As a Critter, I also see Matt apologizing to people who want to point out rules. Matt could change every rule he wants cause Critical Role is HIS game. He is extremely talented and deserves the world!
The first rule in the DnD rule book litterely is to use, ignore or change as many of these rules as you want as a DM. See them as a guide and noting more.
@@johnbiggscr I was making the point that those who criticise Matt ignore the fact that he is following the rules. I find rules lawyers for DnD humorous and frustrating because if they are so stringent about following the rules they should accept that first rule trumps all others. There are things I like that Matt does and feed into my own game, there are others that don't work for my table but there is no doubt he is a fantastic storyteller and a great DM.
Like the time keyleth couldn't get on fire because she was a water elemental. Those calls are great to make! They're logical, fun, and not game breaking. Matt mercer uses alot of rules, and I've learned alot of him as a DM. But the most important rule he has is: let the people experience the game, and make the world real. Keep it fun, keep it lighthearted, get to the dark side every once in a while. They have real emotions while playing this game! And I love it
@Remy B I have been running DnD in its various incarnations for years and long before I watched Critical Roll my tables home-brewed various rolls, in fact I have yet to play at, or know a table who play the rules completely RAW. There is no "misrepresenting" the game rules, every DM takes their own version of the rules and does things differently. Matt in season 2 sticks closer to the rules but, and this is something else everyone forgets, He had not DM'd 5th edition DnD before the live stream, he and the players played pathfinder which is a very very different form of DnD. To my mind Matt is the best example for DM's because he allows the story to drive what the rules in the moment should be, Manticore's baby dies, he decides it gets advantage to saving throws on a spell and advantage on attacks against the player that killed the baby. When Chris Perkins, current DnD lead designer openly states that he agrees that Matt Mercer is one of the best DM's out there, and when he plays at Matts table and does not rules lawyer and likes the way Matt interprets, his own rules, I think that us as observers lose any right to say "he is doing his fun wrong". Critical roll is a DnD game through and through, because every DnD game homerules stuff.
Honestly, Matt is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I had the privilege of talking to him at WonderCon a few years ago, and what you see on screen is how he is IRL. Truly a kind-hearted man.
@@incitingariot9925 YES OMG. Whenever Matt sees a crowd cheer for him, or a Kickstarter get funded right away, or a celebrity who wants to run a one-shot with him, he gets so embarrassed! It's so cute. You can tell he TRULY doesn't expect it - and that always reminds me how much he deserves it.

Matt Mercer talking to Philip DeFranco about an analogy mentioned by Hank Green is such extreme community-ception.. My little nerd-heart is so happy right now
An absurdly famous voice actor, Matthew, who somehow wound up running a multimedia company with his friends, a percentage of whom are also absurdly talented voice actors themselves.
Philip Defranco the man who thought that you couldn't stream D&D online and Matt Mercer the man who proved him wrong. Love it. I was always surprised that Phil never guested on the old Sourcefed D&D show or Maude's rebooted Fungeons show.
I get the feeling Phil wouldn't really enjoy the more improv side or role play, but I bet he'd be great at min/maxing a character and grinding through some dungeon crawls.
Matt reminiscing about how much he loved Colbert's Red Nose Day one shot is literally so heartwarming, like during that entire part I was just smiling so much because I remember watching it and seeing how much fun he was having!
Omg Matt talking about the first moment he knew he was falling in love with Marisha was also just pure positivity for my soul. I couldn't stop smiling while he was talking about trying to play it cool while falling head over heels for her
His closing remarks also hits really close to home for me. This past year I've learned a lot about myself and not all of it has been good or what I wanted to see/hear.. things eventually getting better is what keeps me going. The hope of that happening possibly sooner rather than late makes me a little more hopeful

I love these humble interviews with Matt where he shows so much of his personality! Loved the Between the Sheets episode with him as well - he makes me feel like any crap somebody is going through currently is fine and won't break one down with the correct mindset. Thank you, Matt.
Matt: "I feel like I've harmed people or done something to really deeply offend somebody when that was never the intent, I take that very hard." Same for me Matt, same for me. I'm also working on that.
51:30 When Matt was talking about the live shows and hoping that they wouldn't let the audience down, I flashed back to the show where Liam/Vax and Travis/Grog pranked Sam/Scanlan with the love potion! Oh, my gods! To be in the audience when that genius unfolded!!! I loved when, at one point, Matt just "tore up his notes."
The story Matt told about the long-lost sister giving her life to resurrect her brother, tore me up! I immediately began slow-crying. Role-playing is so powerful.
It is fantastic to watch someone interview Matt for the first time and see them become immediately charmed by his unfaltering kindness and optimism. It's a joy to watch more people discover that!
I would pay hundreds for a CR open world RPG video game like Elder Scrolls but in Tal'Dorei. Like, being able to meet Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein and go to buy black powder from Viktor or find missing information for the Cobalt Soul would be everything.

@@robinsmith8672 I think it would be really cool to have it be like, at the beginning of the VM or M9 campaign. Like, having certain quests that move along the main campaign to move it forward, getting to work with or for the party, collecting ingredients or information or breaking in places and stealing or killing bad guys, there are all sorts of options. Could even travel to different planes or help rebuild the cities that were damaged in battle or help open the Slayers Cake. So many possibilities for the main and side quests.

@cssruth You should watch Critical Role. That's literally his role on the current team. And he's damned good at it. Well that and "I'mma teleport to you and one-shot you with Divine Smite."
Matt's answer to the "If you could everyone you meet one thing" question makes me happy that he is in the same state of mind as I am when it comes to interacting with people. I always tell the person at the cash register or person taking my order at the fast food place to "Have a nice day" and give them a smile, because I can imagine not many people do that. It doesn't cost me anything and it might brighten their day a bit.
I try to do the same. I worked behind a register for 6 years, and you’re right, most people don’t. “Have a nice day” or giving a cashier 5 stars on that survey they ask you to take really helps. Maybe not the survey, so much - that’s more about keeping corporate off of your boss’s back and your boss off of your back. 😅

I could make this comment a few paragraphs but I'll end by saying I knew Matt was going to answer Liam to his most challenging player and the one who could most easily be a longtime DM in his place (which would be kind of cool to see what Matt does with a character in a campaign and not just a one shot).
I don't care how much I have to donate to charity to make that happen. Bonus point if a Santa Barbara show 1 shot with everyone's kids. Though Liam keeps his family closer to the vest. So oh well.

I ended up talking with him a bit & he was extremely nice, and wholesome. Probably one of my fav people to recognize in any media!

I mean "Phil the sheets with Brian" seems like a decent click bater title. Brian isn't my first choice, but he's still a choice to eye candy.
Phillip: "im angry on your behalf"
The CR community: "so are we"
Exactly 😊
As a Critter, I also see Matt apologizing to people who want to point out rules. Matt could change every rule he wants cause Critical Role is HIS game. He is extremely talented and deserves the world!
The first rule in the DnD rule book litterely is to use, ignore or change as many of these rules as you want as a DM. See them as a guide and noting more.
@@Ginric99 that’s why it’s the DM Guide and not DM Rule Book.
I love your profile pic! Go RWBY!!!
That’s good to know 😃
He is also very humble. He gets embarrassed when people have fan boy/fan girl moments when they meet him.

Matt and the cast had the same feeling going in.
