Almost 30 years, the A320 family is still the only single-aisle aircraft series that I like, and still trying my best to fly with when I have to fly single-aisle planes. It's obviously much spacious in the cabin due to its wider fuselage and much properly positioned windows than the cramped 737.
Boeing makes some pretty decent planes (well, the 777 and 787, really), but Airbus makes better ones... Particularly when it comes to safety Airbus has a much better record, and the individual comparison between the A320 and 737 comes out particularly shockingly in Airbus' favour.
A friend of mine wasn't allowed to become a pilot. Then he started working in Tulouse and now he's working in Germany (Hamburg) and earning more than a pilot as an Plane Ingenieur.

I was there at the factory when Airbus delivered the 5000th A320 to MEA in January 2012! Amazing that they built another 2442 aircraft in a mere 5 years! And the new A320neo is in my opinion the best looking short to medium haul aircraft today!
Yet another fantastic video Joe, for a nervous flier like me, your videos help me realise it really is the safest way to travel. I've only ever travelled on airbus A320 and a321 as that's the only planes the airline I travel on use, but I guess it would be fair to say they are quite advanced, well equipped planes, I've yet to travel on a Boeing or other kind, but either way you look at it, planes are are an amazing piece of machinery and engineering, everytime one takes off with tons upon tons of weight becoming airborne 😀

Robert Faber It is strange that previously all-Boeing airlines are starting to go with Airbus. Another example is Delta Airlines before the NWA merger. DAL was primarily all McDonnell Douglas and Boeing with some L-1011s here and there. They got their current Airbus planes from NWA. I guess they liked them and are replacing them with the A350.
+Tuna Sandwiches - Yes indeed, though NorthWest itself of course only started switching to Airbus very late in its existence as well. I do remember that on Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (which is reasonably close to where I live, and was always NWA's European hub) the only McDonnell Douglas planes you could still see in the early '00s were MD11s from NorthWest. As for the A350, I'm not that surprised they're going for that. If you're a large enough airline to have money to invest in new airplanes (and Delta certainly is that), then this new generation of ultra-fuel-efficient carbon fibre planes are just locking out the competition. At the bottom end you'd still go for an A320neo or 737 MAX, because economies of scale have just made those two planes so incredibly cheap, and at the top end, the 747 and A380 still exist in little bubbles of their own with no real competition, but in between them, the 787 Dreamliner and A350XWB have just moved the game on so much that it's difficult to argue for even the most fervent pro-Boeing airlines to still buy a 777. Airbus stands slightly more of a chance of still selling significant numbers of A330neos because of the improvements it has over the regular A330, but sales figures don't lie, the 787 Dreamliner is clearing up in that segment of the market as well. It'll be interesting to see which of the two will first come out with a carbon fibre plane in the A320/737 range, because that could really shake up the market.
I bet those dislikes are from Boeing fanboys. They're a cancer and should be thrown into the ocean. They infest every aviation forum I've visited, spewing vicious attacks and pure hate. I don't know why they're so butthurt.
How does pilot monitor exterior of a plane during flight? For example, a flam stating from the engine? Or you relying on your control panel readings to guess what's going on before disaster strikes ?
If the situation needs, the normal method is to go to the passenger cabin and check the situation through the cabin windows where you can see the engines and the wings.
Captain Joe LOL how could I miss that part? :) I heard the fact about Airbus introducing the Side Stick, but somehow didn't hear the FBW part. Anyways, keep up the great videos! They really help a lot with ground school!!
My wife and I are taking our first flight ever in 3 weeks . Our plane is also going to be an a320 . Made sure to book a window seat too, I can't wait I'm absolutely stoked to take my first flight on this beast.
Ooh, that's a tough one. If I ran an airline, I'd stay well clear of the A340, since it's one of the least fuel-efficient airliners in the skies today, but I do think it is exceptionally good-looking, especially the A340-600 with its 75m of fuselage length...
Pilot Beko I could care less for A340 thanks to 747-8 (Lufthansa) and A380 any airline that has them, with my 3 favourite being Emirates, Air France and British airways. Both aircraft are better than A340 by far! 777, A350 and 787 same things!
Captain Joe, i prefer Airbus over Boeing, but you cant beat the looks of the 737-800, especially the front section and the winglets. That detail on the turbine fuselage not being completely round at the front... Just love it. Still, Airbus rules! Best aviation channel on TH-cam. Congrats!!!
When you moved the side stick I noticed on your artificial horizon the small '+' sign wasn't moving so your inputs must have been cancelled out. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also you make very good videos, keep going
+bumbaukkis3 - Having more power sounds fantastic, but don't forget it also means you have more responsibility... Plus, the whole thing has been used way too often by Boeing to simply blame pilot error for accidents that would have been perfectly preventable if the plane itself had also been allowed to do some thinking of its own.
In German usually we use the word England for the whole UK. (The same, as many languages use Allemania for Germany, and Allemania is also only a part of Germany.) And Captain Joe is a German.
I'm french but I prefer Boeing because it's less boring than Airbus. With the Airbus , as a lots of pilots say, the side-stick and all aids don't let the full control of the aircraft. The beoing looks like older and more rustic. Whatever , these are two amazing Aircraft manufacturer.
"Boring" was maybe not the right word but the fact that Human-machine interface system is facilitated with Airbus by a lots of automatisms and security so it reduces tasks. Whatever , You're the only youtuber with more than 100k followers (200k soon ) who answers to every comment and that's sound cool!
CLM Almost all air crashes (and road crashes) are caused by human error. Often this is due to misunderstanding our own senses, or focusing our thoughts in one area, and ignoring other important details. Automation of even one function drastically reduces the thought process required.... Try it with cruise control in your car. It's far easier to concentrate on the surroundings when you no longer have to warry about holding a steady speed manually.
Obviously But i talk with a pilot view , not a passenger who wants safety . For safety , i agree with you but for a pilot who wants to pilot an aircraft and don't manage a computer , Boeing is better
tin2001 "crashes are caused by human error" You then advise him to turn his cruise control on and look at the surroundings because it's easier. Absolute genius, how you haven't gotten a Nobel prize is beyond me
This is excellent video series! I am huge fan of Airbus overall and especially A320 family. I fly quite a lot in flight sims and have mentioned this channel on my videos before and this is something worth to mention once again! Keep up going with these high quality and very interesting videos. Hands down this is one of my most favorite channels!
Captain Joe It was just to precise. I love your channel because I fond of aircrafts and I achieve to understand almost all you say in your videos which allow me to improve oral comprehension in english !
Captain Joe Yes I realize my comment was not written the best way. I should have written that "in the A318, contrary to other A320 family's members, not just the fuselage lenght was modified but also the size of the vertical stabilizer".
Captain Joe Also, I had a question for you. Is the quality of radio sound good? It is sometimes difficult to understand ATC ? Thank you for your answer and I wish you a good flight ! ✈
Don't listen to these people Captain Joe. To me, you are a captain and you're living a better life than these good-for-nothing trolls. I love your videos, and so do many others. Keep doing what you're doing. You are a great inspiration, especially to student pilots like me... Thank you so much for your efforts in your presentations. I've learned so much from them.
The 320 also has the access door for hold 5. (The hold up the tail). It's rarely ever used except from checking the hold when theres visibly no cargo in holds 3 and 4 as the net is opaque. It's loaded through the main cargo door like a normal hold.
As far as I know, the A318 is the only family member that does not have the option for container loading for the lower deck cargo holds. It can only be bulk loaded. As you explained 319, 320 and 321 have this option and so far I have never noticed one that as not loaded with containers when I was a passenger on one. (I guess in the trade-off of the additional weight vs. the shorter turnarounds the shorter turnarounds win.)
My very first flight commercially ( at 53 years old) was on the A320. Very stable and competent aircraft. The various crews have all been great too! As for comfort, as a big boy (6'2" / 275) I have found that about 1 1/2 hours is about as long a flight as I can personally stand. Much over that mark and it becomes terribly uncomfortable and severely cramped feeling. I have done 9 flights now in the last 5 weeks and that is my two cents worth.
Ohh! Thank you Captain for a decent come back. I was waiting for your "Airbus Series" which you have already mentioned once earlier. Very good Captain, I really liked this. Waiting to see more on this series in the coming weeks..
Amazing video, I love the Airbus family, Im currently learning things for the future ill be more ready and have more knowledge about it. The A320's A330's A350's are my passion, hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷🔥
Regarding the other versions, you mentioned apart from fuselage lengths, the other dimensions remain the same throughout the family. I thought shorter buses have larger vertical stabilizer and rudder.
Dear +Captain Joe, I really appreciate your videos a lot. When talking about the A320 family, I would greatly appreciate if you could also talk a little about the differences in flying the various models (assuming you have the chance to fly not only the 320, but also 319 or 321).
That's excellent news, Joe! I've spent a lot of hours with PMDG 737 and 747 models in FSX so I can say that I know them reasonably well, but Airbus planes are kind of a terra incognita for me. Looking forward to fill the gaps with some fresh, juicy knowledge of the A320!
The UK produces far more than just the wings. Most of the seats are assembled in Kilkeel NI except the very upmarket ones which tend to be Italian and some of the business class ones made in Cwmbran Wales. Most of the aircraft on the flight line at Toulouse I worked on has RR engines of the Trent series (I don't remember seeing one that didn't). The avionics were supplied by BAe. If you want to find out just what those birds can do get yourself on a proofing flight. Now that was amazing.
I think the a318 has a taller vertical stabilizer to compensate for the lower arm lenght generated by the shorter fuselage. Also, I think it does not have a pressurized cargo hold, so it cannot carry live pets. I also think the a318 has in certain configuration the longest range out of the entire family, as BA uses it for transatlantic routes. It is also capable of STOL operations.
The fuselage sections of the A320 family are produced in Germany, but in Augsburg and Nordenham not in Hamburg. And maybe it is nice to know that the passenger and cargo doors are also produced in Germany in Donauwörth.
Almost 30 years, the A320 family is still the only single-aisle aircraft series that I like, and still trying my best to fly with when I have to fly single-aisle planes. It's obviously much spacious in the cabin due to its wider fuselage and much properly positioned windows than the cramped 737.

My wife and I are taking our first flight ever in 3 weeks . Our plane is also going to be an a320 . Made sure to book a window seat too, I can't wait I'm absolutely stoked to take my first flight on this beast.
great video.
i love A320 family more than airbus 340
Ooh, that's a tough one. If I ran an airline, I'd stay well clear of the A340, since it's one of the least fuel-efficient airliners in the skies today, but I do think it is exceptionally good-looking, especially the A340-600 with its 75m of fuselage length...
The A346 is quite a monster! I'd buy Boeings purely because they're lighter than Airbuses.

Congrats!!!
Dear Joe it is pronounced "new-matics" (pneu.. P is silent)
Stephen Mortimer in France we say Pneumatique
Le Academie Inglis insists on "new-matic"
You may use your P for "phew"
Do you know the saying .. "when in english do as the americans" ??
Thank you Stephen, my mother corrected it the same way, she´s the native in our family ;)
Always a good day when Captain Joe uploads!!
Joe will you want to fly other plane except the airbus a320 family maybe a boeing plane?
Elad Evron if its a boeing, i aint going
try a 787. Such a beautiful plane
If it ain't a Boeing ... I ain't going.!
Oh for sure, anything with wings will be fine for me :)
Anything with wings? ;) i.imgur.com/B87RyGP.jpg
Very good and can't wait to catch all the videos on the A320 series.
When you moved the side stick I noticed on your artificial horizon the small '+' sign wasn't moving so your inputs must have been cancelled out. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Also you make very good videos, keep going
The "Plus" sign only moves on ground, once you are airborne you won´t see the plus sign anymore. What you mean is the pitch attitude indicator. :)
Captain Joe
Oh thanks
I live in Toulouse and I get to see the Beluga very often :)
Always a lovely sight !
I prefer Boeing but these videos are making me prefer Airbus...
Nice to hear ;)
bumbaukkis3 explain your reason for preferring Boeing over Airbus, I'm curious
PS3GameProductions Looks, yoke, fuel burning (at some airplanes) and i my favourite plane is 757😆
PS3GameProductions I also like that Boeing gives more power to the pilot while Airbus gives more power to the computer
I've done the beluga. Thing can go vertical takeoff when empty! Hell of a ride! pure awesomeness!
#TeamAirbus!
But I'm a Boeing type of guy
This will be a great series. Very much looking forward to every episode !
You say England, but show a nap of Great Britain?
Come on CJ, there is a difference ;-)
The Broughton factory is actually in Wales too.
Richard Featherstone, thats what i was reffering to. sorry if i implied it was just England
In German usually we use the word England for the whole UK. (The same, as many languages use Allemania for Germany, and Allemania is also only a part of Germany.) And Captain Joe is a German.
I thought the wings were made in Wales?
MrWurschtl that's offensive. England isn't the UK any more than Bavaria is Germany. Look at a map.
joe, i love your videos, they are very informative. i'm also a first officer of an A320 with airasia. love your work. keep it up!
Is the airbus a320 known to fly smoothly? I had a flight yesterday and it was extremely smooth my drink was actually still.
Dein Englisch is um so viel besser als das bei den Videos in denen Lufthansa Piloten fliegen.. das find ich große Klasse.. :D
Totally agree with you, except for the "Boring" part :)
CLM
Almost all air crashes (and road crashes) are caused by human error.
For safety , i agree with you but for a pilot who wants to pilot an aircraft and don't manage a computer , Boeing is better
tin2001 "crashes are caused by human error"
You then advise him to turn his cruise control on and look at the surroundings because it's easier.
Absolute genius, how you haven't gotten a Nobel prize is beyond me
"737k views" :o
Lol
This is excellent video series! I am huge fan of Airbus overall and especially A320 family. I fly quite a lot in flight sims and have mentioned this channel on my videos before and this is something worth to mention once again!
Keep up going with these high quality and very interesting videos. Hands down this is one of my most favorite channels!
The A318 is not exactly identical in its dimension. Airbus had to enlarge the vertical stabilizer in order to compensate the much shorter fuselage.
I agree, and I said basically the same ;)
Captain Joe It was just to precise.
You got some good ideas with this new series, keep tjis goong as long as possible, thumbs up from sweden 👍🏻:D
Thanks from Sweden, appreciate it!
can I become pilot having spects
Anay Kulkarni yes you can
thank you
Anay Kulkarni yes, but do research.
As a Boeing guy I hate Airbus, but I really love this channel! I always learn a bunch!
'Captain joe' [sits in first officer seat]
try counting his stripes.
Yesterday´s news ;)
Shawn Hunt how??????
Randy thanks for the information man
Don't listen to these people Captain Joe.
I am REALLY sorry to say that, but I prefer Boeing's jets, as flying them is waaaay more interesting! #TeamBoeing
I never said, that either of them is better :)
Darth Vader I'm sure they have autopilot on the Death Star, don't worry about it
As far as I know, the A318 is the only family member that does not have the option for container loading for the lower deck cargo holds. It can only be bulk loaded. As you explained 319, 320 and 321 have this option and so far I have never noticed one that as not loaded with containers when I was a passenger on one. (I guess in the trade-off of the additional weight vs. the shorter turnarounds the shorter turnarounds win.)
#TEAMBOING
the blazing blaziken I'm #TEAMBOEING! Just kidding I prefer the A320 to the 737 anyday
Really excited about this series. Great work Captain!
Ohh! Thank you Captain for a decent come back. I was waiting for your "Airbus Series" which you have already mentioned once earlier. Very good Captain, I really liked this. Waiting to see more on this series in the coming weeks..
Beluga is like always having a headache!
sehr geil! gut gestaltet und informativreich 😊 weiter so!
Danke und gerne :)
I'll never be a pilot, but this is fascinating stuff! Thanks, Capt Joe.
Amazing video, I love the Airbus family, Im currently learning things for the future ill be more ready and have more knowledge about it. The A320's A330's A350's are my passion, hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷🔥
I just spend a half of the day watching your videos they are interesting hope you make the weight of the airplane video thanks
Regarding the other versions, you mentioned apart from fuselage lengths, the other dimensions remain the same throughout the family.
I thought shorter buses have larger vertical stabilizer and rudder.
That´s true Bernard, but only for the A318 :)
As a former 737 fan i am abusing the A320 in Aerofly FS2 thanks to you Joe! It has such a great Autopilot system compared to the former.
Keep posting! These videos are amazing and you explain everything so well!
Lovely video Joe. I will definitely adore the rest of the serie. Keep up the great work.
Greets,
Ward
Well, I wish my college teachers were this interested in sharing information like this gentleman here does! :D
Nice use of the fslabs a320 to show different parts of the aircraft. Keep up the great and informative videos CJ :)
This is my favorite plane, thank you :)
The fuselage sections of the A320 family are produced in Germany, but in Augsburg and Nordenham not in Hamburg. And maybe it is nice to know that the passenger and cargo doors are also produced in Germany in Donauwörth.
Love this new format!
Happy to hear that !
