I'd love to have a mini car but I live in America where everybody drives carnival rides. You can't see around them or are afraid of getting in an accident with one so we make a compromise of a 10 year old mid-size. And I am sick of commercials about people concerned about the smell and shaving of lady bits (take a bath for God's sake). And when we were children we went to town Saturday evening to the grocery store (Dad farmed) and sometimes stopped at the drive-in for a small cone or a "baby" root beer (maybe four or five ounces). And we' were happy. I could care less about your designer purse, false eyelashes or whatever else you feel you must have or be. Enjoy the life you have and small blessings.

I wish there was a love button for the video! So many people choose to be broke and ridicule those who choose to be debt-free and have emergency funds. One thing we did with our children was to tell them, "That's not how we choose to spend our money," when they compared themselves to other children whose parents put everything on a credit card instead of saying we couldn't afford something. If we made the financial choices that many made that came with mountains of debt, we could have "afforded" those things. As Dave Ramsey says, "Don't take advice from broke people." From an early age, we taught our children about opportunity cost and debt. We let each of them go into debt to us for something small they wanted but did not need at a young age and had them do extra chores and projects to work off that debt. Guess what? None of my adult children has any debt. They've paid cash for college (help from us plus scholarships and working while in school), bought decent used cars with cash, pay cash for any vacations they and their families take, etc. In my opinion, too many people do not know how to manage money or understand the concept of opportunity costs.

  • @jimmiepatrum

Good video. Reminds me of when my daughter's five children were growing up. When one child had a birthday, that child got to go to the grocery store and choose his/her own box of cereal - even from the no-so-good-for-you cereals. It was a very special treat. They didn't drink anything but milk or water until they were ten years old. By then, they didn't even want colas. I shared a bedroom with my brother until I was a teenager because we had only two bedrooms until then. Mom hung a sheet between our beds for privacy. My brother and I each got a weekly allowance, but we earned it by doing dishes and taking in clothes off the line, etc. Ten percent of our allowances was given to our church. Right now, my most comfortable pair of shoes came from Goodwill and cost $3. I could afford more expensive new ones, but why should I do that when these feel fine? Pennies make nickels make dimes make quarters. We need to remember that every single day. Okay, I'm through ranting now. Diane

When we got home we had a frozen sqash ice cube from the small freezer compartment made into a lolly with a cocktail stick.
My own kids were often criticised when xmas vame along as they did not get thevexpensive toys ckassmates got. Comments were 'oh there are 4 of you aren't there' . I live in one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in my area. The parental peer pressure is crazy. The worst example of this is the dreaded 'prom' season. You see families who can't afford it all, paying vast amounts for dresses that will be worn once and all the accessories that go with them, hair, nails and makeup to be done, limousines to take the kids to prom etc. Bonkers! Similarly, so many who can't afford it feel the pressure to buy their kids the latest Disney outfits. Then they struggle to put food on the table.

They had to prioritize to make it work. They still don't regret it so I guess it really was worth it to them.

You absolutely picked a perfect topic, so current and so pertinent. We choose to live a more basic life than anyone we know personally. But it is perfect for us. We live frugally to allow us to be able to travel, and see places that if we lived like those we know, we would struggle to pay bills, to have conveince and services done for us. Most of our family and friends are earning 3-5 times more than we do in retirement and we don't judge how they spend their money, we realize that their disposable income is equal to our total income, yet we travel more than they do, and we are healthy overall than they are. We believe that we can thank our desire to Homestead and do for ourselves and work hard for what we want is what keeps us healthier, as well as preparing all of our meals at home, and growing a lot of it. We no longer raise chickens, but we heat with wood, scratch cook, garden, use solar power to supplement our energy bills. We preserve foods when in season and cheaper, to be able to enjoy those inexpensively year round. We control costs everywhere we can, and then invest those savings. We love public transportation when we travel, there's none near us rurally, but we plan our errands to limit our fuel costs, and unnecessarily wear and tear on the vehicle. I love to put orange peels in a jar with vinegar, and use it for wiping down counters and sink drainer. I only use it occasionally, but it is beautifully fragrant, especially for the winter months when everything is closed up. We no longer get invited to go on these themed trips, or to weekend getaways, or even dinner when they happen to be in town, because we are considered the poor folks. Okay we are good with that, because we choose not to pay $40-50 for a lunch that is loaded with preservatives and sodium(US foods),and will leave both of us feeling terrible for a couple of days until that gets out of our system. There aren't any farm to table restaurants in our area, just restaurants that use canned or jarred or frozen prepared foods. We don't eat those preservatives, so our bodies complain. So not having to constantly saying no, is fine for us.😊 Maybe this is why we are less dependent on pharmaceutical intervention for our health.

I loooooove videos like this!! True words. I was a victim of this lifestyle problem, too. I saw nice women on Instagram with so nice kitchen stuff or crafting stuff or very expensive seeds for gardening or only buy organic brand and so on. They always told, that we will get sick, when we use all the toxic (!) products in our life. I believed them for far too long. I was so insecure that I believed, that I need everything they showed or used and than I would be so healthy, happy as I thaught that they are. But now I won't play this wrong game anymore.
Thanks again to you and your lovely husband!

A couple of days ago, visitors came by and my husband didn't bother hurrying to put on some "proper" clothing ( it was a very hot day), instead we just laughed about him in his underpants, put on the coffee and enjoyed the fresh peaches from our own tree. We vented about things that bothered us and then played old music from our younger years that brought back so many memories. Love, friendship, comfort, peace of mind, that is what is important. I am pretty sure that a lot of people laugh at us, we make our own food instead of buying it, and we don't mow the weeds until the bees are finished with the blossoms, we could have it so much easier if we just spent the money. But there is no satisfaction in buying a can of peaches. And nobody would ask to take a can of peaches home, but my organic, luscious beauties satisfy the senses. I canned up eleven pints of them yesterday, the last few will go into a cake today, and with every mouthful, I will remember that wonderful day with friends.

I watched your video while eating breakfast (at home 😊). I almost snorted my coffee out I was laughing so hard. I am in the financial world and people come to me for help, guidance, advice, but are absolutely horrified when I suggest they stop eating out for EVERY meal, tone back on the nails, hair and spa visits, scale down from their large truck, van, cross over vehicle whatever (kids gone, either a couple now or single...why such a ginormous vehicle to get from point A to Point B!). Credit card debt is at an all time high, some have 2 mortgages on their houses, monthly car prices for those cars are way too high, kids have to have the best and newest trend for every school year and these last 6 months if they are luck... this list goes on and on. I don't ask them to STOP immediately to save money, I ask them to tone down with a plan for them for one month...the looks, the comments, the sheer horror on their faces...WHAT WOULD THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THINK!!! Some take the advice and stick to it and do quite well while others just dig the hole of debt deeper because they just can't imagine not maintaining their debt inducing life style. I even offer myself up as an example on what I do or don't do to save money and they look at me like I am a crazy person. I do not have air conditioning, I go out to eat maybe once a month with friends, I buy what I need (I have a 48 hour rule for wants that I then usually decide against). I am not perfect but I do try. I practice what I preach as you do. Friends were astounded when I decided in elementary school to get my sons L L Bean back packs (those seasonal character cutesy ones lasted 6 months...if we were lucky) for longevity. Sure they were pricey, but in the long run they saved us 100s of dollars. Used all through elementary, high school and college. They are 38 and 36 and still have those backpacks!! I think this has been my favorite video so far because you sounded a lot like me when I talk to people. Very wise. So many people need to see this. As a family, once a month, we go to a local, reasonably priced pizzeria, and it's such a treat we all enjoy as we rarely eat out. Even more of a treat for me as I don't cook that day! I plan to teach my kids how to make a few basic meals when they are teenagers,it's an important life skill. You made me laugh talking about huge cars! Apart from.being unnecessary for most people and worse for the environment, they take up more than an average size parking place.

Economics aside, it would be pretty boring if everyone marched lockstep to the same drummer. You provide a wealth of ideas and inspiration, showing us where and how we can cut back, and the support to us all to do so if we choose. The "but I can't" voices need to understand that you are sharing YOUR way, but everyone's circumstances are different, as well as motivation. In my mind, those that can, do; those that can't do what they can; and those who whine will gripe about the smallest things and get absolutely nowhere in life except feeling sorry for themselves. Love, love, love the pupsters! They really brighten my day! Good video, Jane and Mike. Hopefully it will sink in with those who really need to hear it. ❤❤

Our home is paid for, and we're debt free, but with rising costs, it's going to take us longer to get to early retirement, unless we cut out more. We'd rather have the time, than things we don't need.

So true all of it. The other day I got a lump sum unexpected back pay. My friend straightway started talking about all the things I could buy. When I told her no I'm putting it all in my sinking funds. The horror look then " but you have to spoil your self a little" my reply was that is spoiling my self now my sinking are all filled up that includes my new rug sinking fund so I'll get my rug in after xmass sales. Again the shock that I'm not just getting one now if I have the money for it. But bit later in convo she then said " I don't know how you do it being a single mum owning your own home. That's how I do it by making sure I stay a head of the game. Her reply " I just couldn't do that!" That's fine your choice we all make them and all live with out come of said choices.

You tell em Jane. 🤣😂 Yes, there are so many different beauty products for different things out there these days. Unbelievable some of them. Like you, I stick to basics, which goes for cleaning supplies as well. I do like to wear some makeup when out and about, but I buy the cheaper brands, which are just as good. I do avoid stockpiling lots of different makeup and only replace the ones I have when used up. As for the road monsters, I wonder how many of these are actually needed, especially for those who are mainly town drivers. When at the supermarket the other day, I returned to my little Picanto and found I had been flanked by two of them. Was very tricky reversing as I couldn't see a thing either side until I was fully out. Anyway, I'm watching this video whilst enjoying a portion of your delicious veggie bake that I had frozen, along with some salad. It's really nice. Thanks again both for sharing this. 🤗

(For many years I have been using a solid hair soap and nothing else). I don't even have a hairdryer, I just let my hair air dry.
I also know people who are of the opinion that you have to "live" too, which means that you have to spend a lot of money on unnecessary things. They don't want to hear anything else, so we let them live their lives.

A lot of the beauty stuff you can do yourself at home. Brow lamination and tint, you can get multiuse kits online and do them yourself. It's nice to treat yourself to something but if it's a lot of stuff (I used to do it) but it starts to cost a lot over time and it's easier to figure out what you can do yourself, and will be able to do it more often, and what you really need and want from outside services.
