50% fitness 50% mental determination. If you want it enough you will do it.
Its one thing being a gym queen bashing out press ups and pull ups in front of a mirror in a warm gym.Being able to keep running when your body is screaming, that's what its all about.
Very well said, I admire the physical fitness of RM and Paras soldiers, but their mentality is what makes them respectful.
I think it is 100% fitness 100% mental determination and more.
it is meant to push you beyond your capabilities
Feeling the burn but you get better over time lol
50% isn't enough. Always 100% of everything
I think we're very lucky here in the UK to have two of the fittest non-special forces units in the world: the Parachute Regiment & the Royal Marines. Both have extremely high levels of fitness & that is shown by their ability to operate in very tough & arduous conditions anywhere in the world. Not many countries have this.
They are only non-special forces in the eyes of the British Military which to be honest is a total waste.
They are highly elite and super tough specialists who can do jobs only they can do.
sim wete not even America have this...
The Paras are part of UKSF group so they are recognised as a special forces regiment.

@@mattrowlands5751 proud to say Im an American who is 57% British. Most of the 57% is Scottish & English. Im a former United States Marine and my father (80% British) was a US Army Paratrooper during the Normandy Invasion. Proud to call my son a para 👍🏻

I was at Catterick doing my TSC INF and saw these nutters doing PT sessions, they are absolute machines, and they were only the recruits - anybody who gets into P Coy deserves the ultimate respect as they have to be the real best of the best, fair do's lads!
As a former Bootneck that’s also completed P coy , respect . It’s the mindset that makes the difference
I wish someone made a documentary on the Paras selection start to finish. I am really interested in knowing the ins and outs of P company and just general training.
"The Paras" (1982), Cutting Edge documentary about P Coy (circa 1990) and "Para Platoon" (2015?). What more could you want?
ITV did this year
Paras Men Of War is on YT as well, 3 episodes which Is a good insight.
I saw this video a couple of weeks ago and took one thing from that really got me motivated, the quote "The most difficult thing is putting on your trainers and getting through the door". 18 months ago my lungs almost gave up due to a severe case of pleurisy, I was on steroids to keep my lungs going, my weight and size rocketed. After watching this video, I got my trainers on and got training, lost just under a stone so far, pulse rate is better, my recovery rate is way better than before. Ta
Well done mate good for you.
Dad won his beret and wings via P Company in 1963.Served in 1 Para based at Arnhem barracks in Aldershot,Hants till 1974.
Younger brother earned his set in 1991 serving in 216 signals.
Dad told me stories of his training....
Absolute murder !!!!
The mindset it gave him when he left to lead a civilian life later on in 1983....people use to remark that dad had a tough/hard presence about him.He did and had this drive about him that moved mountains !!!!
He credits the Paras for pushing him beyond the edge......
Utrinque paratus...Ready for anything !!!!
adding to my first comments. I continued training as lost 2 stone. I am a firefighter and I was close to losing my job. I entered the World Firefighters Games in Sydney in October and took part in the Toughest Firefighter Alive event. I came 8th in the world in the over 45 yrs group and won a gold medal in the over 40's Toughest Firefighter Relay. Get those trainers on and tell yourself that you can do it. The illness was overcome and I'm back to my old fitness levels again. Cheers
After watching this (at 2.30am!) I do feel inspired to do better. Currently I'm running sub 1.30 half marathons but I honestly believe I can do better, especially with extra weight and for longer distances, from seeing what you can do. Thank You.
This video was of my P-Coy. By far one of my greatest achievements.
Respect to all soldiers not matter the country. (US army soldier )
been there done. done that... recommend it to anyone who has the balls.... Airborne!!!! my beret's off to all those who are serving now (hats included :-). )
15 yrs 1 PARA Best Times of my Life
its all mental.before i did it ,it was hard in the run up to passing out. then after that a ten miler was a walk in the park.i was only 7 and a half stone(just over 100pounds )when i joined nobody thought i woulda made it but i did cos i had it all in the mind. wanted to prove myself for my father.i loved it when all the arnold swarzenigger keep fit kinda guys failed thinking they were the be all and end all;.i smoked ,i drank.but hey thats life i just got on with it back to work the next day.some of the marines who did p.company with me failed.good bunch of guys though. i mite have failed the marine course. coulda been just a bad day.were only human.brothers in arms. we need each other so no more shite about whos better than who.
Wow man that actually sounds pretty amazing! I was thinking that I was bad because I'm only nine stone! I'm also thinking about joining early next year, the only problem being that I live in the republic of Ireland and to some more immature people doing so might be "frowned upon". But I'm committed to joining none the less! Any advice on what would be important early on, cardio or physical muscle?
first of all do not give a shit what others think of u .thats a weakness. just go for it and get the head down get stuck in . a little tip for u get a peice of music in your head , it mite be your national anthem or your mothers fav song . the 1 that did it for me was ... onward christian soldiers just because we had a padre doing our course with us and i beleive that worked for me.most of it is mental .good luck pal.
Andrew Kyler good luck man.
I am from the Republic too.
Relationship between Ireland and the UK are great.
The only people who criticise you will be the guys to lazy to work and have nothing better to do than be a keyboard warrior and make our country look bad :)
Andrew Kyler Do cardio..... your preliminary goals are to get a good 1.5 mile time, sub 9 minutes to impress if you're looking to join airbourne forces.
hi guys do you think a man of 31 could make it in the paras or the marines its someing iv been thinking about for ever but never did it but now im getting on and i need to do someing new.
The truth in what he says is in committing yourself. Until you have made your mind up to do something, anything at all, you will never achieve it. Once you have decided to do it, you are 99% there. This applies to anything. It doesn’t have to be physical fitness at the level of the parachute regiment. It could be as simple as committing to run 5K a day, every day, no matter what. The first thing is start. The second thing is - finish. Starting is the hardest task. I truly believe this.
I passed PCoy aged 35 leaving guys 15 years younger in my wake. I'm 46 now and wouldn't have a chance! It's tough but acheivable if you prepare properly. With the right mentality and belief you can achieve anything.
God bless all the soilders fighting for our country 🙏🏻❤️ I have a lot of respect for u

Must be a power job to do well done my grandad was young major in the English army and the only one to live his story sorry to be forward but I am looking for a wonderful guy like my grandad to share my life with I love the outdoors thank you
Holy moly.....this looks harder than American airborne training! I could be wrong, though. Much respect to our British allies.
Of course it's tougher
It is harder. A lot harder. It's one of the toughest Military Training Schemes in the world. Overtaken only by British Commando Training and British SAS Training. Perhaps US Navy SEAL Training too.
Maggot2607 no way is royal marines commando training harder than depot para
Well, the Marines training is longer...That was my view on it. Plus I was recently watching a series on Channel 4 about Commando training in Limpston and the officers and narrators said it was the most grueling training in the Army aside from Special Forces such as SAS, SBS, UKSF, etc..
Maggot2607 is it if you include the jumps course it's the same and longer doesnt mean harder and that programme was very cringe worthy and embarrassing
Wow, Para's really don't mess around. Major respect to you guys.
Good documentary boss. You have come a long way since St Georges quay and us briefing top brass on Napoleon in Afghan 😂
Brilliant................ thank you so much for posting this
I passed p coy in 89 I was born in August 8th 72 so you do the maths.. my name is Adrian pickard the lads called me Yorkie..the point of my writing is this.. I think it was 93 I'd come back with one 1 para after our long tour of Ireland I was on leave and a married man so I stayed in Aldershot . I went for a run the paras ten our ten miler ... Hungry hill flagstaff long valley. The training ground was deserted it was a cold day ice on the ground, during the run I felt a real sense of peace I was beating myself but enjoying it ! I loved that training area forever after that.. The regiment had Given me the knowledge to physical excellence in that moment it was all worth while..the paras look beyond and it's worth the effort.. Yorkie pickard 1para 89 02...
Update: The Paras - Men of War, Thursday, Jan 10, ITV 9:00pm English time - a three part doc' . First new doc' on the regiment for 35 years! Utrinque Paratus!
@MarkramUK
Agree, RM Commando's & Airborne Forces are of a similar standard but different role , did this myself back in 1990 , but will always rate Commando trained troops very highly !!
Thanks for adding the links into the description, going to purchase this book.
Changed a lot since the late 70s the staff were aggressive beating the shit out the recruits
Looking forward to working next to these guys oneday when i pass out of Royal Marines Recruit Training soon!!
Not into the whos best or what ever! Both got pro's and cons but the RM was for me
2 years then ima para! Applied an past medical and fitness just the wit till the course now!!!! :)
Watched this video, shoved on my trainers and ran a couple miles. Good deed done for the day!
Proud to have served respect my brothers
Gets me so pumped im waiting for ADSC joining the infantry cant wait

Good luck Badioactive Bacon, respect all of you guys who want to join this and i take my hat of to you. I want to be a Royal Marines Commando hopefully signing up in october!
good luck for october, iv just signed up for the paras few months ago, got my interview on 4th of june and then get a date for selection but anyways good luck :)
well there goes every hope I ever had if joining the paras thank you for breaking all false hope I ever had
Add what he said to everyday life, and you most certainly can't go wrong, the momentum and will, will get you there 👌
Best piece of advice I've heard in a long time it really is the hardest part, once you're out the door it's easy :)
what you meab i wont pass medical. i grave dig by hand for 10 years also hit the gym three times a week. just wanted a few tips to improve more just dont wanna fail anything
if you can't do chin ups, then how are you going to pull your own body weight say over obstacles on the assault course etc
thats what happens here in australia if you join the sasr you drop back to a private my bearly seen cousin was telling us some of the trainning you do and the rank drop is part of it, like starting a fresh
I joined the royal marines but got injured during training.
I'm thinking if i should join the para's in a year.
Well said Sir, carry on with that attitude, and could be a Royal Marines Officer :) RM2850
+Old Marine You were in the royal marine artillery were you not sir.
+Simon Calvert Excellent banter, I have total respect for my Para Oppos, and I have a few.
Would love to one day earn that maroon beret and the enter the brotherhood. Massive appreciation for everyone serving right now. Time to get the trainers on and start working on it..
If you see this how’s your career going mate ?
@TheZodiacKiller622
the only problem I heard was that you have to make your own living arrangments for a period of time...not sure how to go about that.
@SidESKiT not entirely correct you can be posted straight to 1 Para after passing out of depot
@charlietangossss it's done over a week starts wed - 10 miler and trainasium, thurs - log race and steeplecahse, fri - 2 miler and milling, weekend off, mon 20 miler, tues - stretcher race
I’m planning on joining Paras when I leave school I’m 14 now and still got two years left of school if i joined at 16 how would I do P company training at Army College ? Or would i just do it straight away I’m still trying to figure out how it works any help would be appreciated.
At AFC Harrogate you do a year of Phase 1 before going to Catterick for a few months for Phase 2 training and P Company. You have to be 18 to actually get to unit 👍 If you want to be an officer you need A Levels however if you don't Harrogate's a great shout.
edit: 49 weeks at Harrogate then 14 at Catterick doing P Coy etc then 3 weeks jumps course
@@jesseblack5812 thanks mate this has helped me out a ton .
@@qcity6417 good luck mate, check out the Junior Soldier para requirements but be prepared to smash em because the Paras are very oversubscribed and can afford to take the best of the best. You've got bags of time tho mate, best of luck!!

@@jesseblack5812Hi mate it’s me on a new account just thought I’d let you know that I’ve got my assessment date coming up for junior para at Harrogate and thank you I listened to your advice n I’ll easily smash the testing requirements.
I did the TVSB course and Passed with Flying Colours!!!
I've heard that the 'Tickling Very Saggy Balls' course is a toughie.
Good to hear you're really good at it, your mates on Battalion will appreciate your skillful fingers.
Watching this to learn some fitness, so you do all this in a day? I do my weights im thinking do lighter weight but more volume i want to be leaner.
@thebigfudge85 There also exist variations of it across the Commonwealth.
really? why not? I was thinking about buying this book to help me prepare for RASP(Selection training for an assignment to the U.S. Army 75th Ranger Regiment).
because its more of just a basic fitness guide rather than a para fitness guide, and while sam was the p coy oc and is very very fit, he only seen the finished article with recruits who were attempting p coy, he never seem them at the beginning of training
To me, there aren't words to describe how well narrated this video is. Because, like the Major alludes to, if u wanna b everything u can b, then look further than P company. And even when it's over, and u leave/retire from the army, u can carry on helping anyone & everything. I'm honored to have known, and associated with, Paras.
when i was looking at joining they said you could apply for a transfer from australian army or air force or navy(where i am) to the uk army, air force or navy but depends on numbers and deployments
@Steve06669 Dont see the time change as an excuse to be happy where you are fitness wise. Prac is not a walk in the park for someone with a decent run time at adsc
I want to join got two years to get fit
Joe Evans end up joining mate?
Did you join Joe ..
@GunneryisFunnery
getting across the pond isnt the problem. It the requirment to live in the UK for 2 years. Dont know where I could stay though...thats the problem.
I’ve got his book. It’s VERY good
Apply this attitude to life, inspirational!!
Thanks man your a legend i'll try my hardest!
I notice the little joke (the scaffolding clips) are missing on the parallel bars... (2:16) . Elf and Safety innit? I remember Sgt Williams doing a handstand on them (summer 1974 -ish It was the year where there was a helicopter crash at the airshow.....and the SR71 did a display) - it was really windy at the time. That guy had what it took. I note the comments about P Coy being brutal. One lad (Gunner Reid ) was on his 13th (yes thirteenth) P Coy while I was there. Wonder if anyone here remembers him - and Captain Paddy Hoone ?
Fucking awesome can't wait! I'm at the very early stages of my application process for the Para's but I've previously been on an insight course at Catterick Garrision and I loved every minute of it, particularly the steeple chase! Enjoyed the video, cheers!
Did you join mate
@SamiDan09 The PTI's and staff at depot will physically and metally get you ready for P Company. Good luck and keep on in there.
@TheAirbornePainTrain no sideskit is correct
I'm waiting to hear from you guys
@SamiDan09
probs what you already know: run up hills, gradually stick weight on your back, and just do it for at least an hour.. nevermind running through all of it, because the hills will fuck you up, but keep marching if you have to slow down. then build up time and then weight eventually. btw im not a para, but im joinin the RE and hope to be in 23 eng regt. which is airborne. its worked for me, my 1.5 mile time went down by 30 seconds in about 2 months since i slung weight on me back ;)
i worked with these guys when i was with the reme, they
are the real shit.
Was in regiment from 1992 2010
Talk to a PTI at harrogate and get him to give you some tips. I'm in the para's and i wouldn't of described myself as super fit when i got to depot. The fitness is progressive and as long as your fit enough to get there and put in the effort while there you should be able to get through.
@FriTTzProductions well seeing as i was one of the Para Reg PTI's at Depot Para up until last year i think i should know where the joes get posted to
@SooSneeky erm not anymore they dont they pass out of training then go to brize norton once at battalion
iam 16 years old iam currently in A levels once im 18 and have finished my exams im going to join the paras. i have wanted to be a member of an elite force for most of my life i was thinking about the royal marines but i love the idea of being a para in my eyes they are better then the marines. im not saying marines arnt good i just prefer the paras. i have started getting fit now so that i might have a slight advantage when i go to join up. if there is any advise you can give me please do.
Im doing a para course in Canada, it's pretty intense
god bless them all.
Holy shit mad respect for them and their training.
Yes.
Rugby 08 music playing gives me nostalgia
@TheZodiacKiller622 I from Ireland aswell man..I was wondering if i want to join do i have to get a citizeinship?
Im 15 and not very fit but its my dream to be a paratrooper. Every night I do a few push ups and sit ups then I go for a 1.5 mile run. If you want it enough you'll get it :)
xfatsx1991 You'd have to do more than that. In training at some points they do 10 mile runs every day. Literally every day for weeks leading to P Coy.
would love to see a USA airborne soldier try this fitness test
@blackcoffee17 4 PARA is the reserve section of the parachute regiment and it is made up of volunteers who are fully trained parachute soldiers. When you first join you will go into either 2 or 3 PARA and will serve 2 years in with either of them, after 2 years in 2 or 3 PARA you will go into 1 PARA which forms part of the Special Forces Support Group providing infantry support to the SAS and others and in 1 PARA you will receive further training on additional weapons and skills.
have got medical coming up for paras really worried bout my fitness could you lot help me out plz thanks
@ollie272 eh? all Parachute Regiment capbadge personel have ther wings, you'll be getting mixed up wi the attached arms.
if that were an option I would be packing for the UK now...
but nope, pretty much on your own. I really dont get how others: Fijian,Kiwis,Aussies manage to get into HM forces, it almost seems like you need to have relatives to stay with in the UK while they process you.
I think that we are very lucky to have such an amazing most elite fighting forces the parachute regiment the Royal marines and the sas and the sbs also known as the the speshial boat service
@khug1990 Don't know if that is true. But he was the "I know everything officer" out in Macedonia who drank from an unreliable water source (basics Sam) and went down with Diarrhea & Vomiting (D&V), which then spread like wildfire through the Peanut Factory where we were staying. As Paul Daniels say "Not alot of people know that". We do have a saying in the para's, Mong Fitness. Which Sam has plenty of that, that I can assure you. pmsl.
do you know anything about the roles of a parachute engineer?
If u fail the course can u go back for retraining?
Great post. What's the music at 3:34? Cheers!
Not sure I would ring the careers office and ask them for some insight into that. I;m sure you won't have a problem though as they'll give you enough food in training.
Normal infantry course is all ready hard enough. P company is brutal
Can any para tell me how much hours of PT and exercise you do per day in the Para?
I mean is it actually a lot of fitness or just a couple of hours a day and the other time your are doing drilling , ironing and classes?
Just asking, as I joined the Reserves thinking i was going to have a blast, then realize i was spending my days ironing uniforms at home. Before anyone say, I respect anyone who passed para or Royal marine , however at 30 my life does not allow me to do that anymore. So I was thinking of joining para 4 ... but cant be bothered with the ironing or the drilling. (that is not why i would join) any light on the amount of PT and exercise would be good.
And finally, there is a club in the army called 300.. not that I cared much about it , but apparently you need to be quite fit to get in. did that in my first test ( and for people who doesnt know means 70 press ups (a lot of you can do this) 72 sit ups ( a lot of you can do this) 8.30 to run 1.5 miles (hardly anyone here can do this)
what about the pacer test????
Grungy 3 all the way 👍🏻
@alikos88 If you're asking can you join, yes you can I'm Irish and I got an interview for these next month funny enough in the british army infantry dvd one of the guys being interviewed is from Canada.
You're talking out of your arse mate. I was 509 platoon (1985) and we were the last recruit company to do it all in the shot. 510 did some of their's in Wales, but to my knowledge we were the last in the shot.
@TheGunner1324 i did go cadets a while back. and thanks for the advise man.
You guys are really motivating! My Learncliki fitness instructor told me I had it easy compared to you guys so had to check it out! So now I get it :)
