- In an exclusive interview, CIA director William Burns told "Face the Nation" that his meeting three months ago with Russian spy chief Sergey Naryshkin was "pretty dispiriting." "There was a very defiant attitude on the part of Mr. Naryshkin as well. A sense of cockiness and hubris," Burns said.

Wonderful interview. One of the clearest and cleanest question and answer sessions I've seen in ages. Where it fails is in limiting the time, which to be fair, is where most broadcast networks fail. As consumers, we would appreciate the experience of all the questions she has and what information he has to give us, the American people, in response.

It absolutely did. Putin saw the games Trump was playing trying to withhold funding from Ukraine. Not to mention all the calls to leave NATO. Burns is quote right that puncturing hubris is essential. But not only Putin's. It is the majority culture of the entire population that needs this hubris punctured. Just like Japan and Germany had hubris based on ideas of ubermensch and such ideas, Russians in general have ideas of the russian state as an uberstate. So they need to be provided a stinging russian defeat in order to reset the culture from this agressive attitude.
It is worse than hubris. it is deep insecurity. Putin knows that the Ukrainians are more clever than the Russians. Every time Putin is forced to witness that Ukrainian brilliance, the more desperately he wants to have it.

I think Russia does have a cultural issue at the root of the problem, but I don’t feel that’s it’s ethno nationalist in the way those countries were. It would be impossible to sell that in Russia as it’s too diverse to support that kind of thing.
IMO it’s a culture that’s obsessed with appearances to the point it prevents meaningful self reflection. There is mention of it in the show “Chernobyl”.

You can tell this dude is highly intelligent from his speaking. Probably perfect chief to have overseeing things. Putin will not win the war. Best bet is for him to withdrawal his troops and try to survive himself.
The sad and scary truth is putin knows he can't win and knows the second he withdraws from the war, an entire community of professional assassins will be hunting him down.

It is absurd for the U.S. to continue supplying arms to Ukraine while, at the same time, to threaten China about supplying arms to Russia. What would the U.S. do to China? What would the "serious consequences" be for China? U.S. sanctions? At a point it would be the U.S. that is isolating by applying sanctions to so many countries. The European Union cannot afford the sanction China because it is already suffering serious economic decline.
Now that is what a liar sounds like. Almost ever word is a dishonest manipulation.

Director Burns is ver competent and make me feel good about his leadership and the work of the CIA.
It shouldn't have to be said, but nevertheless I'll say it. This is how a responsible government official acts, and this is how a responsible journalist acts. The intelligence and having the facts at their fingertips of the two is self evident. But just as important, both are able to get their points across civilly and respectfully, without bellicosity or confrontation.
