I love this group and Amoeba store. I went to the Amoeba store in Los Angeles back in 2020. Then the lady was nice enough to give me a tour of the back area where they do the "whats in my bad" on the couch. I wanted to do an "whats in my bag", I asked her why don't think do people that aren't famous. She said they used to but it didn't work out. Anyways, I love Moonchild I saw them in concert with The Internet back in 2018 and I'm still smiling from that concert. They picked some great albums Hiatus Kiyote are a great group I can't get enough of their music either. They have amazing taste in music.
Wonderful group of folks that show a legitimate love for the Soul Music they play. Definitely folks who are the real deal, and their choices show it in spades. And wow that Hiatus Kayote shout out
Great picks!! My favorites are Earth Wind & Fire, D' Angelo, my homeboy from Richmond, Va. Robert Glasper, Ella & Louie, Coltane, Stan Getz &. Eriykah of course. I hear her as your biggest influence for sure! I know Chet Baker and Miles and others would be in your extended list. Check out "Butcher Brown" if you have not already also from Richmond. I have never heard of these people and thought Moonchild referred to John Zorn's jazzcore group of the same name but their picks are lit and I shall proceed to hear them.
They selected some classic soul picks that were essential to the black 90's experience, and now as I'm a 27 yr old alternative soul lover - who LOVES Moonchild.. its so cool that all of their influences are in the corner that I listen to them in. The same time I'd play D'Angelo, or Hiatus Kaiyote, 9th Wonder or Phonte... I'd certainly be playing Cure or Too Good. Thank you for becoming an amalgamation of all these wonderful artists Moonchild!
Perhaps we can get some metalheads back on the series? They seem to buy music they haven't heard yet; every single pick this band made was them getting a release they already own in a different format. Cool for them, but a waste for me as a viewer. Just ask them their favorites and have them chat about them if that's all you want. The whole point of places like Amoeba and this series in particular to me is to search for releases by old favorites and hopefully some new ones based on reviews, art, hearsay, etc. But hey, that's my take on it. More power to you if you don't buy anything new to you at a record store.
I came to write this - they knew all the records intimately before buying - dullsville. A store that size is a playground for discovery. Take a risk - you're not even paying for the records, so go crazy.
There’s a real split between artists who pick up albums that have influenced them that everyone has heard of and artists who pick up things they’ve never heard before and new music that they’re excited about. I very much prefer to watch the latter. Oh you bought a Curtis Mayfield album? Cool. 😂 Maybe these things are obscure to young people I dunno.

It’s so heartening to see young artists loving Ella, Getz etc. I love modern music too but keeping a thread to the past is important.
I saw them play a live show at Amoeba Hollywood (old location) in 2019, they were incredible! Great band.
