I saw your comment, and so I just wanted to say as a listener, I'm so glad your Dad played the way he did, and for how long! I know that's miniscule consolation, but just know that his music makes people happy, even after his passing. God Bless, and Merry Christmas. I know this record makes mine a merrier one!
Shell, I had the great honor to meet your father in Sacramento about 11 years ago when he met and talked also to my wife, who is from Japan. He especially mentioned Unagi (grilled eel), and he said it was his favorite Japanese food! He was such a kind man, and such an INCREDIBLY gifted piano player. A jazzman's jazz player. So, so underrated. You should be very, very proud. One of jazz's alltime greats.
I'm sorry for your loss Shell. I have to confess I 'chanced' upon this - was not familiar with your dad or his music, but man, am I glad I stumbled upon it. Your description of "great storyteller" applies even in his music - or one might say, especially in his music. God rest ye merry, lady.
My favorite Christmas Jazz album. Has a special place in my nostalgic heart.
I've always loved jazz piano, but only discovered your father two years ago. Since then, though, he has been my absolute favourite artist. There is something so warm in his music, and so accessible. It's a shame that there are only two videos on this platform, but they both show a happy man. I would love to have met him (I'm in the UK), and am sure that he was an absolutely wonderful dad

A great musician
One of the best Christmas Jazz Trio CD/Albums ever released. Right up there with Vince Guaraldi.
I was listening to Guaraldi’s xmas album . When it was done, the next offering was Mr Higgins. To me, its sounds very comparable to Guaraldi’s. The only difference is that VG’s group used the brush on the drums on many tunes. Higgins group doesn’t. Still enjoying Higgins music!
I met Eddie Higgins at a cocktail party in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in the 1990s. He was nice enough to talk to me about all of his work with so many jazz greats over his career. He was a marvelous musician and a real gentleman. Meeting and talking with him was a genuine privilege. You had a terrific Dad, Shell.
I was there that evening! Superb musician and good fellow.

The first time I heard this cd was on a Southwest plane before take off last year. I asked the flight attendant who this was and she told me. I found it on TH-cam last year and played it all during Christmas time. Finally purchased it this year.
They came on my Pandora, and I LOVED what I heard!
So I went and found this on youtube, and now I've ordered the CD online, and just waiting for it to get here.

Higgins is backed by Jay Leonhart on bass and the late, great Joe Ascione on drums.
I heard both of these musicians many times at various jazz festivals. Joe was my favorite drummer.
Jay Leonhart is a great musician and educator. His kids Michael and Carolyn are talented.

This album is so awesome! It puts a big smile on my face when I listen. I can imagine all sorts of settings where this would be the perfect live music to have. I, for one, would love to sit and watch these musicians as they performed live! Thanks for putting together such a great arrangement of tunes for Christmas!

Love the intro to Sleigh Ride, a little bizzare Jingle Bells, a bit of Prokovief's Troika, and cantering into Sleigh Ride. Genius.
I adore this album! I always had it playing in my car around Christmas until my cd player went crazy and destroyed it. :(

I used to hear Eddie with Ira Sullivan down in fort Lauderdale...Eddie was a beautiful, impeccable, creative player.

I enjoy the New York jazz Christmas, and other relaxing Christmas jazz music,Ray coniff. they are all wonderful!!!

I heard his real play at Kesennuma ( Small City in Miyagi Pref.Tohoku, Japan) about 15 years ago. Yes, before The Great East Japan Earthquake 2011. I'm happy to hear his nice Christmas Jazz at my PC and knew that he past way in 2009 today.
13:25 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - this arrangement is AMAY-ZING!! So awesome. Intro. is classical, traditional -then the combo kicks in and so the verse arrangement so impressive. Definitely giving Mr. Higgins a high place in my jazz playlist and exploring his non-Christmas stuff. A new favorite for sure!!! Thanks for sharing this!!

That is the song that ultimately led me to this album. I heard his wife, (she wasn't his wife then, and I don't think she's his wife now, but she was), Meredith d'Ambrosio, sing it on a compilation Christmas album. I found other releases by her, and one of them she mentioned she married Eddie Higgins.

Frequently mistake Eddie Higgins for Beegie Adair and vice versa. Anyone else hear common tendencies between the two?
Good observation. Stylistically, they're similar -- rich voicings, close adherence to the melody, and concise (but short) improvisatory passages. Eddie's playing had a bit more blues-tinged edge. (For example, he quotes Bud Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare" midway through the first track.) Both artists' holiday albums are satisfying.

Yeah, Higgens trio is more classical jazz, while Adair is more atmospheric/etherial (sp).
