Thanks Randy. I'm headed for my 1st back country hunt. The last quote was needed for me to spend the extra for a tent."invest in good gear, you wont regret it".
Great video. I would add that depending on weather I change my bag or tent. For those of you that have to go on the cheep hit up the local army surplus. Get a three part bag and go. The down side is they are heavy
Age 65+ hunters: A 4-season wall tent with cot and heater is the only way to go. Osteoarthritis in both knees and shoulders makes crawling in and out of smaller tents a nightmare. Your crawling days are over! You need to be able to walk in and out of your tent. You also need a normal height bed for getting in and out of bed. You'll also need knee braces for those long hikes while hunting. A little off track here, but improvising, adapting, and overcoming will add years to your hunting pleasure as you grow more mature!
Great video. Have you ever thought about ditching the tent and going to a camping hammock? I've found them to be more comfortable than ground sleeping and tents.
Randy Newberg, Hunter Not if you have the right hammock gear. I suspect your tent with vestibule might provide more shelter for your gear. Look into www.warbirdbonnet.com and their Blackbird XLC hammock simply the best. Pair it with the Superfly tarp and its a very very good foul weather system. I’ll take a hammock over a tent any day for comfort.
Hey Randy do you ever plan on coming back to North Dakota to archery hunt mule deer again, if so what part of the season do you plan on coming back early, late, or midway through.
If you do make it, I would highly recommend near the 3rd weekend in October I went into it expecting to see very few deer but we had seen over 80 on our first day in somewhere we had never been previously, only digitally scouted. We had 4 or 5 chances at really decent bucks in 3 and a half days.
Maybe I missed it, but when describing your clothes I didn’t see a jacket/outer layer mentioned. Have a preference for one in the conditions you were in?
Can you go into a bit more detail sometime about your clothing and layering? Sitka and all these companies sell so many different shirts, vests, jackets, etc. I'm not even sure where to start. I'd be nice to know before dropping so much money on clothes. Thanks!
Sorry! Working on it! Been waiting on the video to export for a few hours... This is our first 4K footage hunt, and it's more time consuming than I expected!
Wish I had the disposable income for all that kit. Did my first mule deer hunt this season with “bargain” gear. Wasn’t too bad, but could’ve been a lot better.
Randy Newberg, Hunter Yeah, but I see the benefit of using good gear, especially when sleep quality is involved. I’m working on a 5 year budget to save up for better camping gear.
I have always enjoyed your videos and was pleasantly surprised when you responded to comments .. now I read on a facebook post that you are against houndsmen having a bear season in Montana? And you are for public land so all can enjoy it? Kinda selfish on your part ... won't be buying any gear that you endorse now .. sorry
"Buy once, cry once!" Some of the very best advice I have ever been given. Buy the good stuff the first time.
Thanks Randy. I'm headed for my 1st back country hunt. The last quote was needed for me to spend the extra for a tent."invest in good gear, you wont regret it".
Only under 250 likes!? What the hell, this man is a legend among men.
These modern high-tech light-weight tentage is amazing. I used to go camping with Army-surplus canvas shelter-halves...that shrank over time.
Thanks for taking the time. Like you plain spoken down to earth style.
Great video. I would add that depending on weather I change my bag or tent. For those of you that have to go on the cheep hit up the local army surplus. Get a three part bag and go. The down side is they are heavy
Where's the nearest Motel 6? I'll be back in the morning!
Cool, my very first elk hunt was in that area in 1972.
I hope you get more of them in that area.

good video, layering properly is everything. the only thing i would do is fresh socks daily, worth every ounce.
Randy, I'm the same age as you and I really appreciate the info and your hunting adventures for the insight to help my daughter and I. Thanks
I appreciate you watching.
Randy …. Thanks for the great content … what is the brand name of the sleeping bag BIVY ?? Thanks Trever
Truth to power Randy good tip's on gear is the key, you da man🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍
I wear merino blend boxers. They don't smell and don't chafe if you get wet.
Check out Wiggy's sleeping bags. so much better than down bags.
Great video Randy, thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Great video. Have you ever thought about ditching the tent and going to a camping hammock? I've found them to be more comfortable than ground sleeping and tents.
I've looked into it, but we end up in a lot of fowl weather where a hammock would create some challenges.

@@rwmagnus Never tried one but I would think that a hammock would take up less room in a pack.
Assuming wood is available, why not a tipi with a stove? It's about the same weight as your Hilleberg.
Is it legal to have camp fire
What brand of bivy sack is it?
Hey Randy do you ever plan on coming back to North Dakota to archery hunt mule deer again, if so what part of the season do you plan on coming back early, late, or midway through.
Not sure if/when we will get there. If we do, it will not be in December as it was last time.

My jacket for elk hunting is the Sitka Jetstream Jacket.
Randy Newberg, Hunter Thanks Randy! I’ve been eyeing a Kelvin Active.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
For the low low price of $925, you too can have this tent.
What was the make of that sleeping bag Bivvy?
RAB ultra bivy.
What is the make/model of the liner?
Was that a merino liner?
Nope, not merino.

I would watch the videos on the Sitka website. Their layering system is very logical.
What is the wt of your 5 day backpack setup? 30-35 lbs?
Closer to 55, with food.
Randy Newberg, Hunter Does that also include the weight of your pack?
Randy have you hunted Sonora Mexico? For couse deer?
Listen to his podcasts: he's never going down there lol
Arizona Hunting Adventures im fairly new to his channel lol
Ruben Vasquez the short answer is he had a bad experience in Mexico years ago and you couldn't pay him to go back.
Supposedly he's gonna share the whole story on one of his future podcasts 😉
I'm a fugitive from justice in Mexico. Not going there.
Waiting for day 4....sigh! ;0)
Sorry! Working on it! Been waiting on the video to export for a few hours... This is our first 4K footage hunt, and it's more time consuming than I expected!
Randy what's brand is that bivvy sack.
RAB Ultra bivy.

My gear is not cheap. It is an investment. I spend 10+ weeks per year in this set up, so I need to invest in the best I can find.
Randy Newberg, Hunter Yeah, but I see the benefit of using good gear, especially when sleep quality is involved. I’m working on a 5 year budget to save up for better camping gear.
Good gear is where it’s at and I have paid for every penny. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Buy one piece at a time.
I really liked the look of that tent until I saw the price tag. I've paid less for decent cars.
LOL you pay for quality. Maybe you can get something nice used
Like that saying Mountain Money. That I was the only one that called it Mountain Money. Your the first person I've heard call it M.M.
Oh look a bear burrito
Instead of toilet paper I use and swear by wet wipes or “baby wipes”
Why sweep when you can mop. I live by these words.
wash my sleeping bag?

Hunting with hounds isn't hunting.
Two adds back to back at the start of your video? What's the matter, you don't make enough money from them? Goodbye!!
That's up to TH-cam. They control the ads. Sorry, the complaint box is full when it comes to things I have no control over.
What was the name of the sleeping pad?
