Many studies claim benefits from various supplements or products, but often lack crucial context around the true magnitude and practical significance of those benefits.
When interpreting research, it's important to consider:
    1) The amount of change from baseline - As you mentioned, if a supplement only improves cognition by 3% on average, that may not actually have any meaningful impact on a person's day-to-day functioning.
    2) The statistical significance vs clinical significance - A finding may be statistically significant, meaning it's unlikely due to chance. But that doesn't mean it's clinically significant enough to matter in the real world.
    3) Whether the changes are noticeable to the user - If a supplement improves a test score by 3% on average, can users actually perceive or notice that small benefit in their daily lives? Probably not.
    4) The potential for placebo effect - Many supplement studies lack a placebo control, so some of the reported benefits may actually come from placebo responses rather than the supplement itself.
    5) Consistency across studies - Benefits reported in one small study may not replicate in larger, higher quality studies. Consistent evidence across multiple trials increases confidence.
So in summary, you're right that simply reporting a supplement "improves cognition" is inadequate - we need more details on the consistency, magnitude and noticeable-ness of those benefits to determine if they are actually meaningful or worthwhile. Unfortunately many studies lack that important context, so it's crucial to consider multiple factors and look at the big picture of the available evidence before deciding if a supplement is worth trying.
Hope this overview helps explain the important considerations when evaluating research on supplements! Let me know if you have any other questions.

WARNING: long comment, but I’m genuinely interested in this.
I started following Chael and Huberman in the same year during the pandemic. Love both your content.
On one hand I’ve also thought the amount of supplements huberman takes (just to get a good night’s sleep for example-something he calls his “sleep stack”) is a little weird.
On the other hand, i think it’s pretty reasonable that an elite college wrestler or pro MMA fighter would have 2-4 times the testosterone levels of the average guy on the street.
Uncle Chael, just this past week, you said yourself that even an elite athlete should be training only 3 hours a day, even with a 30 minute drive to the gym.
I think Huberman is saying that the average guy with average testosterone, who never experiences a flight or fight moment on a daily basis can massively increase testosterone if he starts commiting several hours per week training and fasting like is life depends on it, while throwing in some regular sauna.
Of course an elite athlete isn’t going to spike their testosterone by doing the same things they’ve already been doing to get it high in the first place.
Or am I missing something, and I might be!

Im not sure what huberman actually said, but if he is seriously suggesting that you will 4x your test in any way over any sustained period, its a joke. Average guy has like 300-800 ng/dl, quadrupling that would take injecting a decent amount of test.
Now maybe he said it 4xed for a brief window and wasnt talking about the exact same figure as chael is thinking about, etc. in which case i have no idea if its true or not.
But i think broadly chael is correct, these guys like huberman, attia, and other life/bio/longevity/whatever hackers are massive noise to little signal, to the point i do believe its dishonest... Well, who knows, they may be too lost in the sauce.

I didn't watch Huberman's video about these claims about increasing testosterone and growth hormone but, I think he meant that this increase can be observed right after the sauna (for example) and for a short period of time. In that case, it could be possible, even though these effects probably will not translate into a significant increase in muscle growth. Chael has good points though :D

The main conundrum for me is elite wrestlers (athletes) don't represent the general masses. But if a general person followed this protocol starting to move towards being an athlete they may very well have a doubling of testosterone especially if they weren't eating correctly. I would be curious what the avg test of an elite athletic population vs in general. It's well known testosterone has been plummeting in general. I like the challenging conversation.

To be very honest if you listened to this from start to finish it’s easy to understand the message is. Chael is right about Huberman. He speaks about the best possible result in the research and presents it like it’s possible for the general public. in my opinion a very efficient way to learn and adquier knowledge is to understand that if you are not ableling yourself to change your opinion over time you are not free to learn things that maybe you don’t like. We all change opinions sometime about things . The point of teaching or sharing or expressing ideas of knowlege that you aquire is not ment to look after absolute truth, at all. Absolute truth eventualy will change in some point too. So, to me, it is just about enjoying the fact than you can express your ideas and share it with other people. And i would be confident to say that the ideology behind science is based on just look for more information to give us a better understanding of how things seems to be and work so we can enjoy them with knowledge

As a research scientist specialising in lifestyle, exercise, sleep etc. having worked with some of the worlds most prominent scientists (typically in their 60s or 70s!!). Prof Huberman started with fantastic content and strictly stayed in the academic/neuro lane.
Then Prof H mentioned his dad worked at Stanford. And i noticed, whilst holding a high position, he isn’t a world renowned expert in “X” area (typically a criterion for professorship). I was confused when he started the podcast rounds and strayed outside his speciality. Ethically we scientists must be aware that we are in a position of authority meaning the statements we make are likely to be accepted by people unquestionably. So the title of Professor comes with great responsibility.
His conversations do sometimes conflate consensus evidence with low quality evidence and anecdotal evidence. When professors job is to “Profess” complex concepts in a way understandably to all.
In the UK takes around 15 years of consistently outstanding work (from starting your degree age 20) to obtain the title of Professor. Then Profs often branch out into business to create extra income. But they have to justify their tenure. must have a research group still bringing in funding to the University by producing research.
Since Professor is a title you have for life, even if it’s through business or more lucrative means in the UK you have an obligation to contribute to human knowledge (that’s all science is). Since we produce the evidence doctors eventually use in practice.
Maybe Stanford have the money and status to let Profs pursue a social media presence. Or see it as good marketing. Because that’s a lot of time being taken up with podcast interviews which don’t benefit science and by definition are ‘entertainment’ unlike his own channel when he started on TH-cam.

Every source on gh levels and fasting that I could find where not 100% decisive in my opinion. Usually sources quote 3 major studies, JCEM in 1988, IJE in 2018, and JAP in 2013.
The 1988 study had a sample size of 6, was 40 years ago, and used outdated protocols to measure gh levels so I'm inclined not to believe that one. The 2018 one was done using obese women, whose body composition and hormones are not similar to normal people. Maybe the best study was the one done in 2013, however it only used a sample size of 10 men and never stated how long gh levels where elevated for.
As far as test levels go, there where two. The same 1988 study and a study done in 2013 for the PLoS journal. The 2013 one was done using obese men.
Obviously, more research is needed for us to definitely say what happens during or after fasting. That is most likely why people who quote these studies say fasting can "*potentially*" lead to such benefits.

I believe that's totally true, and there is no way and no need to raise testosterone and no need to double it for a healthy human. Besides the amount of testosterone in your bloodstream which is individual, you have also your individual level of sensitivity to the hormone, and that's the exact reason why the level is so different among human beings. And nothing in the world except for injection or severe disease would ever double it even from the lowest range. And the claim that you really can benefit in everyday life from such increase is totally insane. While it might benefit you in professional sport, but that's not a health competition, that's about glory, money and winning the other guy who would put his own health on the scales.

This honestly comes across as an over-reaction. He's not my favourite podcaster, and I sometimes think that he speaks too confidently , but A. Huberman simply shares what he knows. He doesn't pretend that he's always right, nor does he expect that others agree with him. He doesn't denigrate or otherwise attack those with other views. His knowledge seems to be focused on what can be characterized in lab studies, and I've seen him invitee interviewees to fill the gap in his knowledge using their applied experiences in their fields of practice.
I can't say much more about this slight because it isn't clear what it is. It would be helpful to describe what the disagreement is and why it is so offensive. It sounds like a friend got disagreed with but didn't voice his alternative view. Maybe the issue is one of developing the ability to voice differing experiences and opinions without antagonism.
