When "Justify My Love" came out, it caused so much commotion. If only people knew that soon after, Madonna would get even more explicit with "Erotica". I understand some people may not like it. Different people have different tastes. I vividly remember being 10, 11 years old, watching the video, and feeling both, excited and frightened by it. Well, you've survived "Justify My Love" and "Erotica". Everything is softer from now on. :)

The video is a behind the scenes from the SEX book, filmed in 8 mm by Fabien Baron, fashion editor. Guests: Naomi Campbell, Infrid Casares, Isabella Rosellini, Vanilla Ice, Big T, Udo Kier, etc. Character: Dita Parlo, an actress from Germany during the 20's. Dress: from Oscar's wining song Sooner or Later. Location: Miami ( her backyard, hotel Delano, streets and some in NY. Songs: double tone, romantics, melancholy, house and jazzy feeling. Madonna was against system and in journey explored women sexual fantasies, including the album, a movie Body of Evidence and the book Sex. The trilogy brings a big backlash in USA and kick of the Girlie Show world tour in 93.

You were cooler about it than me when i first watched it.
the song is obviously great, very funky but the video caused a huge media backlash that she suffered from for years. She was called every slutshaming name under the sun for a couple of years. It was way too much for people back then, nowadays she gets her flowers for this song and album, as a feminist statement and liberated women and everyone else while still remaining a boss about it. Way too ahead for its time but it was crazy back then for the biggest popstar on the planet to something so x rated. She went from This Used To Be My Playground in summer 92 to this in October 92. It freaked alot of people out. People react much better to it today.
Unfortunately the rest of the album got overshadowed by the controversy and backlash Erotica video caused. The album got incredible heartfelt ballads and deals with many important topics but it all got a little lost in the Erotica aftermath. I'm excited for you to see the other very different singles and videos from this era and the incredible Girlie Show Worldtour '93.

@@OurAnxiousReactions…The Girlie Show Tour is unique among her tours. While most of her tours are spectacular and entertaining-I think GST has a more intellectual vibe, of artistically depicting her songs mostly from the Erotica era in the context of the history of theater performing arts. The experience is akin to the wonder you feel when viewing the masterpieces at the Louve in Paris or at the Met in NYC. There’s plenty to discuss after you view GST. But you still have several Erotica era music videos to react to before GST.

As expected, no pearl clutching. Well done ladies! Great review! Your comments are spot on. Madonna smashed this!
Meet Dita, she will be your mistress tonight. Inspired by 1930’s actress Dita Parlo. Blended throughout this video are images from photo shoots for her coffee table book Sex. There are many celebrities in this. You spotted Isabella Rossellini, there is also Vanilla Ice, Naomi Campbell, princess Tatiana Von Furstenberg, and even Joey Stefano.
The song is amazing. I can’t wait for you to see this performed live at the Girlie Show. It’s pretty incredible. I don’t know of any live performances outside of concert tours, so I won’t recommend one.

Love this song and the album of the same title is one of my faves by far!!❤ Yes, Madonna became her alter ego dominatrix Dita and the video is mainly live shoots from her infamous Sex book. The video also featured Big Daddy Kane and Naomi Campbell. The video was only ever played on MTV at the time of release 3 times after 10pm watershed and after it was banned… just like Justify My Love 🙄 Unfortunately this song/video was the start of the “I Hate Madonna” fan club as she released the album, book and the movie Body of Evidence so close together that people were too busy hating on her to give the album the true recognition it deserved!! In my opinion one of her most raw lyrically and I just love the album so much!! Glad you loved Erotica… there is an uncensored version 😅 P.S. loving the new hair ladies ❤

❤your reaction, you passed this with flying colors with plenty to spare! From the beginning Madonna has encountered misogynistic, sexist condemnation from religious and conservative bigots for her exploration of sexuality and religion in her music and artistry. Although the loudest objection to her artistry are coming from religious patriarchy, some clergy were sympathetic or neutral to her. For example, author and Catholic priest Andrew Greeley embraced and defended her artistry saying with sarcasm that her religious detractors find her “morally objectionable” because “she has contaminated religion with sex” and for that “she must be condemned..”. For Madonna, these prejudices are forms of repression and barriers to freedom of expression, artistic expression, and to female empowerment that she would confront and attempt to break throughout her life and career. So, in this Justify My Love/Erotica/Sex book era she’s giving her critics a full, frontal dosage of sexuality, eroticism mixed with some religious theme. For good measure she used the emerging pop hip hop beat for this song. Blues, jazz, rythym & blues, rock & roll, and the then newer rap and hip hop were labeled as “devil music” by racists and southern televangelists because of their Black roots and its popular influence, with the rise of rebellious attitude on White youth.
She and Pettibone also gave this song a “dark and mysterious vibe” by adding in the background a forlorn Middle Eastern song by Fairuz, considered Lebanon’s greatest female singer, entitled “El Yom ‘Ulliqa ‘Ala Kashaba” whose lyrics in Arabic is a sacred lament on the crucifixion of Christ traditionally sang during Good Friday services in Syriac Eastern Christian rite tradition. This same song was used in The Beast Within and in a remix of her 1998 masterpiece, Nothing Really Matters. Madonna often depicts contradictions or opposing themes in her artistry.
Now go on with your wonderful Madonna journey!!😊

The video is actually filmed during the making of her SEX Book that came out simultaneously to this video. It was taken on Super 8 film not to make it look like it was a "different time period" but to go with the tone of the video. Being it being overtly sexual, she wanted the video to look amateurish and gritty looking. Hence, why she went this route with it looking grainy, etc. But you two most definitely get it and I appreciate that. Though I felt like Brenda may have been a bit taken aback by some of it? Other celebrities were featured in this video/book. Look again, and you'll see Naomi Campbell, Vanilla Ice, Big Daddy Kane, Udo Kier (which you'll see in her Deeper and Deeper video), and her boyfriend at the time Tony Ward. It was immediately two steamy for MTV and they only played it a few times before pulling it. Madonna knew that would happen, so she considered producing a Video single for it as she did with Justify My Love. Though, it never happened. A lot of people gave her crap for it and the Sex Book, and it may have been considered her first commercial flop (compared to her past releases), but she still sold over 2 million copies of the album. The album itself is actually really good, especially lyrically. Some of her most greatest music videos come from this album.

So i remember queuing up to buy her steel bound Sex Book in London at midnight ..as a teenager and it was an exciting time. The pictures in the 'coffee table' book were taken at the same time as filming this video. The media were going nuts of course and once again saying she had gone too far. The controversy actually overshadow the album which came as a trilogy of the Sex book, the Erotica Album and the movie Body of Evidence. It certainly didn't harm her sell out Girlie Show Tour the following year though

I think that with this video Madonna finally crossed the line for a lot of people that thought her career ended. In the video you can see also Naomi Campbell, maybe there's also someone famous like Isabella Rosellini, but don't know anybody else. I loved this new album of Erotica, don't know if it's because i was young at that time and it's when the singers impact you more, but it's maybe one of my favourite albums of her. Now that i see the video, i see it was done very artistically, don't know why some people thought it was pornography, cause for me that's another level. In these scenes i see only persons living some sexuals fantasies. There's another version of the video, i think it's "Erotica explicit" where there are more nude images, but for me the message it's the same. As always, it's a pleasure hearing your reactions to these Madonna videos, you always understand very well the messages that Madonna wanted to convey. XOXO 😘😘😘

As others have mentioned, these scenes were mostly filmed during photo shoots for "Sex".
Looking back at that time and remembering the actual hate and vitriol Madonna experienced as a result of that book, I think it's interesting to note that the photographer Steven Meisel and art director Fabien Baron, who were also at the top of their fields, never had one word said against them.
Their names were right there with her's on the title page, but Meisel didn't lose any ad campaigns or 10 pg spreads in Vogue. Baron's job at Harper's Bazaar was never in jeopardy.
She took the full force of the backlash on her own.
Interesting trivia: the same publishing house, Callaway, that produced Sex, also published Madonna's series of children's books in the early 2000s.

Well well...the pearls were not ruined. The video is brilliant, it's brainwashing, it's a work of art.
You can imagine what it was to see the most popular singer who had up until that point been the smiling face of America, suddenly change direction like this. I love Erotica. The sound, the general mood, the aesthetics, her tone of voice which becomes low and unexpectedly subversive... Madonna at the time had a team that was dripping with style: Bobby Woods director, Pettibone musical producer, Fabien Baron art director, Meisel photographer, "the style guy" Glenn O'Brien. But above all Madonna's ideas. I think this work comes from a feeling of anger towards one's own country, the hypocrisy, the American bigotry. She received ferocious attacks for this and this refusal was her confirmation and reason for what she thought about society. As she herself said in an interview some time later, she was sorry that the album had been overwhelmed by the Sex book. The Erotica years had a cultural impact that still lasts today.

Erotica the song and video is amazing! I never understood why people were so offended by it! The video is basically the photo shoot from the sex book! And as other have told you there were many other celebrities in the video and book. I mean who can call up their friends and ask them to get naked! Lol! The next video for deeper and deeper has a lot of famous people in it too! Let’s see how many you recognize.

This was a very intense period for Madonna because Labum Erotica came out, a book entitled Sex and a film with her as the protagonist with sex scenes. From here Madonna was targeted and torn to pieces: articles came out in the press where they called her not very good and books on how to hate her

I’ve always loved the song, don’t think I’ve watched the entire video before, it’s cool that you both (Mother & Daughter) can watch this together, I have two daughters in their late 30’s and I know they wouldn’t be comfortable watching this video with me, maybe because I’m their father (I would probably be more uncomfortable for me than them) but I’m sure they would watch it with their mother, thanks ladies for sharing

While I personally enjoyed this era for her, I ultimately found this to be the point in her career where her sexual hijinks became gratuitous.
You will find that her explanations for this era range from reaching to remorseful in the years that followed which tells me she was more interested in the sensationalism than anything else. Her pseudo-intellectualism was her way of trying to have it both ways IMO. She became very defensive about this era which strikes me as odd seeing as how she deliberately set out to get a reaction from people. By the end of the 90’s she was quoted as saying she was “a complete buffoon before the age of 40” and admitted on an interview with Letterman in 2000 that she didn’t know why she created the SEX book and that “it was a time in her life”.
That’s why it’s hard to really qualify Madonna as a feminist. She broke ground, was a pop culture phenomenon, created an entire new paradigm for women in popular music but at the end of the day, she was merely an entertainer and a persona. Her backpedaling and inconsistency over the years is why I don’t think she’s as highly regarded as she once was.

It's a matter of opinion, and that's fine. I don't see where she's regretted or repudiated this artistic era, although she was taken aback by the backlash and death threats, and as a result, toned it down for a while. Being in charge of her sexuality and using it artistically doesn't diminish her feminist credentials if she doesn't persist along those lines her entire career. Madonna always reinvented herself, but was always still Madonna. I think many women (and men), feminist or not, are rediscovering her and seeing what a trailblazer and boundary breaker she's been not only in this era, but throughout her entire career. In any case, there are many kinds of feminisms and as many different dimensions to each. Any women who challenges sexist and patriarchal attitudes regardless of whether or not they wave a feminist flag advances the cause of all women (e.g. most recently, her persona Madame X follows those contours). But as I said, we can all have our opinions on the matter. Peace out!

In the unexpurgated version of this video, Madonna is seen fully nude hitch-hiking along the road. Love that shot...one of my favorites of her. The story goes that she, too, was surprised and miffed that no one stopped at the sight of her butt n^ked on the road. Too funny! I agree, the video is very well done and meant to look grainy and unfocused like those types of films of yore!
