As a history teacher, I have to say your videos are excellent and I always recommend my students to watch these videos at home (if we don't have enough time in class). Are you hiring for positions in research assistance, narrators, etc..?

Thank you Chantal! That's great to hear. I'm not currently hiring - it's just me at the moment, and doing this between other jobs. But you can find out more about the channel at the website and get in touch with suggestions there - particularly interested to hear from teachers about what subjects would be useful in class / for homework. www.epichistory.tv/faq/

I didn't know that Denmark and Russia has been working so much together through history

    • @vinllga
      @vinllga 8 ปีที่แล้ว +109

mother of Nicolas II. (Empress Maria Feodorovna) was daughter of Danish king. Danish duchy Schlezwig-Holstein was among other lands in title of Russian emperors from mid of 18 century. In Copenhagen always wandered many Russian nobles and members of tsar dinasty all 19 century. In 18 century Denmark was place of exile for deposed dynastic line of Ivan VI and Anna Ioannovna. And in cause of war Denmark together with Russia had to lock access to the Baltic Sea for enemy fleet.

Great video, but there's one request. Please evaluate the history very carefully when you reach the revolution and especially the Second world war.
These periods really hurt the Russian audience, especially when the author's position is reduced to the repetition of Hollywood films - as the stupidest and thoroughly false "Enemy at the gate", for example.
Your videos still seemed to me quite objective and accurate (some nuances to which you can find fault, crayons and do not deserve special attention, against the background of a fairly accurate narrative), and that's why I write to you with a request to continue exactly the same as it was until now. Perhaps for the first time I see in the video made in Western Europe or the United States accurate and fairly objective description of the history of Russia, without any politics and demonization. This is unexpected and allows us to hope that it is still possible to establish some kind of bridge for normal relations between us.
Therefore, I would like to suggest some moments that may hurt the Russian audience. This description of the revolution (usually demoniziruet Communists as evil villains, that is completely wrong. Their ideology is unusual, but quite humane, and after declassified archives of the Ministry of defense and part of the archives of the KGB suddenly yyasnilos that stories about the terrible Gulag - just nonsense for the most part, the GULAG - is the usual system of execution of sentences, something between the usual prison or penal servitude, which was used in the United States in the same years)
And one more thing - the description of the second world war. I would not like to see a common fake about the evil Commissars who for some reason are being driven unarmed soldiers at the machine guns. The ratio of losses between the Reich (including the Reich allies) and the USSR on the Eastern front is about 1 to 1.3, in figures of about 8.5 million against 10.5 million.
But in General, the USSR lost about 27 million people, and the remaining 16.5 million are peaceful people killed by the Nazis.
With respect, hope that you will remain objective and further.

Awesome video, always love your content. But in the video in 1686 the Holy Roman Empire is shown with the Netherlands still attached. Minor mistake, but the Dutch were away for almost 100 years. Also we (the Dutch) have still a lot of record that Tsar Peter the Great came to visit the Netherlands to ask for help on building a fleet, hence creating good relations between the countries. Alongside expanding trade between the Baltics and the Netherlands which the Dutch imported most of their wealth and grain from. Cant wait till your next video.

That maybe, but he also usually had a numerous, or even huge numerous advantage over his oponents. And he often used that to push his troops into a foolish bayonet charges in which lot of them were killed by enemies bullets (Especially when he fought in second anti-France coalition in Italy and Switzerland). But of course he had some genius victories for exaple against Polish-Lithuanian troops under Stołowicze battle in 1771. Suworow is definitely notone meaning person... he had same bad, as good sides as a military leader...

I'm not at all sure that the Battle of Narva (1700) would earn one of the greatest victory of military history, although in Sweden it has been considered among their greatest victories.
Swedish army by the way was half Finnish, but still the battle is poorly known in Finland (the Battles in the 30 Year War are better known). And it also had 500 men strong Estonian regiments of Swedish army.

There you will find "Ukraine the land of the Cossacks" All this "Ukraine never excist" is pure russian propaganda because in fact there was no Russia before Peter the first. People from the Rus fled to the fields from polish repression and create the cossack hetmanat on ukraine. After the cossacks were dissolve by the russian empire the people on ukraine started calling themself as ukrainians. Some would argue that. The first British colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. In both Virginia and Massachusetts, the colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans.
Native Americans are considered US citizens and some natives of the Hohokan Tribe in the SW part of the Country have roots going back to the Pioneer/Formative period (AD 1-750).

vinllga What sets Peter the Great apart from these rulers is that they led long established powerful states.France, for example, under Louis XIV,contained half the population of Europe and was the all powerful terror of the region.Peter had to create the infrastructure of the state;he built the navy, the standing army, cities, etc. In a span of about thirty years Peter transformed a medieval state into a modern power.I do not believe any European monarch can compare to this colossus!

    • @vinllga

bedstuy rover common feature of all those rulers is that they have very much respect to sciences and arts, and made their states more powerful and influential, for example Phillip II can united all kingdoms of Spaine in one state, Carlos V conquered the South and Central America, Luis XIV and Peter t.G. established effective scientific development, beginning from Academies of sciences and universities in their countries. Peter, btw, was the member of Royal Society, and diploma of election he was handed personally by Isaac Newton!

Ukraine exist way beyond 1600s as "The Ukraine," literally mean "Borderland" or "Frontier."
On the Italian map of "European Tartaria" (1684). Dnieper Ukraine is marked as "Vkraine or the land of Zaporozhian Cossacks" (Vkraina o Paese de Cosacchi di Zaporowa). In the east there is "Vkraine or the land of Don Cossacks, who are subject to Muscovy" (Vkraina overo Paese de Cosacchi Tanaiti Soggetti al Moscovita).
Meanwhile, The oldest recorded mention of the word ukraina is found in the Kievan Chronicle under the year 1187:
ѡ нем же Ѹкраина много постона.(ō nem zhe Ukraina mnogo postona).

Zaporozhian Cossacs never called themselves "Ukraines", they called themselves Russians, and followed Orthodox faith, and absolute majority of them were Russians peasant, who ran away from their aristocratic masters. Cossacs called "Ukraines" their enemies from Eastern Polland, Russians from Galych-Volynean princedom, who changed their fath to Catholic church, and both of these sides used every possible opportunity to fight against each other.
Also this region has become known as Eastern Ukraine only in Soviet Period, when occupation communist government decided to destroy old Russian culture, so one of their ideas was to transfer to Ukraine and "ukrainize" Western Russia also known as Novorossiya.
