I'd like to add that the obesity is just an outward marker of the history of their high carb high sugar consumption, which likely caused a B1 deficiency. As the author Dr Osborne quoted (Dr Derrick Lonsdale) put it, obesity is "high calorie malnutrition" most often from high processed carb intake.

Parenteral nutrition with vitamins is not common practice in many resource-limited settings. If you have a loved one in a hospital ask your doctor to add a Thiamine supplement. I did this with my mom and it was a life saving decision. A Thiamine deficiency can lead to Disautonomia, a condition where the Autonomic Nervous system can no longer regulate itself with potentially devastating consequences. Nutrition should always be a part of any kind of medical treatments. Most medical treatments deplete the body’s reserves of essential vitamins and minerals.
So true! It's an epidemic "Hiding in plain sight". Sepsis, lactic acidosis, dysautonomia, neuropathy, lesions on the spinal cord mimicking MS, it mimicks dementia too, causes edema & heart failure, gastroparesis, nystagmus & ophthalmoplegia or myopathy (eye muscle tracking problems)... you name it!!
People undergoing refeeding syndrome while recovering from anorexia or cachexia are also under particular risk for Thiamine deficiency. Some predict that up to 6% of the population are affected by anorexia or bulimia.
I got a B1 deficiency from exposure to mold. It apparently chews through your B1, and I was likely low in B1 before exposure. It caused or contributed to extreme exercise fatigue and intolerance, neurological pain in my chest that mimics a heart attack, peripheral neuropathy (minor), breathing problems, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, constipation, IBS, stress intolerance, shingles infection (recurring), low stomach acid, thyroid issues, food intolerances and new allergies, pains in my legs, blueish nails when cold etc... I've also been skinny most of my adult life, despite eating like 3 times as much as my fat family members, and I learned B1 can be involved.. So I think I may have been low in B1 for a long time now. Currently supplementing with it and if I am exposed to mold and I get winded for days my recovery is much faster.
I suspected B1 deficiency with many of the same symptoms you described. For several months now I take 600mg BENFOTIAMINE daily. Not all but several of the symptoms have resolved.

I think this is all necessary to return health. Also avoiding the obvious bad foods, and making sure you're not exposed to mold. The mold I was exposed to was in my car underneath the carpet from a juice spill several years ago.

I just ordered some TTFD and will try that as it is moreso used for the central nervous system. Copper is also depleted from mold which is one reason why mold can cause rapid hair greying. I am also doing milk thistle and choline for liver protection/support. Choline is also heavily involved in the vagus nerve, it builds acetylcholine. People report (strangely enough) that the nicotine patch of all things fixed their long covid symptoms in a week, and I read it is like 30 times stronger than acetylcholine and binds to the same receptors as acetylcholine does, protecting the body from whatever covid infects you with. I don’t take any medication and I get abused by the receptionist of the doctors office. All I wanted was to have a blood test so I can continue driving Im 75 yrs old. Hence I don’t go to doctors
I have a high carb, high protein and high fat diet. My metabolism is still high in my 40s as an endurance athlete. What is the consensus in that? Should I still supplement with which B1 family? I currently take Benfothiamine. Thanks
As much as I love exercise as a physical therapist, I also recognize how damaging repeated mega-doses of it is on the body. You deplete micronutrients and the severe strain is risky. I know you're not looking to stop, but chronic marathon level exercise is rarely a good thing, if that's what you're doing thinking it's the ultimate health improvement

( and their dosage of vitamin D is too low for my fibromyalgia relief)
Just curious what your 25OH-D is now? And did it resolve your fibro? A couple studies point to a vast majority of fibro having some degree of insulin resistance/ glucose abnormality

I don’t know but I do know that the true health promoting gut bacteria cannot be grown outside of the body because they die quickly when exposed to oxygen. What you can do though is feed the beneficial bacteria what they need. Prebiotics. Get a variety. Inulin, corn bran, rice bran or wheat bran, resistant starches like in green banana, cold cooked potatoes or Rob’s Red Mill Potato Starch and pectin like in apples or carrots. Good healthy gut bacteria will keep opportunistic pathogenic bacteria under control. Stay away from antibiotics and protein pump inhibitor medications if at all possible.

I've tested 30 pts serum Thiamine over the past 2 years. 25 low. Vitamin C.... all 30 < 5 in the serum.
