I sometimes get my basil developing woody stems in response to stress, which is generally considered a bad sign. One thing I discovered though is that basil cuttings root more quickly if the stem is already woody, because that part of the stem is more mature. So if your basil goes woody, you can use this to your advantage during propagation.
Wow thats interesting! Im gonna try this out. I always avoid trying to root the parts that become woody and only take green stem cuttings, because plants in general root more easily from younger stems
This was very helpful! I had a feeling I should pinch the top bunch of baby leaves off of my new basil plant. I am a total novice. I finally took some time to find this info so that I can go out and do my basil caretaking, aaaaaand now a wasp is right outside the patio door...
In my 30s and just discovered basil a few months ago. I totally get wanting that giant tower of basil :P
I'm addicted to it and its kinda pricey fresh so hopefully I have some luck with it this year.
Thanks for the info Scott. Good info to grow plants with similar care needs together. Yummy!
My very favorite plant to grow, Thai basil! Grow it for the smell!
Thanks Gardener Scott for the Great Basil Growing Tips. Love the GreenStalk "Tower of Basil" Looks fantastic. This is Another Great gardening TH-cam video added to your already incredible collection...
Scott, thank you for all your great information. Have really enjoyed all your hard work. You just informed me that my potted basil probably needs to move to more sun! Whenever you post your new video I grab a cup of coffee and the puppy and we plop down to watch. Callie loves to watch for your dog photo bombing you, unfortunately not often enough. Doggie needs more screen time! :) Thanks again. Cheers from North Idaho!
Can’t wait for more fabulous basil recipe idea videos
Great video on basil! I cannot imagine my garden without it.
I've seen lots of bees enjoying my Basil flowers. Other Pollinators love them as well.
Holy cow: that's a LOT of basil! I direct-sowed my basil this year (dictated by circumstances) and had somewhat meager results. I probably sowed them a few weeks too early, as well. Hopefully I'll have my seed station put back together by next spring.
Hey Scott it’s Scott. Love the video! Now just send me the Pesto recipe. Lol
Yum, love basil. It’s struggled here, too hot. Had to shade. Yours look wonderful!
Thanks Scott. I thank you too, of your wonderful word articulation, with such a clear and distinct sound in your speech. For me who I live in Ellas (Greece) I can learn all the great stuff you provide, without missing a word, Not being a good speaker of American myself, I just enjoy hearing you.
Thank you for this information. I started all my herbs from seeds. I did the same with my different types of basil & tomatoes together. Basil and peppers together, I didnt know that I could, nice to know. Greenstalk tower is on my wish list since the first time you did a review on it.
Have a Blessed Day!!
Wow! So much basil! I love basil and a good pesto. Intrigued now about basil jam. I'll be looking into that. Thanks so much!
Hmmm... Basil jelly? You will have to tell us about that one!
Scott, I've been researching how to grow hurbs with some success, and a lot of dissapointment. A lot of videos out there don't get quiet detailed enough to help. You on the other hand, included all the info to give me a decent shot at it, THANK YOU. ;-)
Yes! Thank you! I’ve been having trouble with my basil.
Can you do a cilantro video next? I can’t seem to get mine to cooperate ever.
I'm planning videos on different plants and cilantro is one. I do have a video on collecting cilantro seeds: th-cam.com/video/U4do1dewpvQ/w-d-xo.html
too much nice details Thank you!
learned a lot with this - thank you
Thanks for the video I like sweet Italian basils with Vietnamese Pho (noodle soup) !!!!!
Great information
Got it! Thanks!!!
I have not been very successful saving basil seeds, any tips?
Another fully informed video. Stay Well!!!
Letting the flowers grow and leaving them until the seeds dry is easier in summer. I'm hoping to show saving basil seeds in a future video.
@@GardenerScott Looking forward to the video.
Another question if you have time. I found a huge yellow Boston pickling cucumber, hidden below the trellis. Should I ferment the seeds as I do with tomatoes?
Stay Well!!!
They do best with a few days of fermentation.
@@GardenerScott Thanks!!!
Growing seeeds in the gardens
Don't skip basil lemonade! It's wonderful.
Basil is not difficult. It's beside my tomatoes, okra, maybe some in with bush beans. A few, 6, for me and some for pollinators. Basil is beesness
Thanks for the information.
I had 30 plants all over my garden and they are developing, what looks like a bacterial disease similar to that tomatoes get. I'm in zone 5b, is it too late to save them?
And what can I do to prevent it next year?
Grow them in a covered bed?
Try to identify the specific disease for best action. Depending on what it is, pruning off affected leaves is often enough. If it's in the soil, planting in a different bed next year will be necessary.
I have one more question., I keep all my seeds in plastic containers and I keep it in my shed during the summer months. Is this too hot or a mistake
It could be too hot. Cool conditions are better.
I have been doing and learning about plants. For, the past two years, I have been a failure. This very sumer, I tried again at the beginning it looked like it was going to be another failure. But, something in my guts tell me to let the plants be and got two peppers. So, in the middle of May, I started 4 pepper seeds and 4 tomato seeds. Only one of each survived. The pepper plant was growing a bit slow. The tomato plant was doing well. I was tempted to kill the pepper plant but decide to let be. As soon, as the heatwave came, I noticed the pepper plant sorta growing and suddenly it started to take off. Then, it stopped, It took a week a half to start growing again.Because, I kept a sharp eye on it. What was the problem? The pepper plant was splitting in half. Now I got two in one plant. Ok. Then, the plant started to give flowers and flowers. This pepper plant is producing peppers that I never seen before. And the tomatoes. Every node produced three and 4 tomatoes. I grew the seeds out in the sun as soon as they germinated. Perhaps, that was beneficial for the plants. I grow them in pots. I forgot about the basil. I have falling in love with the basil plant. Don't know why?
Becoming a gardener involves a lot of patience, many mistakes, and then a discovery that you like it all.
No linked videos showed up here...🤔
What to do with all the extra basil?
I make pesto and freeze it.
For some reason I am having trouble growing my basil and herbs the last two seasons. I tried growing three different ways, by seeds, one indoor in spring, second way directly in the soil at the end of May and the three way in a flower pot. None of them grew, why ?
It could be the quality of your soil, the amount of sun, or how often you water.
@@GardenerScott I used starting soil , and potting to plant in flower pots and directly into my garden soil. But all three did not grow, I did the same with parsley and sage. All my other plants grew good. I not sure if it’s bad seeds
You say "Bay sill", I say "Baz ill" 🙂
Which vídeos Scott? No videos
They're there. I don't know why you didn't see them.
Now can we get a video on how to train your wife to stop buying herbs at the store and use the ones in the garden?? 😂 my wife is forever buying herbs that I have giant bushes of in the garden LOL
Easy fix! Whatever she cooks for dinner, go buy some takeout of! l
Love the basil tower!! I love growing basil but once the Japanese Beatles find my plants it’s lights out for the plants. 🥲
