    About the only thing I buy on DVD these days are older TV shows which most likely will NEVER get released on an upgraded format, due to the Blu-ray or 4K wouldn't be a noticeable improvement, like shows from the 70's/80's/90's which were originally recorded on standard definition videotape. Also buy some older shows shot on film on DVD, like "Gunsmoke" and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", since I'm fairly certain those will never get an upgraded release either.

    The problem with streaming is you will be watching content at a lower bit-rate even in areas with fast internet, even if you "purchase" a movie or show digitally you don't truly own your copy and it can be taken away at any time, as we have seen with content on playstation recently due to licensing issues. I stick to DVDs and Blu-rays due to not having a 4k player, and to be honest buying a 4k player isn't on my list of priorities at the moment with the general cost of living being so high currently.

    Love the look of 4k when done right, but due to freezing up issues, I no longer buy 4k unless it includes a blu-ray. Modern dvds are alright, but I don't buy them unless it was only released on dvd. A lot of my older dvds just look awful on a 4k tv.

    Seriously DVD is the most influential and i would say best home video format and the nostalgia for it is strong in me. Also DVDs had the best menues so far and also wonderful editions. I still buy and watch DVDs all the time.
    Lord of the Rings extended editions and Alien Quadrilogy are the best home media editions of all time.

    I think I'll always be a 4K loyalist but you make some good points here. Especially if there's a lot you want to collect and you're on a budget. At the moment due to my living situation I rip my 4K media and stream them on PLEX, and don't usually come across 4K issues, but when I get my own place with a higher quality setup and switch to using my discs, I might come across finnicky disc readings as well. It's happened to me already, if only twice with used eBay purchases, but never on Blu-Ray and DVD.

    I will never get rid of my old DVDs and keep buying more. Reasons: 1. I want to have my favorite movies without the modern politics-driven edits made to them
    2. I like the original artwork they came with, especially since many 4K releases suck at this aspect.
    3. They might actually have extras that aren't on BD or 4K for some reason.
    4. I have never had playback issues on DVDs, ever, not once! Maybe not with regular Blu-rays either, but 4K, lots of them! 4K is the only format I have received a defective disc from the factory.

    Yeah, I picked up a couple of DVDs just recently. Two horror movies released in 2020 and 2021. Neither have a Bluray or 4K release and probably never will. I do have 1080p downloads of them, but I liked them so much I bought the DVDs anyway as that's all there is.
    I've been all about Bluray for the last 12 or 13 years, and I have a few 4K releases too now, but lots of things don't make it to high definition. Lots of obscure movies, and lots of music videos and documentaries. Live At Pompeii by Pink Floyd hasn't had an HD release. Live After Death by Iron Maiden hasn't had an HD release. So there's definitely still a place for DVD. I prefer Bluray or 4K, but I have no problem watching DVDs and they mostly look pretty damn good on my projector at 130 inch image size.
    Also, while I'm at it, what I don't like about 4k is this need to fuck with the colours. Brighten everything. Darken everything. Make blues blue-er, and reds red-er. I wish they'd just leave them alone. And leave the film grain too

    I think DVDs are cheap on the secondary market and it's really only the really old ones that have issues, additionally like you mentioned Blu-rays are hit and miss even when the Blu Ray looks undamaged. Some of the older movies aren't really meant to be viewed in high res, like the movie Grease where the actors look their ages.

    I watch an anime film every December called The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and the Blu-Ray I have of it began to stutter in certain places over the past couple of years, I'm not sure whether it's due to disk rot or just minor hard-to-see abrasion. I've cleaned it and it still stutters and I've tried it on three different Blu-Ray-playing devices and it stutters in the same places. Fortunately, the release of TDoHS I have was the Bandai Entertainment version that was a triple-disk release that also included the DVD (plus another DVD of bonus features) so I at least have a back-up version to watch that still looks pretty good considering that this is not a cheap Blu-Ray to replace, even the Funimation re-release is out-of-print.

      Exactly! I feel the same. I have a 55” and 77” 4K TV, on my 55” TV DVDs are barely watchable and on my main living room 77” TV forgot it. The trend is toward larger size TVs and I think they’re all 4K now probably 55 inch is one of the smallest or become standard. I’ve got rid of all my DVDs apart from the ones where I couldn’t get replacements on Blu-ray or 4K, Blu-ray.

    I recall DVD not being in sync with the picture (opinions on the movie going back and forth not withstanding) of Attack of the Clones playing in the PS2 around 2004ish. I don’t think that ever happened with Blu Ray in my experience.
    Umm I don’t understand why DVDs are still being sold new. Anything more than 5 bucks for a DVD these days seems ridiculous to me. Unless it’s an old show or something.
    Blu Ray has been around since 2006 and I’ve gotten them used and dirt cheap. Seen Blu Ray players at thrift stores.
    I just don’t see why anyone in particular is getting new realeases on the format.
    I can understand exclusive extras and preferring color grading or whatever. To beat a dead horse with all the 6 Star Wars movies they have had many changes.
    I don’t know I think people can wait to get a BR cheaper rather than buy a DVD. I got a steelbook of Venom Let there be Carnage for the same price on Amazon (because I waited and No Way Home was out at the time) that I saw it at Dollar General. 20 bucks. I don’t want to be a jerk about it but 20 dollars for a DVD these days I consider a rip off.

    When I started updating to blu-ray I became VERY snooty about DVDs. They were dead to me.
    It's not until recently that I have opened up to still buying/keeping DVDs for certain titles.
    I never used to look up blu-ray reviews to see if the transfer was actually worth a shit (I know, I know) and just assumed it was always better than DVD.
    Just as an example, I just re-bought The Phantom Menace on DVD because of the DNR issues on the the blu-ray version making the film look waxy and ugly as shit. So with none of the THREE HD transfers of that film looking good, DVD is good enough for me as it retains the film grain.
    The infamous T2 blu-ray/4K debacle also had me re-buy the old DVD until a proper HD transfer happens (unlikely.)

    Why do some of these 4K discs with Dolby Vision have playback issues on the Panasonic UB820? I can't watch my 4K copies of Jaws, John Wick 3, LOTR EE, and The Matrix trilogy because they start freezing and stop playing. The discs have no dirt or scratches on them. Even my old Samsung UBD-K8500 won't play them properly. I never had such issues with Blu-ray and DVD discs.

    • @CollectorCreations
      @CollectorCreations  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It might be the discs or the player depending on how often the player doesn’t allow a disc to work properly. All the films you suggested I also have 4K discs of and all have worked perfectly on my Panasonic. But this is what I mean when I say that I’ll buy a 4K disc only for it to not work over an hour in to the actual film, or years after I’ve bought it I discover an issue with it. Yet such a thing doesn’t happen with older formats. By the sounds of it it’s just the discs as you said they don’t work on your Samsung either. Best bet is to return them or just buy new ones as cheap as you can and test those out

      @CollectorCreations I find it strange that this problem only occurs with certain 4K discs. Especially when the discs are clean and have no dirt or scratches. The LOTR 4K box set that I was sent from Australia only has the EE not working properly, whereas the theatrical versions play fine without any issues. I wonder if it's because of my HDMI cable as it's only 18Gbps and not 48Gbps.

      @@CollectorCreations The classic Doctor Who Blu-rays are good. They include lots of bonus content and special features, remaster the sound to be in stereo, and often include updated special effects (the updated special effects are optional in the settings). The exception to the stereo sound being the Blu-ray of season 2 which doesn't include it due to it having a much larger episode count than later seasons, but the others do to my knowledge.

    the problem of 4K is films werent supposed to be that sharp, so for some films you can suddenly see all the mistakes, cheap props, matt lines, poorly matching CGI and LOTR trilogy case you can see when the scale doubles are wearing masks.

    • @CollectorCreations

      To be fair most of that you could see on the big cinema screen anyway, but you’d probably be too caught up with what’s happening in the grander picture to notice. A lot of older or lower budget films have that issue where it’s noticeable, like string work and puppets, or bad body doubles and the like but that’s just the magic of cinema

      Fun fact about the LOTR 4K is if you watch the film with the original color grade all the cgi looks better because it was made for that color scheme not what the modern digital reconstruction did to the films colors to match the hobbit films.
      The 4K also removes film grain and has less fine details that the dvd which is hilarious when you realize 4K has HDR but they removed so much fidelity from the image you get those issues in 4K that an ups called dvd doesn’t even have 😂

    I think you have it wrong with 4Ks being broken. While I have seen one 4K that was actually broken (scratched too much) the skipping and freezing seems to be mostly player related. I think the players get warm and begin to skip. The fact that previously "broken" 4Ks play fine later supports that theory. In my opinion the players are most often the problem. When I encounter skipping or freezing I turn off everything and take a break. When I come back everything works fine usually. That's not a good situation but at least we didn't buy the 4Ks for nothing.

    The evil dead only had its original audio & visual presentation on the original vhs & Japanese LD.
    Every release after that changes the image & audio. The anchor bay dvd has the best transfer of the special edition version of the evil dead which most people saw with audio that is not original but a rescore the composer did to get money from his work which is why the original soundtrack hasn’t been released just the rescore. The bd & 4ks are the directors cut which doesn’t just change the color grade like the previous version but changes things digitally to be more accurate to what Sam raimi wanted to original make. These versions have new audio not just a new score. It’s the same treatment jaws got excepted you can get dvds of the original theatrical version of jaws from an Hd master.
    The original theatrical cut from the Texas chainsaw massacre which was what most people saw before it became a classic with the far inferior directors cut taking its place on every format. The original tapes & lds have the theatrical cut which no other release has.
    That said I do like the 4K for the evil dead because it’s the one that looks the most authentic with film grain & depth to the image, jaws in 4K has those backgrounds digital altered too poorly and ruins the watch for me same as the lord of the rings changes.
    Back to the future, Indiana Jones & mad max are the only franchises I’d get in 4K for mostly accurate & good looking discs.
    Jurassic park is the franchise that made me aware of all this. I had the original vhs & dvd for Jurassic park 1&3 so when I got the new hd boxset I got the dvd version because it had features the blu-ray didn’t and the audio was 5.1 which was what the original mix was. After popping in the disc for 3 I was disappointed. The new transfers which they still use today are horrendous. They color for all films are changed to match the lost world and it ruins 1&3. The effects in 1 look so dated and even the trex matches less than they originally did. I eventually got the dts LD and the sound getting worse for the modern release couldn’t be more true. Even Jurassic park 3 had dts 6.1 audio on the stand alone dvd but the boxset gave it this weak and changed 5.1 that was nothing like I’ve heard any of these films before.
    I never bought a release for those films since and after watching a friends copy I am happy to say that since a child I was right! The reason people don’t buy modern formats is because these studios did it to themselves!! They keep releasing awful transfers that sound & look worse for the sake of appealing to idiots that think it’s good enough. The reason everyone still buys dvds is because they all had something similar happen to me and said screw that!
    That said If I see another person say how good the 4K for lotr Is I will end it all 😅

  • @Thecatdrums3
    @Thecatdrums3 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I get upset whenever i buy a modern dvd. I want a 4K for everything & a 3D bd for 3D films.
    Dvd, LD & tape are for me only bought because ratio & audio has been edited for modern releases. Even for films that have small changes like the back to the future series bother me because while the stems are clearer audibly & visually the digital changes they use for modern reconstructions destroys what made them work.
    I trust no format outside of original release for that specific film which is all you can do because anything after the original will be changed for better but unfortunately it’s usually for the worse.
    The matrix I have vhs alt frammed & the sequels on dvd also alt frammed but I got a dvd deluxe boxset before they revolve graded the film on dvd. The 4K is a better attempt to match the original negative but it is not the same visually & not the same audibly so I never bought them in hd or 4K.
    I do have the hd boxset with the animatrix because that film was transferred well & the features are exclusive for those sets the 4ks drop.
    The last dvd I bought was from Australia! The empty man was the last Disney dvd made exclusive for that region but is ntsc region free & paramounts the keep which was only on laserdisc before it.

    This video is severely unhinged to suggest that a scratched DVD is in any way more desirable than a Blu-ray or UHD. Yes, *if you went out of your way* to scratch a Blu-ray or UHD, you'd be hurting. But you'd have to TRY. The anti-scratch coat is something DVD and CD should have have decades ago.

    • @CollectorCreations
      @CollectorCreations  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s less that DVD is more desirable because it can perform better than a scratched Blu-ray, it’s more that I find that there can be more trust in the DVD as a format because I’ve found it to be more durable on the occasion. I’ll always prefer buying the better format but it can be greatly annoying when you buy an expensive disc that has a scratch or fault that stops it from working and to have to go to a DVD copy (or dare I say find it on streaming) in order to have a more fulfilling experience of the film or show. DVD’s aren’t better but I still rely on the format on the odd occasion when a Blu-ray fails me (either through damage or just the lack of range that Blu-ray can have over DVD in terms of what films and shows you can watch).
