    Many thanks to the guys at Budget Model Railways for giving me the inspiration to get back into the hobby after a 45 year interval.

      Same here but more 50 years and enjoying building a N gauge layout 5' by 3'. have pulled it all up once and happy with the outcome now

    Considering you've only just started on this one it's remarkably "finished". Freelance, artistic license, it's all good stuff and has as much of a place in the hobby as the most period correct highly detailed stuff. Cheers

    Amazing how building around a head shunt, a run around and a two-track fiddle yard can produce so many operating permutations.

    Auhagen offer some well priced accessories.. They are actually focussed on TT (which was popular in Eastern Europe), so things like their window and door packs are handy for 15mm wargamers but they are usable in OO/HO.

    Love your n gauge layouts! And I fully agree about Hornby missing a trick on doing TT and not N, but then I guess they'd have been way more expensive than the Kato pocket line! Keep up the good work in whatever gauge takes your fancy 🙂

    Hi Mike & Doug that will be great as your work always is! I find it amazing that it's the same width as a house brick is long 9 inches that's incredible.Also i agree with you on TT.

    Another amazing effort. BMR continues to show that one doesn't need acres of space and gobs of cash to produce a layout that will provide unlimited enjoyment!
    Your BO-BO would be perfect for this layout!

    This is a great idea I haven't thought of! As someone who is new to N Gauge railways I tend to be focused on 'loops' because, like many, I began with a starter set (KATO's M1). But my main interest is in freight and shunting, so this sort of layout design is very tempting (particularly because of the space issue). So a big thanks for this. 👍

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      N is ideal for watching trains go round. It's also great for shunting in a small space, have look at my inglenook and shunting videos for more ideas. Kato track is great but the points are longer so it just depends how much space you have. Any questions just ask, happy to help

      @@BudgetModelRailways Really starting to get into this, and it helps having a helpful community! (Had some great support and nice comments for my own stuff.) I have gone down the KATO track route and not the PEKO, this has held me back a little due to pricing (boy, the cost of KATO pints)! But, I'm looking at this as a long term project so I just have to be patient. I do love my Pocketline shunter - looking into maybe scratch building a new body to make a diesel instead of electric shunter.

    Great layout, love the little KATO electric switchers. They're cute little locos, and make me wish KATO would throw their hat in the ring for UK-outline N Gauge...
    It seems like UK manufacturers just aren't willing to let the N market grow. The exact reasons Hornby decided to persue TT are the same reasons N is one of the most popular scales internationally, and specifically the most popular in Japan which has more or less the same situation as the UK currently with small houses and little room for even a modest OO layout. It feels like a bit of corporate incompetence to be honest...

    • @chrissouthgate4554
      @chrissouthgate4554 ปีที่แล้ว

      But if Hornby had joined N they would be just one of many. TT makes them the biggest fish in the pond!

    N gauge micro layouts are addictive: My layouts are a 70cm long Inglenook, 1m long canal quay "Timesaver", and a 1.2m long Ashburton (yeah, stretching the definition of small on that one).
    Inspired by your shunter loco bodies for the Kato chassis (they look great on my small layouts, thanks), I'm working on a 3d printing project to turn 2 cheap Lima chassis (small amount of cleaning and soldering needed) into a class 205-style DMU so I can add a passenger service to my Ashburton layout (total cost for the DMU ~£35!).

    The kato chassis are great and cheap. And yes neo-inglenooks are the way to go. Can be scenic and have play value, killing two birds in one. I model in OO9. I am scratchbuilding early 20th century diesel and petrol locomotives on kato chassis.

    Crikey! No sooner have you created a splendid multi level N and you’re at it again with another shunt-about! 😃
    That ballast stuff does rather blend in well and gives for a whole different look in terms of the track, almost like the surrounding countryside has browned it off a bit! And you’ve got a lot of playability there with that set up and a spare ‘off-scene’ line to a freight destination. How about a lumber mill? It would explain why there’s so much brown colour to the ballast 🤔
    Good stuff, love those little shunter locos 🤓👍🍀🍻

    Lovely shunting layout. Why oh why don't UK manufacturers deliver KATO running quality on their locomotives at a competitve price? Freelance definitely allows more flexibility, thank you for sharing.

    Hi Great little shunting layout, Have you thought about 3D printing loco bodies in a "UK outline style" to fit onto the Kato chassis (11-109) as they are reasonably cheap and self contained. Thanks

    • @BudgetModelRailways

      We have made a few, but the Kato locos are so much better and cheaper then the equivalent UK

    I like it though N is too small for me. Also shunting seems more problematic than in 00 - tension locks are ugly for sure, BUT they do allow easy uncoupling with a simple spring ramp. That’s a major advantage as far as I’m concerned.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought similar, but once you start playing with it then the size makes more sense. Uncoupling can be carried out almost as easily as OO with a bit of practice

    • @robinforrest7680
      @robinforrest7680 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BudgetModelRailways what I like with OO tension locks is the hands free uncoupling. More than that the size gives more of a sense of presence and weight. If I had the cash I’d certainly go O gauge. I do have some N, but it has never given me the same pleasure as the larger scales. Brilliant scale if you’re into scenery, but if you’re a loco and rolling stock fan it doesn’t really do it -at least not for me.

  • @keithwreyford999

    Call me patriotic if you like, but I love my British steam, and Kato doesn't do it for me, but I love the idea of getting a lot into a small place. I love what you're doing but not Kato for me, sorry, Mike, and I do appreciate the cost of Kato against other manufacturers
