parity by the 1970's. The finals were still tape-delayed, back then. And in terms of raw numbers, the NBA was nowhere near as popular. Ratings are merely a percentage of the tv audience -- not the actual audience. And there were only a few channels in the 1970's. So, with so few options, the percentage of viewers for 70's ball was going to be higher than it should have been -- even though they were tape-delayed games -- and even though the sport wasn't that popular. The moment that elevated basketball was actually the 1979 NCAA championship between Larry and Magic. So, again, those 70's numbers are inflated due to restrictions on choice of programs to watch. The 80's had more channels available - especially by the end of the decade - but even if you go into the 1990's, only 60% of Americans had cable tv. And there was no internet viewing options -- nor was satellite big yet. So, options were still restricted for many people. And in the 80's basketball felt like the new sport. Oh sure, it had been around forever, but it really only gained true national interest at that time. With limited channels for at least half of Americans, it's still not fair to compare ratings-wise. But what about the 1990's? Michael Jordan was in seven commercials at the same time. Seven. Nike, Wheaties, McDonald's Rayovac (though he may have switched to Energizer), Gatorade, and Ballpark franks. The 1990's was the peak of commercials being a part of pop-culture. The 1990's was also the peak of sports viewrship. ESPN was big, and that fact made even non-ESPN sports programs better. Therefore, athletes were infinitely marketable, and Jordan was the most marketable out of all of them. Furthermore, everyone watched tv, and in spite of new channels, people still felt culturally obligated to watch certain main events that everyone else was watching. In addition, Michael is still considered to be the GOAT by most people. The confluence of marketing, sports interest, unified viewrship, and basketball talent will probably never happen again. So, there is no snese in comparing percentage of tv viewers from then until now. The NBA will likely never get back to that. It's not a valuable metric to measure how well the NBA is doing. ---------------------- What's more relevant is the recent drop-off, and I really don't think that parity is the issue. The NBA struggled with viewership during the regular season so badly this year, that they literally changed the rules of the game. Seriously. They made refs call the game totally different after the All-Star break. They stopped calling fouls so strictly. It altered NBA offense and defense. It took a while to get to the point where the NBA had to change things -- and the previously bad rules is partly what lead to the decline in ratings. It will also take a while for the rule changes to draw people back. In the meantime, the NBA hasn't tried the parity thing since the 70's (which we can't reasonably compare to now for all the reasons mentioned earlier). And initially, when you try something new, there can be a hit. A drop-off. So, if you are right about parity hurting the NBA, it could be a temporary thing. And it also might take a while to draw in the people who never tuned into the NBA *because* of the dynasties. There are people like that. Once those anti-dynasty people realize that those days are over, then we could see some uptick. But it will take a bit! You neeed to also remember that if people loved the dynasties of the past, it was because players didn't collude to form them... -------------------------- Also, the NBA likely lost viewership due to Black Lives Matter. In order to stay perfectly neutral here, I'll just say this: To people on the left, Black Lives Matter was about justice, reform, civil rights, and many other wonderful things. To people on the right, Black Lives Matter was a cover for a socialistic agenda that sought to re-define capitalism and other American institutions in a negative way. Regardless of who is right, conservatives watch more sports than liberals. Regardless of who is right, black athletes in the NBA were more outspoken in favor of BLM than athletes in any other sport. Regardless of who is right, these things would lead to the NBA losing viewrship from conservatives... who watch more sports than liberals. Therefore, the NBA took a huge hit from America's #1 sports-watching audience. Yikes. ---------------------------- So, there are a lot of issues besides parity. I think the NBA is legit to try something to get itself out of its funk.
I wonder if this will have long-term effects on salaries. Could we possibly see a day when players take significantly less money to buddy up and build a power team?
The problem with owners not wanting to pay luxury tax is that they seem to be buying franchises at 200-400 million and the selling them for 2.4 billion dollars. And you don't want to spend 30M more per year to make your product better? No logic here.
As soon as I saw that, I was like: “The comments are going to be filled with people complaining that Better Help sponsored this video.” I hear it’s hard to cancel, correct me if I’m wrong??
People dont need dynasty to be interesting abt basketball. There is other reasons why people dont watch nba anymore that much. Main reasons are no defence allowed and refs call games very weird way. And tanking ofc, losing should never rewarded in any sport. They call that strategy, i call it stupid. I say how it is, game is rigged by corrupted refs and Adam Silver. Todays world everyone get all information, league can not limit what information is out there. Everything is revealed. We all can see how Lakers get million more freethrows than anyone else. Nobody want watch game what is rigged and there is no real competition and refs find foul in every possession in other end but not other. Even if refs sometimes call game fair, those touching fouls are so annoying. Everyone hate how nba refs call the games. Then there are these insufferable players like crybaby LeBalco. I dont want watch him, hear anything abt him or see him as face of the league. And yet, nba media always talk abt him. Only him, even when there is no reason to do so. Nba is unfixable because Silver destroyed nba and he will be comissioner god know how long, even day more is too much.
Man if this guy was in the sales department or selling some real estate or insurance, I'd be fleeced every damn time and buy whatever he's selling with how convincing he talks.
He keeps stating that the Mavericks are second apron, but they aren't. Spotrac has trouble updating this time of year. Once the website updates, they will be $2.5-4.5M below the first apron with one (possibly two if they waive Lawson) roster spots to fill. The current total on the Mavericks page is still including the salary with Josh Green even though he was removed from the roster higher on the page.,
NBA is ruined. The finals were so much better and hyped when we got to see our favourite stars. Best teams attract fans. When u always seek to destroy them and force a rebuild fans go.
The NBA focuses too much on winning teams. There are perpetually abysmal teams that hurt the brand just as much, like the Wizards. If you know your team is going to be awful, why bother watching? The lottery doesnt help these teams. If the picks turn out to be great players, they end up leaving, as they dont want to be a on a terrible team.
Would if it just ends up like 2k where you’ll see someone like Buddy Hield in his prime in the free agency because he’s worth 20 mil but no one will pay him that.
You are so right about dynasties. Dynasties = name recognition for casual fans - those who will only watch occasionally - and often only when someone they have heard of is playing.
He said he was the first AMERICAN WHITE GUY .... meaning the first American players taken are normally African-Americans ... AKA American black players ... in what was it? 48 years or something? You had Bogut as the #1 pick but he was Australian.... Also, Bargnani was a #1 pick but he was Italian. I don't normally think about it in those terms so it was kind of an odd comment. Bill Walton was the #1 pick in 1974 ... a HOF player .... Won 2 Titles despite injuries marring his career. Kent Benson in 1977 .... I had to look it up. Benson wasn't very good.
As we can see the drop of views after Cavs and Warriors rivalry, new champs every season is not profitable enough. Most basketball fans are casuals who wanna watch well-known teams and players. But for true basketball fans it's good to see new guys shining and winning
The Supermax era is stupid, detrimental and a big mistake.. .. and the Supermax era should end. It only created a lot of problems: • ridiculous player empowerment,.. resulting in even more ridiculous trade demands • supermax bankrupts teams for nothing, eventually losing depth • does not reward organic development (teams getting good by rookie draft) • but rewards players that will flunk afterwards, players have no incentive in getting better (Ben Simmons, Wiggins, Poole..) • etc etc Then, all these supermax problems are happening alongside • ridiculous load management • ridiculous referee controversies
I would add one thing. A player drafted by the team only has 50% of his contract go toward the luxury tax. Keeps salary cap in place, penalties for free agent only teams, but incentives to draft, develop, and keep players.
Man I'm glad we have ad blockers and time stamps for youtube, imagine sitting through multiple ads from youtube then ads in the video, intros and exits for a 9 minute video. Shit would be worthless
I understand the NBA doesn't make a penny off pirated streams of games, but if they moved to count viewers via the pirate feeds instead of aggressively shut them down, I guarantee they'd see a big boost in viewership of all NBA games, pre-season, summer league, regular season and of course playoffs. The amount of people I know and heard using pirate streaming sites this year was a record for sure, especially for the finals. In fact, I'd argue that is where most of their viewership is going and has gone to - pirated feeds instead of paying money to watch. And when it aligns with people getting sick and tired of dynasties and the same damn superstars and teams getting all the attention and talk, it lowers people's willingness to pay for the lower quality product.
nba is shooting themselves in the foot. if the big market teams struggle, their viewership will go down. once curry and lebron retire, they will lose a lot of fans and they are only speeding up the process
Yep star players are rarely getting traded in the New CBA they are most likely sticking with the team that drafted them for at least 10 years or more. Like in the 90s and 2000s.
You like how nobody likes his ads but he doesn’t change them? Not even saying he should stop accepting ads, but at least do like a manscaped ad or like a ticket app ad. Something that isn’t a fuckin scam
Dynasties could happen with smart signings. 1 supermax franchise player, 1 max player, the rest. Also you need players that are willing to sacrifice their salary, high-risk players, unwanted guys, veterans, etc. And good experienced rookies (not one-and-dones).
I feel a big reason why the ratings are dropping that was completely untouched in this video is the rise of streaming and pirating. I’d be surprised if even 60% of fans paid to watch rather than just using the internet. The NBA needs a way to deliver their product in a competitive enough price range that people will be willing to pay for it
I dont even need to see the video. People have been wishing on the Warriors downfall for a long time. Sad part is the casuals think its a chuck 3 and clock out type of team. There's so much more going on. Curry has proven so much more than what was asked of him. His offense is unlike anything we have ever seen. Dray is a donkey dumbfuck but his iq and defense, coupled with his ability to be a swiss army knife is amazing. The warriors have played some of the best systematic, fundamental, beautiful basketball I have ever seen. Go watch 2022 playoffs if you disagree. Curry is a 1 of a kind, he is in the convo with the greats, by virtue of being unique, holding records that people cant even scratch, and rewriting how you play basketball. Also, fun fact, that record setting season where wars got 73 wins, Dray got the most minutes and games started. We can hold him accountable for his on court antics, but at least he keeps it on the court, we act like we know but we don't. He has an amazing relationship with the majority of players he has played against. I hated on this team for a long time. I was from the bay and I honestly wished on their downfall. I didn't realize I was witnessing a revolution. I started really trying to understand basketball and when I did that I appreciated Lebron, the Warriors, and KD so much more. I think as couch sitters we get way too comfortable judging stars when in reality they are just like us, and they are putting in work that few of us even understand. It's crazy to think as a fan you hold it against a nba player to average 31 ppg 50-40-90 in the greatest stage in nba history and hate on them. KD deserves some flowers. I dont give a fuck if he joined a 73 wins team. They drafted their star players. What team did that? Who has pulled those stats in a finals series? KD is a monster, we should show him some love, and Steph's gravity is at an all time record when it comes to basketball. Stop hating on Lebron Steph and KD. Those guys are monsters, mentality wise, talent wise, and personality wise. None of ya'll could handle the scrutiny of a million people juding your every move.

That’s not even why the Knicks couldn’t keep Hartenstein. They could keep him because of Early Bird rights
The biggest issue with all major sports is rigging/fixing/manipulation. With legal gambling, it becomes even more apparent
Viewerships tanked though. Are you sure about that?
The Isiah Hartenstein comparison is a little inaccurate. The Knicks could've kept all three of the players you listed. They couldn't keep Hartenstein because of Early Bird Rights or something to that effect that limited them on their offer to 4 years $72m regardless of what other teams offered.
Knicks couldn’t sign iHart because the early but rights limited the max amount they could offer him

Hartenstein had nothing to do with payroll! He had early bird rights and the Knicks could only offer him so much.
Bulls weren't a dynasty they just had Jordan and Pistons won by physically beating the crap out of players wich was not real basketball.
The ironic thing is, their roster is already looking a bit more substantial than last year. I think people will be surprised.
oh please. it's a lateral move.

For the Knicks, it wasn’t the CBA per se, they didn’t have the bird right to Hartenstein so they couldn’t pay more than the asking price.

Warriors
The thing is, the Warriors currently have the largest fan base of all the teams.
And why everyone keep saying first white American, so y'all just forgot about Chet 😂 and he was drafted higher than Reed 😭
exactly! i was so confused!
I can’t remember the last time I’ve really watched tv like that
You are my favorite sports TH-camr. This is such a good breakdown
NBA: You can't make super teams anymore.
Boston: Hold my 🍻
For tv ratings I just wonder how many ppl are watching the Finals with one tv??
Ratings falling down is mainly about variety of entertainment venues like video games, watching podcast, netflix.
----------------------
What's more relevant is the recent drop-off, and I really don't think that parity is the issue.
--------------------------
Also, the NBA likely lost viewership due to Black Lives Matter.
Yikes.
----------------------------
So, there are a lot of issues besides parity. I think the NBA is legit to try something to get itself out of its funk.
Why is there a big push for therapist? Lol, i guess market dried up and now they using ads?

I wonder if this will have long-term effects on salaries. Could we possibly see a day when players take significantly less money to buddy up and build a power team?

As a viewer of the nba, it's tough to stay attached to a team when they change nearly every player you know and love every year
Dallas had 12.9 million to spend on a mid level exception, which they used for Naji Marshall. Teams above the second apron can't use a MLE
He keeps stating that the Mavericks are second apron, but they aren't. Spotrac has trouble updating this time of year. Once the website updates, they will be $2.5-4.5M below the first apron with one (possibly two if they waive Lawson) roster spots to fill. The current total on the Mavericks page is still including the salary with Josh Green even though he was removed from the roster higher on the page.,
Actually, they updated it today. Spotrac shows the Mavericks as a 1st apron team right now.
I think the only way to combat this and to make super teams again is if players collude to take drastic pay cuts to team up

Imo, there are less views now because people are cutting cable. "Illegal" streaming is getting really good too

You had Bogut as the #1 pick but he was Australian.... Also, Bargnani was a #1 pick but he was Italian. I don't normally think about it in those terms so it was kind of an odd comment. Too bad viewership and ratings tanked.
The Supermax era is stupid, detrimental and a big mistake..
.. and the Supermax era should end.
It only created a lot of problems:
• ridiculous player empowerment,.. resulting in even more ridiculous trade demands
• supermax bankrupts teams for nothing, eventually losing depth
• does not reward organic development (teams getting good by rookie draft)
• but rewards players that will flunk afterwards, players have no incentive in getting better (Ben Simmons, Wiggins, Poole..)
• etc etc
Then, all these supermax problems are happening alongside
• ridiculous load management
• ridiculous referee controversies
Actually a very informative video for me. I've been very confused about what's been going on with the new rules.
I skip through the ads all the time it’s really annoying
NIKE doesnt want Curry to win 😢
We dont want teams chucking 3 pointers endlessly
I would add one thing. A player drafted by the team only has 50% of his contract go toward the luxury tax. Keeps salary cap in place, penalties for free agent only teams, but incentives to draft, develop, and keep players.
The passion shines through in every video. It's truly inspiring.
I'm not sure dude, but would it hurt to be more holistic in your reason? Parity may hurt ratings... but maybe illegal streaming deserves a shout out
Great content as usual!
Loosen up the jacket, will ya? it's summer!
nba is shooting themselves in the foot. if the big market teams struggle, their viewership will go down. once curry and lebron retire, they will lose a lot of fans and they are only speeding up the process
Meanwhile they keep giving out max contracts.
I don’t think its anti-super teams, just anti “I want off this team with 3-4 yrs left in a contract.”
Gonna make it harder to demand a trade while on a lengthy, expensive contract. Teams won't be able or willing to take on the salary.
Yep star players are rarely getting traded in the New CBA they are most likely sticking with the team that drafted them for at least 10 years or more. Like in the 90s and 2000s.

Dynasties could happen with smart signings. 1 supermax franchise player, 1 max player, the rest. Also you need players that are willing to sacrifice their salary, high-risk players, unwanted guys, veterans, etc. And good experienced rookies (not one-and-dones).
Greatest video! Thanks!
These dudes owned the league up till recently. Throw them some flowers and stop being haters, NBA fans foster a hateful ass culture. Show some fuckin love.
