It my Daly driver please help thank you and have a blessed day or night
I appreciate the tool requirement up front. The tight description and lack of tangents that keep viewers on track make this an excellent video for newbies and brush-up vets alike. Kudos.
+edpdx Thanks for the feedback!
always "wipe down the bottom of your rear end really well" 7:33
Looks good!
I rarely pull the driveshaft from the trans. I just move it to the side and bungee or zip tie it to the leaf spring frame etc. I also wrap the universal with two turns of electrical tape to keep the caps from falling off.
Good tip - sounds like a job for my multipurpose wire coat hanger tool.
I order from your site just because you put these awesome how to videos on here. Very very helpful and I appreciate how easy you make it to understand the procedure.
Thanks for checking us out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Thanks for the video! $10 in parts and about 40 minutes to replace the seal on my 90 Suburban. The shop wanted $150. I didn't pull the shaft out. I just tied it up out of the way. Also used a bit paint to mark the pinion instead of scoring with a chisel. Good stuff. Thanks!
thank you Mike Green you help more people than you could ever imagine

I just made my first order and got some tech advise a well. Thank you so much for making and posting your tech videos. They are very helpful and give me the confidence to fix something that I never have fixed before.
I know this is a old video, but there seemed to be a lot of questions regarding why he marked the nut, so incase someone stumbles upon this. When the pinion and ring gear are assembled, there is a crush washer inside of the differential the sits between the back if the pinion(that you cant see) and the bearing. This washer is crushed during assembly to a very specific tolerance, and that sets the lash between the two gears. If you were to just crank the nut down on the yoke, it will crush that washer further pulling the gear lash out of spec. This is the best way for a do it yourselfer to get it back close to what it was.
Pinion depth is established with the pinion shims all the crush sleeve does is set the bearing preload.
@@jamesfarmer2748 exactly!
@steevo630 After tightening the bolt down with a gun, we do use a torque wrench to make sure it's within specs. Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on TH-cam. Have a great day!
iA auto is lucky to have you . Man you are one of the best
Pretty good instructional video. The work doesn't seem hard at all, as long as you have access to a lift.
Glad you found the video to! Bad pinion seal usually only causes a leak no noise.
I love all these videos! ANOTHER GREAT ONE!
Thanks for the trouble! It's a service to those trying to learn.
Much appreciated.
Your videos have always been so helpful over the years, thank you for all your work and dedication.
@dkhill27 If you have a service or a Chiltons manual it should show you install everything back together to it's proper specs. The way that we show in the video is the easier way to do it, however one of the repair manuals should have an illistration for you as to how it all fits together, and proper torque specs. Hope this helps you out.
Made many successful repairs myself thanks to this channel! Thank you for sharing 😎👍
If you, or any viewers were wondering I fixed my problem with the proper seal, i did exactly as you showed in the video except i tied the drive shaft up with some speaker wire. the chatter which I was experiencing was the pinion nut being loose in the rear end, i tightened it as hard as I could with my own two hands and put some locltite on it. shouldn't be coming off anytime soon the noise was eliminated and no more leak!
Very good and informative video. I am going to do this soon on my Ranger. The seal has started to leak a bit. It seems to be a fairly easy job.
@jahanzebakhter1 The mark is so you can tighten the bolt back up exactly as you took it apart. This insures that you keep the proper pressure on the bearings and the proper clearances between the gears. If you do not do it this way you could wear out your differential prematurely. An alternative would be to use plasti-gauge and re align the entire assembly.
Sweet video. Thanks very helpful
Wow I was just watching this video yesterday and today I went out to do some exhaust work on my 88 GMC Jimmy and noticed that very seal was leaking! At least I know the correct way to fix it now!
Thanks for posting, this did help me out...
Thank you very helpful.
Thank you sir, very nice video. BIG HELPED
The video helped out a lot, thank's
Great video even though I don't have any need to do this. I think I've got bad rear bearings, but thought I'd watch this while searching.
GREAT VIDEO - THANKS!! Never changed one of these seals (50 years working on cars).. now know the nut needs to be in same position. Done many rear transmission seals, which I'll do when I have the drive shaft out. I see you have what looks like an aftermarket differential fill plug installed... mine's rusted in/stripped, so that'll be the biggest task with this. Will pull the cover and clean it out... curious what the diff fluid looks like after 210K miles - am sure it's never been serviced.
@1aauto Cool, thanks for the fast reply and I plan on ordering from your site very soon.
u guys rock! thank U for the vid :)
Thanks so much for this video! I'm replacing my pinion seal on my 88 GMC S15 tomorrow and this will help me perfectly!
+Ben Bastin Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Thank you for the video. I Learn stuff off of these videos please keep them coming thank you
@jahanzebakhter1 The issue is that there is a crush sleeve on the pinion. If you overtighten it it will pull the pinion out of alignment with the gear, and there is no going back without replacing the sleeve.
There is a very small window that you have to stay in. So when you re-install you want it to be exactly where it was, and then just a touch more.
You can do this by measuring torque before taking it apart, or by marking the position of the nut.
thank you very much extreamly helpfull
Just what I needed. Gonna replace the seal on the dana 60 in my Willys.
great video and very helpful keep the videos comming.......
Wow Great work.
ur video helped me lot... i love ur home made tool..lol
Hey Man! Thanks for this video. It really helped me out.
Thanks for watching.

Could you please specify why the bolts / pinion / body was marked.
Why is it so important to align exactly.
Great Video! I now have a better understanding on this topic.
Ny question on my 2005 Mariner, should i get a rebuild differential or have someone just replace parts in the old one..and what type of shop do u go to get this repair
My 1986 Chevrolet K5 Blazer is leaking from the same spot....I'm so glad I found this video.
Also, would replacing this seal eliminate the chatter I hear from the rear end? Or is that a whole nother can of worms? haha
Hmm.. can you do a video on completely replaceing a rear differential?
Thank you. I feel I can now do this with confidence

The concept is the same but the dana 60 is going to be slightly more complicated with different gear sizes and also on how to adjust the lash on it.
One good video real to the point

Many times guys think the pinion seal is leaking but it's actually leaking past the pinion shaft and the yoke. It leaks through the spline, you see how easily the yoke came off. I suggest you clean up both parts ( the yoke and pinion) and apply a good sealer to the pinion and yoke splines before assembly.
Thats exactly what I was thinking. I've heard paematex #2 form a gasket works well for this application although some people use rtv even though it doesen't stand up to gear oil.
@wbmartin3 Thank you for visiting our auto repair channel on TH-cam.
perfect video thank you, I like how you use basic tools the whole time to help us backyard boys understand better :) even tho you didnt use jack stands :p just kidding
Any RTV at all? If so, where? Thank you! Great video btw!
Great!!! Thank you.
Thanks for watching.

when you have a pinion seal leak, do you need to replace bearing or the gear too?
Super helpful, direct, and to the point. Sub'd

so professional. good!
+friedchicken1981 thanks for checking us out! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Use a paint marker for your marks instead of a chisel. And just tie your driveshaft up instead of losing fluid. Also, instead of a ball peen, get you a dead blow.
+Jesse Halderson Thanks for the feedback!
would all of this be the same for my dana 60 14 bolt diffs in my 1975 jimmy?
Any auto repair shop should be able to handle the repair for you.
Great video thank you for sharing, Really wish I could find one with front seal replacement for 79 K10 4x4. I assume it's the same way? Thank you again 👍👍👍💯💯💯
saved me 50 bucks, thanks
useful video for something I thought I had to do. My 91 s10 pinion seal was dry. gear oil is leaking out from around the front of the yoke where the washer and nut go???? No one can seem to figure out why so if a new yoke doesnt fix it im going to just get an 8.5 from a 2nd gen s10 and put that in there... stronger and hopefully no leaks...
I love your wooden specialized tool
+Hunter Linville Thanks for checking us out. 1AAuto.com
@nico27004 Yeah, use what it says in the manual. Ask at the place you're going to get it at, if you cannot find it.
Is this applications the same for a 2014 2500 ram.
Pinion Seal spring could be coated with sticky grease so it does not come off during installation.
Wish i had watched this video before i removed my yoke....Now i dont know where to install the yoke nut to? as to how much to tighten it down to. I thought it was just a set amount or tourque to set didnt know about the crush sleeve. Any ideas on how to resolve this? I have a 84 K10 1/2 ton with 10 bolt rearend. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
nice exhaust! lol. must live in the north.
I forgot to mark my pinion yolk on my 2003 silverado when I took it off . Is there anyway to tighten that nut down to where it was or is there a a certain number of threads that need to be seen?
You may want to check for a tire that could be out of balance.
im working on what i.v been told is a p30 pionion seal has bad leak-it looks like is has a double nut on it with a metal washer type that you bend over ,inch and 1/8 wont fit one and three 3.16 have to pound on dont like that -so did they use a lock nut over another nut-and how can i tell what rear that i actually have thanks great video
I have a question, I bought I pinion seal but it didn't have a lip like the 1 in the video, it is just a ring shape seal but it seems to fit, should I have bought one with a lip?
Great videos as usual. .bit do you have to remove the whole drive shaft or could you just strap it up out of the way?
my manual says to use 90w gear oil. can you use like 70w 90 or do i have to look for just 90w?
Thanks, looks like a simple enough driveway mechanic job.
+Dennis McCracken Thank you for watching. Please let us know how the repair comes out! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Dennis McCracken , not in the freezing winter.
Awesome!!!

no rtv sealant on the splines of yoke and washer?
Great video. I got a little ahead of myself and didn't mark the shaft or anything. What should I do to make sure thing are lined up.
The correct way is to tighten it up with a torque wrench to manufacturing specifications.
Do you need to this with the car lifted or can I do it on ground if I want? I mean even without jacking it up. Thanks!
My rear axle yolk ain’t coming off that easy what do you do if it’s stuck on there good
Thank you again. Would you help me again to replaced differential Axle Seals. What tools I need.
Also same E250 do they have Spark Plug (4 Legs) Bosh. I like that kind spark Plug.
Thank you so much in advance.
We currently do not have an auto repair video with this particular repair. You may want to replace the spark plugs with the factory recommended plugs. Have a great day! 1aauto
Thanks

Torque on anything that is rotated is properly expressed as lb/ft not ft/lb. Linear torque is expressed as ft/lbs
I have a low squeaking sound coming from the rear axle when the JEEP 2005 Cherokee is ONLY in Drive. It usually goes away when the vehicle is heated up or has been on the road for 20 minutes. This has been happening now for 1 month. What could this be as it only happens when the vehicle is in DRIVE.
After removing the nut from the yoke, the yoke won't just slide off. Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the yoke?
would it be wise to put a glob of grease after installing the new seal and before putting the yoke thingy??
+blkblky Thank you for checking us out. You may certainly apply grease after installing the new seal. 1aauto.com
I bought a new yoke that comes with the new seal and washer my question is do I just make sure there's no play and connect the Driveline I feel like having the bolt be marked and the yolk be marked kind of useless I'm working on a 98 GMC K 1500 5.0 automatic four-wheel drive
You need to measure the rotating torque with an inch-pound torque wrench PRIOR to removing the old yoke and nut.
do you have a vidoe replacing the pinion seal in a 2003 crown vic LX?
We currently do not have an auto repair video on that particular repair. Thanks for asking. 1aauto.com
Good Video. Regarding the size of the nut, 32mm is just over 1-1/4". This is consistent with what I found on my C10 truck (similar to the Blazer shown).
OK so what do you do if you for got to mark were everything was at ?
You must not have snow and salt where you live that was a vary clean undercarriage for a winter truck.
6:24
Just gonna use my impact gun. A couple turns or so. Rotated it like 10 times.
Your pinion bearing isnt going to be very happy about that.
I got leak from this seal.. And I drove the around 50 km or more with very noisy sound from the difrenchial.. Please guide whether I change the seal or the difrenchial?
What about the rear axle bearings
