I love your channel. I'm a stay at home dad and former photographer/graphic designer. Now that my wife is a med provider, being home is driving me insane. I value this channel because it's the first thing to give me hope in the few years I've been in this new role. I know nothing about business. I'm capable at what I do, but I don't know how to get the attention I need to get my work in front of potential customers. Keep up the good work, please!

Your videos are so spot-on and helpful. I am an educated creative with a strong background in advertising and design and an Etsy shop owner. When you say there are tons of videos on digital products to make your Etsy fortune, it makes me laugh. 😂It is so true! While many offer inspiring and helpful info, the processes, execution, and financial reality of output and income are often downplayed or not mentioned. Also, the assessment of early quitters and competition is accurate. Great video; you and Dylan Jharus give the best, most precise advice. Edited to say: finding your audience is the key to its success, research is critical to finding products in demand, plus being unique in your offerings and customer service; if you want to stand out among the crowd, then give people an experience ... you can do this even with digital products

I tried selling digital prints on Etsy last year after months of researching how it works and also studying SEO. It was a big failure with no sales so I gave up after 9 months of paying for listings, photoshop subscriptions and hours designing arts based on demand/trends. My plan was to get an extra money, not even make a whole living out of it and that's why I was so embarrassed of my zero sales. I don't blame Esty, but I also don't know exactly why it failed so hard after following the "successful recipe" on spot.

    • @TheBestWill

I wanted to do that too, and I have 20 years of experience using Photoshop. I deduced from buying products that I would need help at some point. My fav haunt was really successful. Then I figured out they likely have a team of artists and an admin assistant, and an accounting firm and a marketing firm, etc. There is a term for when you finally sell enough products to hire help. I can't remember what it is.

The most brutal thing about the internet is the literal zero. Like couldn’t one of seven billion people have given you just one sympathy purchase?
I heard a quote that stuck with me: “The internet is profoundly indifferent about your desire to make money with it”
Anyway, you shot your shot and there are more to take. Thanks for sharing.

Running rough estimate of the net profit numbers with $4000 in sales:
10% average margins on print on demand products: $400 per year.
80% average margins for digital downloads: $3200 per year.
Ask yourself if that amount of money made for the entire year is worth your time for the average store that actually makes sales.

You are right about keyword research. Old school and does not provide enough data. Need to go deeper. Also, think of this the reason why some shops don't make sales . . . All the videos that people made showing how to setup an Etsy store ( there are TONS of them) and made a store for a demo, are sitting out there doing nothing.

From personal experience and reading through the comments I wanted (if Will permits of course 😊) add some thoughts generally speaking and specifically Etsy:
One misconception I believe is a large percentage of, whether Etsy or any like platform, many aspiring creatives either simply don't fully understand or get totally stuck due to lack of knowledge is this👉 Once you have set up a shop, creative beautiful products (digital, on demand or any other deliverable) is THEN the actual "business development" process begins...another words Etsy etc is the end of your customers journey NOT the Beginning
    2) it is so imperative once you have a good store opened up to create an active strategy to bring the world to your products... Not enough space to dive deep into that aspect in a post
    3) Taking time to learn and execute business development and master the importance of systems and processes, marketing, sales (two different things that often is mistakenly understood as being the same), and documenting absolutely everything from day one ...something in the face to face world as a business we call SOP standard operation procedures is so so important and will allow easement of scaling later
    3) MUST BE HUMBLE and willing to accept that in ANY BUSINESS venture, there are roles and so vital to accept that you can NOT be the best at EVERY ASPECT of your business, learn your personal strengths and build on that, leave your weaknesses (or life sucking tasks) to someone else ..leverage, delegate while keeping your pulse on everything required for your success..another words for example:
I excell and absolutely LOVE to interact with people, building rapport is something that has always been super easy for me and as a result I gain a large number of contracts for my service industry BBUUTT
I HATE no I LOATHE IF LOATHE is stronger than hate lol all the painstaking but necessary backend operations.. can I build a website YES should I NO!!! Do I have 25+ yrs of corporate and personal tax knowledge and expertise I HATE ACCOUNTING AND ANYTHING else related so Should I still do my own book keeping and taxes? NOPE NOT AT ALL same with about 90% of various business needs...they literally suck the life out of me (for the record it LITERALLY DID to point of physical collapse 4 yrs ago)
Know about everything needed for your business DO NOT BELIEVE you must RUN IT ALL‼️
Well this is my longest yt post hope it helps and I didn't overstep my boundaries
Thank you Will for all your doing to help the average person. 🙏‼️
