    The keyboard suites by Handel, here presented in the magistral rendering of Sviatoslav Richter, present a suggestive relationship to those of Bach. This should come as no surprise. After all, JS Bach and Handel were close contemporaries. Handel was born a German and trained and worked in Germany for a significant period before moving to London. Moreover, Handel keyboard works were less known than his orchestral and choral works such as Messiah or Wassermusik. Handel suites include preludes and fugues, highly complex and beautiful, reminding of Bach WTK. Handel was a respected organist master as well. It has been said that his productivity exceeded that of Bach. Many thanks Classical Music for posting this monumental and less known work

    Richter was a musician of genius. One may not neccessarily understand something he does, initially; but, later, one thinks, ah, yes, now I see what he is getting at. There is a divine simplicity about his playing and, even, a sort of ingenuousness. He makes the difficult and complex seem simple and transparent. There was, and is, nobody like him. I was privileged to hear him live once at the RFH and will never forget the sheer perfection of the sound he extracted from the instrument.

      He is the only musician that we have recordings of that I have ever referred to as a 'genius' as his piano playing has left me lost for alternative words to describe just how good he is. Stunning technique and control over tone, combined with a supreme artistic vision embedded in simplicity of approach.

Recitative: "Per te mi struggo, infido" here at 9:16 (Bach) and 10:50 (Telemann) we hear the 1707 paradigm - the "musical gene" - which will later be Bach, Telemann.

    What sheer beauty and soul comforting music Richter can create as nobody else. Technically perfect but maybe more important a master of soulful play full of emotions! This is why so many people love Sviatoslav Richter!
    Also hat off for Händel for these wonderful compositions, which are easier to listen to and therefore maybe more beautiful than some of the work o Bach.

      I also had the chance to attend a Richter recital in the 90s in Italy and was not very impressed.. After 30 years more of classical music listening I still have issues with Richter interpretations... There are some composers where He's really a force of nature like Prokofiev but on the classic or romantic repertoire he's hardly my first choice. He's a modern interpreter..

    • @jonathanbein5559
      @jonathanbein5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He was well past his prime by the 90's. I think his range extends far beyond Prokofiev, but to each his own.

    • @magbag70
      @magbag70 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sure, his range is very wide as for all the great pianists, but He didn't write the history of interpretation for Bach, for example, even if his Bach is very good. Gould did it. Same for Chopin, i woulnd't say Richter made the history of Chopin interpretation but I'd say that for the Mazurkas or the Barcarole by Horowitz or for the Ballades and Preludes by Cortot. On the other hand I'd say Richter Prokofiev is legendary .. I see Richter as a modern interpreter who tries to stay too strict on the score and the tempo constraining himslef most of the time (this is very common in today pianism but was not like that in the past). I believe He often underachieved (given his potential) due to an overdose of intellectual constriction: it doesn't surpise me that he was hardly satisfied with his recordings. Arrau's is another great pianist that sometime get stuck in a 'intellectual trap' like for his Mozart. Just free thoughts from 30 years of piano music listening. Of course everyone is entitled to his opinion :)
      Back to the concert I attended in the 90s i believe He played Mozart, something else i don't remember, and a Hindemith Ragtime... Well, The Hindemith was the piece that impressed me while i don't even remeber the rest of the program... He has really some special power for modern repertoire.

      Thank you ALL for commenting on my humble observation. For me, the "aha" moment to understand Richter's uniqueness was the first movement of Schubert's sonata D.894 (th-cam.com/video/E7_OW2__ZR0/w-d-xo.html). It is a very profound interpretation and completely unique. Please, compare with other genius piano interpretations to feel the difference. Listen to the tempo and phrasing of the first couple of bars. If there was a Nobel prize for music, this interpretation should have won it. The lyricism of Richter's interpretation for me is quite moving. Of course, personal interpretations and differences in preferences make classical music so great and thriving after centuries of playing the same works over and over again. By the way, Richter admitted in an interview about his special connection with Schuber's music and specifically this sonata (look from 15:10 onward in th-cam.com/video/iVhxqEN9j7k/w-d-xo.html). Therefore, I assume it could be a quintessential example of his mastery.

    Usually I don't listen to Händel. I love Richter. The combination Richter and Händel is unexpected and I couldn't believe that Richter bother to spend time on this but I'm so glad he did. This recording means lots to me, it brings calm, comfort, lust for life and a feeling that things don't have to be complicated and one of a kind to be beautiful, sometimes you wake up, open your eyes, it's sunshine, it must be spring because I hear lots of birds, it's as simple as that and Richter together with Händel put a precise finger on that.

      @@franr.3691 I suggest you read my comment to A.K above as an answer to your own input coloured in your special way. Sometimes you have to read between the lines and understand what is trying to be expressed. About Bach, if I'm a fan as you choose to express it. Of course I listen to Bach sometimes, some of it is impossible not to respect, admire and love, but generally speaking, he's actually not my cup of tea. My emphasis in classical music is more modern, late romantic era to the postmodern. Works I also love, written during the romantic era, as two examples, are the grosse fuge by Beethoven and Liszt's famous work in b minor, works very far from both Bach and Beethoven. But I dearly respect a good craftmanship, if I can express it like that, never mind what era, and composer, and a superb performance fills the sails fully.

    I love this wonderful amazing music!
    What a gems these keyboard suites of Handel! But it is due to the unique qualities of the MAESTRO Sviatoslav Richter that they go straight to your heart. He is able like no one else to play like a poet or a painter, whereas a lot of other players play more technical and mechanical. With Richter even Bach becomes a pleasure to listen to.
    You can see the master in action thanks
    to an upload of Ola Lokken. It is the 5th part of the Suite no 3.

    Please consider adding an "English" (per google) version of L Gerber's comments above:
    It was at first an indecisive, mysterious presence, whose recordings of mediocre sound from Russia were only vaguely recorded. But as his recordings accumulated, including a dazzling Schumann disc from Prague and a titanic version of Mussorgsky's '' Paintings of an Exhibition '' in Sofia, the obvious became obvious and the fans of piano soon convinced the West that Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) was one of the great pianists of his time or of any era. This perception became a certainty hardly had Richter started to occur outside the Soviet bloc, with a series of concerts in the United States in 1960. For those who could attend, it was a revelation. At his death, Richter left behind a considerable discography. No doubt he was the pianist with the most extensive repertoire. He greatly preferred live performances to studio recordings, and many of his best engravings were made in concert. The 1979 Tours Festival was one of Richter's most remarkable projects, a typical example of his relentless exploration of the keyboard repertoire. Richter and pianist Andrei Gavrilov collaborated on an integral Handel website. A video of these concerts shows the pianists turning each other's pages .. Leslie Gerber

    These splendid suites for keyboard were written two or three decades before those by Bach. Why are they less known? Perhaps England was too far away from continental Europe? After all, Handel was hidden there until the Elector of Saxony (Handel former employer) came to the British Islands as King George! The story goes that Handel was terrified and to recover the new King's favor composed the Water Music and the Fireworks suite. The keyboard suites are certainly masterworks. They deserve being better known. This Sviatoslav Richter splendid rendering was a deserved homage.
