Alana, my dad was a US Navy fighter pilot, so my first flight as a child, my dad explained every noise during take off, landing and during the flight. Remembering all that has calmed me down for nearly 70 years.
My husband hates flying. He doesn't know I do this with a purpose, but I talk all through take-off, landing, and turbulence. I say things like, "Remember when..." or tell him something Im excited about on our trip. Just positive comments, not questions. I also download movies or shows. I try to find things related to our destination.
My feet would always freeze on flights and I would get terrible cramps. I got smart and bought some Merino Wool Compression Socks and they have been a Game Changer! No longer have any issues whatsoever. Good for you Ilana for facing your fear. I'm sure you've seen that it does get easier the more you do it. I actually love to fly. 🥰
After having a brain injury I had to learn to ground myself to calm down. I learned to sit straight with my feet on the floor and to focus on pushing my feet onto the floor. Learning to focus on something really helps to calm your mind. Thank you for your tips!!
Another helpful tip is to spritz your blanket/pillow, scarf, or even your sweater/jacket or outer garment with a lightly scented peppermint oil or comforting scents. Just enough for you to smell and not too much to strangle your neighbor.😊. Ginger candies, peppermints or chewing gum are helpful also, especially during air turbulence.
I have flown all over the world and have flight anxiety. Obviously, in my case, the destination outweighs the stress of flying but it's still a real thing. Calming new age music and eye masks make a difference. It transports me a bit. Yes, I am jolted awake with turbulence but I can get right back into "it" afterward. Thank you for your channel, it's really helpful.
Yes!!! Flight anxiety!! Yikes! I get anxious just thinking about flying!! And I agree with distractions. Distracting myself is a huge help, ear buds, watching movies, videos anything to distract from the flight. And I do the same thing during turbulence. Watch the flight attendances! If they aren't nervous or upset, it's all good!
I’m in my 70’s and have not flown in about 30 years. I was always anxious in the past. But now I think I would not be so anxious. I’m looking forward to my first flight in the very near future.
I just did a long haul flight to Greece and the head/neck pillow with the eye mask was a lifesaver especially since I ended up in a middle seat and didn’t want to accidentally fall asleep on a stranger’s shoulder. I wore my noise canceling headphones as well and really felt cocooned and was able to actually grab a few hours of rest.
Travel luggage scale is a game changer, and it is so small and affordable. Also a hack I use is to weigh my packing cubes as I go along and then have an idea of which cubes go in which suitcase to keep the weight even and under the limit.
I used a luggage cover on my last flight. When I claimed my suitcase at the end of the flight, it was dirty and greasy. That is normal for planes but it kept the suitcase cleaner and perhaps works to keep someone from opening my bag and stealing something inside.
I bought a passport wallet similar to yours about 20 years ago and it is such a life saver that when we traveled with friends and they couldn’t figure out where they put their documents I ran out and got them their own travel wallet so they never have that trouble again. I swear by a travel wallet if you have more than 1-2 people traveling together.
Love that you share your strategies for flight anxiety. So many people struggle and don’t have the tools to help. Instead of the foot hammock, I still like to bring a beach ball and blow up to my desired size I put it on the floor for my feet. Makes sleeping much easier. Thanks for your great ideas in every single one of your videos.❤Stay safe!
I have so much flight anxiety. If I’m traveling with someone I take a drowsy Dramamine and knock out. If I’m alone I make sure I have some favorite movies downloaded to watch.
I unfortunately have to take medicine to make it through the crowds and flying. But just for general panic/anxiety I use the 5 sense rule. What can I see, what can I smell, what can I hear, what can I taste and what can I touch? And it really does take your mind off of what you are worrying about. Hope this helps! Wishing you safe, happy travels.
Thank you for your honesty. I suffer from this as well, and realized it is a control issue for me. When im not driving, I have it as well. I read that sour candy, peppermints or gum helps to take your mind off it. As well as watching your favorite shows for comfort as a passenger. Again thank you for normalizing this issue.
I haven't flown on an airplane for 10 years. It scares me so much. My husband would really like for me to try it again. After watching this video, I will do my best to get brave and get on an airplane.
Excellent advice - don't be scared until the flight attendents are freakinng out!!! I am fortunate to have started flying at the young age of 10 with my parents telling us how exciting the flight would be (my siblings and I flew unaccompanied....) I am also a former flight nurse which equals oodles of flights in small aircraft and helicopters even during haboobs. The only time I can remember having noticeable flight anxiety was my first flight after 9/11. It passed quickly when I told myself "I refuse to live in fear". This mantra has served me well since I was a military wife during the first Gulf War.
Hello, Brian here, long time viewer first time comment. I just wanted to tell you what a phenomenal post this was. My wife and I are going to go on our first cruise next year to Alaska. We're going on a cruise because of some serious anxiety issues I have. It takes care of some of the concerns. And one of the things that has enabled me to look forward to it are the wonderful videos you post. This post in particular was helpful. I was familiar with some of the solutions that you were told to help cope with anxiety and also heard some new ones. Thank you for always taking time to speak to things that are helpful like this.
Because I have motion sickness, I take Bonine when flying or cruising, and it lasts for 12 hours. I take it daily, even on days when in port. It even helps with anxiety. Thank you for your videos!
The foot hammock and eye mask with a good pillow are essential on overnight flights. My wife and I are aisle to aisle people and recently we have been trying to book premium economy or work a business class upgrade with miles. I think the key on overnights is to turn off the in flight entertainment and prepare for sleep soon after service from the flight attendants. One thing I carry on all flights is a light weight quarter zip pull over.
That electronic organizer is wonderful. It keeps all your wires, charging items etc in one place. Two helpful hints: buy a light colour so you can easily find it in your bag (I have light blue) and add a charm to one of the zippers. I'm forever forgetting which pocket has my power bank. I added the charm to that zipper pull.
According to what my mom told me I’ve been flying since 1973 but I was only one so I don’t remember. However from what I do remember even as a kid was that we’d get some gum before we got in the plane so that we could have something to chew on to help with the ear popping. Also, this is for anyone but especially men because we aren’t carrying anything one of those bags 😂 but a good travel backpack and a smaller backpack that can fold into itself when you’re at your destination. The bigger travel backpack can allow you to do carryon more easily because you can fit more cloths and carry your devices. The smaller one can fold into itself but when you’re at your destination it’s just a regular backpack that you can carry all of your other stuff in like your water, jacket or whatever.
I have a passport holder like the pink one you showed , but I am finding I constantly have to take it out of the holder going through security especially international travel, so I have stopped using it. I like the gray one better.
Hi. I take a decongestant one hour before I fly. Nasal spray one hour into flight. One hour after I land I take another decongestant. All was okay with my pharmacist. No plugged ears or saw jaw. Life saver
I do roughly the same. The very first time I flew I had the awful experience of not being able to pop my ears. I didn’t know what was happening at the time so I didn’t know what to do to fix it. Almost 30 years later, I will never fly without taking a decongestant pre-flight.
Thank you! Flying Tuesday, Toronto-Montreal to Barcelona. I have also purchased an over the tray table organizer for the plane. Will see how much I use it this trip. Going to add the disinfectant wipes to my carry on before I forget 😂
This video is great because I always fly with my sister who is an avid cruiser but has severe anxiety about flying. We live in the Midwest so we always have to fly to cruise ports, that part is hard for her. Thank you for sharing Ilana!
More great ideas🎉 Love, LOVE using foot hammock (plus can used it to rest legs in movie theater🍿) 🤔Hoping to NOT over pack but a *cute soft blanket is very tempting to bring on flight❤ (I’m thinking if I can’t wash that microfiber beach towel after flight, I wouldn’t use the one for my cruise, bc I imagine the seats to be dirtier than sand? 😂) 💡 Tip: The carry on item we have by our feet has been a challenge to slide & store under seat in front of me, so folded tiny in its side pocket, I’m using an inexpensive satin pillowcase to assist me. Smooth case fits over my favorite backpack & of course, available in countless colors. Bf I exit plane, I’m reversing it, & folding it w/ icky side together, making it tidy to then put it back into backpack, & have it ready to flip back to shinny side out to use on flight home😊 No doubt I’ll look ridiculous dropping my pretty backpack into silky case, but I’ll be happy my personal bag is easy to move during flight & not resting on dirty floor. & very very happy I if can remember case is there to use; I am already overpackin’ 😂 Glad I took suggestion to get a travel luggage scale bc it allows confidence when I’m unpacking, & repacking & also, I am finding the compression cubes convenient & easy to use. I’m soooooo grateful this help is available for my upcoming cruise bc with these videos, along with the FANTASTIC planner from Life Well Cruised, I feel I’m ready to have a trip of a lifetime! *cozy blanket is a good idea & reminded me I’d would love to see a video about things we can’t take with us traveling, not just what can’t be packed, but what is missed most from home and how to adjust to missing creature comforts that are not practical to bring. Are there items that make life easier at home but are too big to take along cruising? Maybe I’m a homebodies thinking I want my fun stuff from home, but I can’t pack most my luxury items: my beloved pillows 🥰 puffy bed comforter 🛌 sunroof to see sky 🚙 stack of bedtime reading options 📚 🤓 😂 Can I sit around lounging without feet up on an ottoman? 😜 Manage devise, like my tablet, without my perfect floor stand? 🤨 (🙄Kidding, it’s a vacation so no devises for us) ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Truly, am I the only cruiser whining about what I’m to miss?! There absolutely no room for my comfortable 20+ yrs old favorite robe to be packed? 😮 But, but, but. Mostly… how do cruisers function without their pets?!
I load books on my iphone Kindle app and movies on a few other apps. I always read more than one book on a trip and when they're on my phone, i don't have the weight or bulk of actual books. I also enjoy a few games and trying to visualize being on the cruise shop already. You have good tips that i will try!
The electronics organizer bag looks lovely. I have the INIU Portable Charger, and it is the best. I always have it on holiday. It is a necessity and never lets me down.
Wife and I fly southwest. I bring past issues of railroad magazines I right for. It's the only time I can get caught up !. I have 6 months of issues as of right now I am taking on our cruise ìn February
On long flights I always bring something like Liquid IV or another water mixin that helps with hydration and electrolytes as dehydration makes jet lag worse. Also I love my luggage protector as I like to put stickers on my suitcase from the places I’ve been (kind of like the old trunks you’d see)
@@QueenKayKay47 Just wait until they start allowing people to have phone conversation during flight. Listening to the person in the seat next to me blabbing mindlessly away to someone sounds like a nightmare.
I've traveled carry on only, and I love all these organizers. However, a few of them together just add more weight to a cross body. I have a large zipper pouch that I put things in that I'll actually need while in my seat. It works.
There is a non-drowsy form of Dramamine plus you can find it in generic form which is cheaper and works just fine! Also, don't put lotions on your hands or body before a flight. Certain options contain a chemical that can set the security systems off at the TSA check points. It happened to an elderly friend of mine. She had put lotion on her hands and arms. TSA caused her and her husband to mis a flight to their granddaughters wedding rehearsal. They had to catch a flight the morning of the wedding because what TSA did to them.
Thank you so much for sharing that you have flight anxiety. I do too. I get very uneasy and restless around two hours of flying. I keep my seat belt on the whole time. I don't go to the bathroom. I want to fly to Europe but I'm afraid I won't get through the long flight from the East coast. I think a lot of your tips will help me. Especially the coffee one. I'm going to fly over the holidays and I will try your tips. Thanks again for sharing something personal to help your community
@@Belinda-BJ I can relate to the bathroom avoidance and keeping a seat belt on. I do the same! However I do go to the bathroom on longer flights, lol. I have found that watching a tv series or sleeping helps for those Europe flights
Thank you for this video. I'm an anxious traveler, in general. I love your videos because you always have such great tips, and I particularly appreciate that you provide links to everything!

I’ve been using my girls pop it as fidgeting device and has helped me a ton. In my case my anxiety has gone a lot better thanks to that.
I will happily check my luggage with air tag as the carry on weight in Australia 🇦🇺 is only 7kilos. But my carry on bag is always carefully packed with flight essentials which include packing cube with two days of clothes, sandals, toiletries, makeup, noise cancelling headphones, medication, eye mask, neck pillow, kindle, battery, water bottle and cross body bag which I wear at all times holding passport, phone, lip balm, chewing gum and hand cream. Helps my anxiety knowing that if my checked bag went missing I would have my essentials 🌈 Definitely wear comfy layers and shoes. Don’t forget wipes and hand sanitiser - planes are dirty! I will let you know how the strap on eye mask works, as ordered one for upcoming flight ✈️ Thanks for your channel ❤️✅
Lots of great tips. I have been following u for the past year since we booked our first cruise in November 2025. I took my first flight last year and loved these tips thank you. Had a lot of first at 55 lately 🥰
Just a note concerning noise cancelling earbuds or headphones, they don't cancell all the noise. You still hear some frequencies, but a lot less than whitout them. That way, when you land, you are less tired because the noise tire you after a while.
Great video!! I also have anxiety for the airport and flight experience. I love all your flight must haves and hacks as I also use most if them. I totally agree to secure your seat ahead of time as it helps to not have to worry if you get a seat or get bumped. Thank you so much!!
I use a colorful luggage protector so it distinguishes my suitcase from others. I’ve had someone take my luggage off the belt and I didn’t realize it. I was standing there waiting for it and starting to get worried while my husband was circling around the airport waiting for me to come out. 31:07 I happened to notice it sitting on the floor. Now no one can mistake mine for theirs.
Here I am, once again, watching your extremely informative and helpful video while I’m packing for our upcoming cruise! Of course I just saw some things useful that I need to add to my cruise essentials tote. 😊😊 We are heading to Port of Miami with our “Best of Life Well Cruised” packed suitcases 😂😊
@ Thanks so much! We are doing the Thanksgiving sailing on Carnival Celebration! This is actually my first time sailing on an actual Holiday so I am prepared AND pretty excited! 😊
We discovered air Ca and a this last summer. We had taken a train trip to Vancouver and flew back to San Diego. It took 3 hours!!! We love Victoria and Vancouver.
What helps me before a long flight is, I hit the airport bar, and knock back two doubles before boarding, then when the plane hits cruising altitude it's nap time, and if I'm lucky when I wake up it's almost time to land. Plus if you have anxiety it might help that too.
My ex-girlfriend used to have terrible anxiety about flying until I started doing an energy guided meditation with her while on the plane and this is going to sound weird but it involves basically playing footsies and holding hands LOL. Our feet and hands have a very high concentration of very sensitive pressure points and nerve endings that, when stimulated, they trigger the brain to release massive amounts of oxytocin in your bodies. If she doesn't miss anything else about me, I know for a fact she misses this LOL
I just love your transparency in this video. Thank you so much for sharing how you are conquering your fear of flying, and many of those tips can be transferred to other fears as well. I also like to read in a travel Bible or a Bible app which I find very comforting.
Thanks for sharing your flying anxiety! I am still not 100% with flying, but I also started downloading Netflix or similar shows to watch in-flight or if reading I have my favorite Pandora playlist downloaded. I love traveling so I refuse to let flying stop me, with tricks you can distract yourself.
Great review of your flying routine and anxiety. It's great that you found what works for your travels. My husband and I are both pilots, and you explained exactly what we didn't understand. Thank you. I ordered the red organizer insert for my personal bag (your original blue and white stripe)! He uses the Bose over-the-ear noise-canceling headset because he wears hearing aids. We love our Level 8 (pickle green). I also pack eyedrops, cough drops, and Kleenex because when you need it, you need it.
Thanks for showing the passport holder w/space or an AirTag. I purchased one for my passport. Long story short, i dropped mine once in the airport and luckily got it back before my flight.
Thank you for showing your vulnerability in this video with flying. I still enjoy flying and used to absolutely love it. I just don’t like when it gets really bumpy. I was in a really bad car wreck about six years ago and I’m more nervous sometimes as a passenger in a car that I am on a plane. that’s great that you’re giving pointers for others who do not prefer to fly!! by the way I’m only 4 foot 11 so I love the foot hammock add longer flights. Plus a pillow because I am short when the headrest hits my head and pushes my head down so I always bring a neck pillow.. I always bring those cute blocks with candy and throat lozenges!!
Anxious flyer here. Your tips are wonderful, thank you! The 5 senses one is new to me. I'm flying soon and will be putting that into use. To your point about wrapping a scarf etc around yourself that works very well for me. Keeping myself distracted is key. The other thing I do is I don't eat before getting on a plane and if I eat anything in flight it's a protein bar, etc. Anxiety and nausea go hand in hand for me and not eating lessens my anxiety about getting sick on the plane. Thank you for what you do!
As someone who flow over 3500 times by now im impressed how many things people bring on the plane 😂. I carry my passport money my phone some extra water and food thats it. And im comfortable flying lon haul. Flew europe to australia that way about 50 times.

Oh Ilana, thank you so much for the flight anxiety tips! My worry begins before the day of the flight. As we take off, I say the Lord's prayer and envision God's hands lifting us up. I'll definitely try some of your techniques.🤗
I love your videos Ilana! Very informative, friendly, not boring (very important) - we started by watching your cruising vids before our first cruise - third one in a few weeks then Mediterranean Cruise in April YAY! Just watched this one and needed to compliment you yet again. Fantastic tips and tricks and will be adding lots of it to our travel packing list!!! Hi from Australia! :)
I have a pair of slip-on shoes that is one size larger than my size that I call my 'flying shoes'. Easy on-off at security and not painful if my feet swell on the flight. One thing I would like flights to get on their in-flight entertainment is a white noise channel. I think I saw that some have "Calm" but I really like white noise. Another anxiety point is to just accept that's who you are. I'm a good flier but pre-trip anxiety is big. About a week before I start worrying about getting to the airport on time, getting the flight number wrong, going to the wrong place etc. (Thank GOD Edmonton only has one airport or I'd worry about that, too.) Back with paper tickets I always wanted to check and re-check and had to keep saying "No you just checked, you have it right, you're good to go." Then I switched to "check it". Check it 50 times a day if you want. Get out of bed in the middle of the night and check it if you need to. Same with packing. If you're a pre-packer and you're lying in bed two days before "Oh my God, did I remember the ..." Check it. Get out of bed, open your suitcase and check it. Check it in the morning again if you need to.
Thanks for a very informative video. I have been dealing with flight anxiety forever! I keep going and I also have chronic migraine headaches. I always have a bottle of water, candies, bars and I also bring eye drops for dry eyes.❤
I seen on video on TH-cam, when you get anxious or turbulence to try writing with your Non dominat hand, it make you focus on trying to write since you are not use to writing with that hand. For me when we hitting turbulence, I take deep breath and I tell myself it normal part of flying and we will be over it soon.
I get very nervous flying as well. I always watch the flight attendants. I watch them walk around doing whatever they need to do. I also listen to music or read a book.
Hello Illana; ❤ your content. I enjoy so much, I even watch those that don’t pertain to me & I usually learn something useful. Thank you so much for what you & your family provide to us travelers. Have you ever thought about doing travel/cruise videos for the budget conscious? I have checked out the items that you share within your content & quite frankly, some are very pricey for seniors on a fixed/limited income. Thanks, once again. Safe travels.
I always listen to an Audible book, pack my eye sleep mask . I seldom watch a movie as I believe the blue screen keeps me awake. My SIL who travels weekly for work advised me not to drink any alcohol as it enhances the effect. So if I do imbibe it will only be one drink. BTW I just ordered the Nomad Lane Bento bag. Can’t wait to use it. Portable chargers are a must. A warm light weight sweater is also so handy. I have a Pact set which I ❤ I laughed when I saw the blue adapter. I lent mine to a relative who was traveling and have not seen it since. I have purchased an updated one.
Thank you for sharing your flight anxiety tips. Fortunately, my flight anxiety is mostly limited to take-off, as long as I can avoid the claustrophobic anxiety by having an aisle seat, first row seat, or 1st class, along with medication. We do what we have to do! Other thoughts, I do travel with my insulated tumbler, usually a 20 or 30 oz Simple Modern, but not my huge 40 oz Stanley. And instead of the beverage carrier for your luggage, I like a velcro strap that goes around the tumbler and has a crossbody strap. Makes it easier to walk around and board with my cup. My fav is the one that's just the strap. Another fav for travel is a cell phone lanyard. Have you ever dropped your phone on the plane and had a hard time retrieving it? Next, I use silicone straps that attach to your earbuds. No worries about them falling out of your ear and getting lost. Last, a collapsible silicone cup with a lid. As soon as my drink arrives, I pour it into the cup and put on the lid. No more spilled drinks during turbulence. ✈
No Stanley but I use an insulated cup I got from amazon with a handle on top that locks and you carry, boot for bottom (thought stupid until I used it - game changer) as well as carrying pouch to hold stuff with strap on cruise. This was best tumbler purchase ever!!
@@LifeWellCruised It legit is one of the best things i have bought. I use it for my water at home and i find i drink more since i use my special cup!! Lol. I think it was about $20 or $25 and they have 30 oz and 40 oz sizes.
I do not have anxiety, but I hate flying! Did 2 transatlantic and 1 Pacific cruises one way so I did not have to fly both ways. Thanks for the things to try on the flight.

I do the same thing as my hubby hates flying as well.
I enjoyed your presentation and think it's lovely that you share advice with others regarding anxiety strategies.

@annenorthman8154 I loved the Merino compression socks and wearing slippers! Made a huge difference in comfort- I still didn't sleep but oh well!
Yes, wool! Wool socks are a must for me. They’re the only socks I’ll wear, and I live in Texas 🥵

It's so great to hear! I hope this video helps & that you have an amazing time!
@@ashleyc6511 wow, I hadn’t thought about when sitting next to a stranger. Thanks for the review
Travel luggage scale is a game changer, and it is so small and affordable. Also a hack I use is to weigh my packing cubes as I go along and then have an idea of which cubes go in which suitcase to keep the weight even and under the limit.
@@TrHiker57 that’s a really smart tip!
I used a luggage cover on my last flight. When I claimed my suitcase at the end of the flight, it was dirty and greasy. That is normal for planes but it kept the suitcase cleaner and perhaps works to keep someone from opening my bag and stealing something inside.
@@Nancy-w6f wow, great idea and this is true
I just bought a luggage cover not so much as to keep my luggage looking good, but to make it a deterrent for thieves.
@@Cruise-hair-why-care what an amazing idea & great hack!!! I’m going to have to remember this one
That’s a good extra tip!
I haven't flown on an airplane for 10 years. It scares me so much. My husband would really like for me to try it again. After watching this video, I will do my best to get brave and get on an airplane.
I’m glad this could help! I know it’s not easy, but I know you can do it and that you’ll be ok ❤️
Try the Gold Bond lotion for diabetics. It’s very moisturizing and soaks in great. It doesn’t make your hands feel greasy and it’s fragrance free.

(I’m thinking if I can’t wash that microfiber beach towel after flight, I wouldn’t use the one for my cruise, bc I imagine the seats to be dirtier than sand? 😂)
💡 Tip: The carry on item we have by our feet has been a challenge to slide & store under seat in front of me, so folded tiny in its side pocket, I’m using an inexpensive satin pillowcase to assist me. Smooth case fits over my favorite backpack & of course, available in countless colors.
Bf I exit plane, I’m reversing it, & folding it w/ icky side together, making it tidy to then put it back into backpack, & have it ready to flip back to shinny side out to use on flight home😊

Also, don't put lotions on your hands or body before a flight. Certain options contain a chemical that can set the security systems off at the TSA check points. One thing I would like flights to get on their in-flight entertainment is a white noise channel. I think I saw that some have "Calm" but I really like white noise. Another anxiety point is to just accept that's who you are. I'm a good flier but pre-trip anxiety is big. Back with paper tickets I always wanted to check and re-check and had to keep saying "No you just checked, you have it right, you're good to go." Then I switched to "check it". Check it 50 times a day if you want. Get out of bed in the middle of the night and check it if you need to. Same with packing. If you're a pre-packer and you're lying in bed two days before "Oh my God, did I remember the ..." Check it. Get out of bed, open your suitcase and check it. I lent mine to a relative who was traveling and have not seen it since. I have purchased an updated one.
Good point about the screen & good ideas! Let me know how you like the Bento Bag :)
Thanks for sharing this! I’ll look for the cell phone lanyard :)
No Stanley but I use an insulated cup I got from amazon with a handle on top that locks and you carry, boot for bottom (thought stupid until I used it - game changer) as well as carrying pouch to hold stuff with strap on cruise. This was best tumbler purchase ever!!
Wow! I like the carrying pouch
That is a great way to avoid flying! Lol
For anxiety, you could spray a cotton ball or ca piece of fabric with lavender to sniff.
The first row in economy plus is usually as spacious as business first class.
Thanks for all your insights!! Would have loved sóme likns for prooducts.
