OMG I just bought a flower power Moda layer cake to quilt my sister a blanket and this is going to be perfect, because of course I waited until the last minute :) Thank you Erica!
Love your tutorials I have watched all and made lots of your projects, thank you for all you do for the fellow quilter come sewer project make be it quilts or bags or fabric bowls... from my house to yours Thank You 😊
Love this flannel quilt. Great for a baby as well in a smaller size. I think it would be helpful if you had mentioned at the beginning that although you were using 10" squares for the pinwheels, the resulting block is 12 1/2" so the backing fabric needs to be cut into squares of that size.
I’m having s much fun watching all of your videos. I’m glad i found you, you make it very easy to understand everything. I got knitting and spinning down, I am going to give quilting a try😊
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I'm making a baby rag quilt right now using your original tutorial. Can't wait to make this one. I'd love any other rag quilt tutorials. Thanks for taking the time to make these great tutorials! You're awesome!
This looks like so much fun. This would be something new for me to try. It is on my list. If need to I will look you up again for instructions. Thank you liked this vey much. Sandra B.
I have a pair of round head spring style Fiskars scissors. So when I did my small squares one, I could go straight to the seam without worrying about cutting the seam. I saw a video that said to completely make each square and then cut the fringe. I tried it and it was a mess when sewing them together. But I did cut it when I sewed 2 rows together. That way I didn't have to do all the rows at the end. I just had the vertical rows and the outside edge to fringe. It saved time and pain on my hands.
Erica, you are amazing. Honestly, Ive never ever sewn in my life.Id never even set a sewing machine up. Im now 57, found your rag quilt and I made it.Youve now got me on a whole journey of wanting to learn to sew, and quilting is what I really want to do. I love love love this pinwheel quilt, so it will be my next to try. I have 1 question, would it be possible to teach us how to make a pillow case, so we can match it with our quilts. It doesn't have to be a rag pillow, but Ive never made one and I'd love to make one to match my beautiful quilt. I made a few mistakes, but I got there and even though its not perfect, I absolutely love it. Thanks for everything you do. I love your channel so much xxx
Lorraine, enjoy your new found creativity. I learned to sew from my grandmothers and I am now a grand and great grand mother. Trying to share the fun with the littles in the family.
On your sewing machine, the lines you have infront of the foot running towards you that has 1/4 inch on them, where did you get it? I love your videos, thank you!!
Hi Erica. Im still plodding along making this pinwheel quilt. I just wondered if you could answer a question for me. Im up to putting the sandwiches together, but this is for my grand daughter that lives on Christmas Island here in Australia. It very hot there and I was just wondering if I could omit the batting inside or would it make the quilt to 'floppy' or something. Im new to sewing, but Im doing really well with the help of your videos. You rock x
Make sure to read the instructions...I didn't, and cut all my squares (backing, batting, pinwheels) all 10". When my pinwheels were done, they ended up being 12.5" square, 2.5" too big for the 10" backing fabric. So I had to trim them down quite a bit.
Hi Erica, question: why do you sixe down the inner piece of sandwich , batting or fleece on the pinwheel rag quilt but use the same size inner piece on the fisrt tutorial rag quilt? Thank you for answering this question, maggie
You don't have to they can all be the same size if you prefer. But I made the batting smaller on this one because it was all flannel and when you sew the rows together you have four layers of flannel which can be quite thick, so I didn't want two more layers of batting in there as well. But you can do it however you prefer :)
Pinwheels can spin left or right. If you make them all face the same direction then you will not get large triangles of white or two colours against each other.
That was great! I made a crib size rag quilt out of flannel on the front and minky on the back. It was really hard to get through and I was using a quilting foot. Any suggestions on how to get a better outcome? I'm having to go back through it because it has all shifted a bit. Help?!
I would try spray basting with 505, it helps keep the fabric from shifting. Another thing that can help is to put the flannel down towards your feed dogs and the minky up towards your presser foot. It's smoother and can help the minky slide better :) Hope that helps!
I use Creative Grids rulers which have little tacky dots on the backs to help with slipping. If you don't have that brand, you can purchase the little sticky dots like these amzn.to/3LSuLD0 and add them to your ruler.
Love your tutorials and videos. I have a layer cake of plaid flannel. Can I use cotton fabric to make pin wheels and backing or should I use all flannel fabric? ❤🐢
Hi, Yes you can use whatever fabric you like! :) For my original rag quilt I actually broke all of the rules and mixed quilting cotton, minky, and flannel in the same quilt and it's fabulous!
I love your videos, but when I printed out the pattern. The batting squares are written as 10.5x10.5. But, in the video you mention to size down on the batting squares...could you please clarify! Love your videos!
Hi, you'll want to follow the measurements in the PDF download bit.ly/2EeTjr5 Once you sew the half square triangles together they measure 12.5" x 12.5" and your batting should then be 10.5" x 10.5".
I have the Accuquilt GO die for rag quilting. I wonder if I create the pinwheel, I could then cut on the Accuquilt? But if the finished book is 12.5 and the dies is 8.5 maybe not. Have to think about this. I just hate cutting the fringe.
You can make your batting the same size, but I was using cotton batting which will kind of come apart over time, so I wanted it contained within the block. Plus once you sew the blocks together you have four layers of fabric going together and that's plenty for the rag fringe. The last rag quilt I made used fleece for the center layer and that one I made all the same size so you saw the fleece. So there were 6 layers being sewn together for the rag fringe! Both work just fine, it just depends on what look you're going for. :)
Quite awhile, it does have an auto shut off which is handy. I haven't had any problems with it cooling as long as I put it back on the base regularly, but I press a ton of blocks in a row without it cooling.
Your backing.......... Did you cut the squares out yourself or did you find 42 squares of the same fabric? I can't find any layer cakes with all of the same fabric.
You need (42) 10" squares, so it depends on how much variety you would like to have in your quilt. Since I used a layer cake I had several different prints. That said, you can get about 12 squares for each yard of fabric.
Hi, I used an OLD line called Marmalade, it's a flannel layer cake, by Bonnie and Camille for the front. Then for the back I used Little Ruby Flannel by Bonnie and Camille
One more query. Do we need to cut the edges with pinking shears prior to snipping them so that the material doesn’t fray? Or it needs to fray in a rag quilt?
I LOVE this quilt! Didn't know pinwheels could be so easy. I will be trying this. Thank You
OMG I just bought a flower power Moda layer cake to quilt my sister a blanket and this is going to be perfect, because of course I waited until the last minute :) Thank you Erica!

Love this flannel quilt. Great for a baby as well in a smaller size. I think it would be helpful if you had mentioned at the beginning that although you were using 10" squares for the pinwheels, the resulting block is 12 1/2" so the backing fabric needs to be cut into squares of that size.

Got it! I was watching on the TV app. : )

Always, amazing quilts you make Erica ❤️💙💜❣️
Lovely! Can't wait to try!
Why did you start and leave a 1/2 in at the end of your blocks when slowing together?
Love it!
Love this! I really enjoy your sewing / quilting videos. Thank you 💜
I love your rag quilt!!! I was wondering if you can to a rag quilt with a regular layer cake and then use flannel on back?
I hav that video here th-cam.com/video/L8iwWA-VeXE/w-d-xo.html
love this , thank you for sharing

Thank you ❤❤
So lovely....I so want to make this...thank you so much.
I'm totally going to try to make this one!
💙this new to sewing so can't wait to try this
Beautiful job. I might be able to do that!
Somewhat of a beginner here. Are you back stitching when you’re piecing together the original 10-inch squares to the Background?
Hi, you can definitely omit it, you can also put a thin layer of cotton in the middle so it's lighter but still has the layers for the "rag" portion.
So pretty!, Thank you!😊
I'm from algiera ,it's very beautiful thank you
I’m going to give this a try :) great video ❤️
Make sure to read the instructions...I didn't, and cut all my squares (backing, batting, pinwheels) all 10". When my pinwheels were done, they ended up being 12.5" square, 2.5" too big for the 10" backing fabric. So I had to trim them down quite a bit.
I'm sorry for any confusion, that's why I put the exact instructions in the PDF, sometimes I say the wrong measurements in the video.
I am having trouble on one point, but am working to bring it in closer..precious quilt.
I ran into same problem..cut them as said but 10 inch backing fabric is too short
beautiful work, thank you so much for sharing!
But you can do it however you prefer :)
Erica Arndt thank you, of course, that makes good sense.
Just found the pdf. Thanks for the tutorial!
Are you making these pinwheels from quarter square triangles with the outside edge on the bias? The hypotenuse is on the grain?
I made them using half square triangles. If you watch the video you'll see how they are cut.
Pinwheels can spin left or right. If you make them all face the same direction then you will not get large triangles of white or two colours against each other.
Thanks so much!
Great tutorial, Erica. 🐨🇦🇺🏖
Thank you!

@@erica_arndt great idea!
Love the tutorial!
Hi love your work but how do you keep your ruler from moving when you are cutting fabric i have trouble with that,
I use Creative Grids rulers which have little tacky dots on the backs to help with slipping. If you don't have that brand, you can purchase the little sticky dots like these amzn.to/3LSuLD0 and add them to your ruler.
Fabulosa 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Love this!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! Love it!
I LOVE THIS!!! wowza!!!
Great I am going to make this one
Muy bonito! Que medidas tienen los recuadros y como se llama la entretela??? BENDICIONES ❤
Really cute! Thanks
Could you do a mixture of cotton and flannel for the front?
Yes, I did that in my first rag quilt tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/L8iwWA-VeXE/w-d-xo.html
Pretty pretty 💕
Wow, I'm new to this. You are so talented, BEAUTIFUL!
I love your videos, but when I printed out the pattern. The batting squares are written as 10.5x10.5. But, in the video you mention to size down on the batting squares...could you please clarify! Love your videos!

@@erica_arndt ok, got it! Thanks so much! I got into quilting from one of your videos a few years ago. I live in beautiful CO too! Thanks again!
Love it! Did you purchase the white flannel in a layer cake as well, or did you cut those?
I purchased the front patterned fabric as a layercake, the rest was cut from yardage.
Thank you! For some reason I thought the backing was 10" squares and not 12.5 - I was so confused. Can't wait to make this - thank you Erica!
I have the Accuquilt GO die for rag quilting. I wonder if I create the pinwheel, I could then cut on the Accuquilt? But if the finished book is 12.5 and the dies is 8.5 maybe not. Have to think about this. I just hate cutting the fringe.
You don't have to make your blocks the same as mine, as long as your pinwheels are all the same size you're good to go :)
Hi Erica! I love your videos. I would love to know about the farm quilt hanging on your wall. Is there a pattern? Thanks!
I added the info to the description box above. :)
Please forgive me if it was already there! I was so excited, I didn't look. LOL
No, I forgot to add it, so thanks for letting me know! I always get questions on it :)
I LOVE IT !!! my question is why was your batting smaller then the rest of the squares ? and what size did it finish to be ?
You can make your batting the same size, but I was using cotton batting which will kind of come apart over time, so I wanted it contained within the block. Plus once you sew the blocks together you have four layers of fabric going together and that's plenty for the rag fringe. The last rag quilt I made used fleece for the center layer and that one I made all the same size so you saw the fleece. So there were 6 layers being sewn together for the rag fringe! Both work just fine, it just depends on what look you're going for. :)
I really love this! Can you give me a link for fleece layer cakes? Not sure what I picked was fleece? Great job! Thank you
The layercake is flannel, the fleece or batting for the middle layer was cut from yardage :)
Ohhh gotcha! Thanks for clearing that up for me!
Really like this quilt! I don’t think I heard you say the size of the backing squares. The one I’m making is about 12.25”; which I’ve squared to 12”.
All of the cutting info is in the PDF download :)
How long does your Panasonic cordless iron stay warm? I’ve been going to purchase one, but I’ve heard they cool down quickly.
Quite awhile, it does have an auto shut off which is handy. I haven't had any problems with it cooling as long as I put it back on the base regularly, but I press a ton of blocks in a row without it cooling.
Erica Arndt Thank you. That’s a big help. God Bless. ❤️
❤️❤️❤️
whats a layer cake? Newbie to this, and I have no clue what that is???
Your backing.......... Did you cut the squares out yourself or did you find 42 squares of the same fabric? I can't find any layer cakes with all of the same fabric.
I cut the backing squares from yardage. Layer cakes do not typically come all one color, they're usually one of each design in a line of fabric.
I'm curious as to why the backing squares (12.5" according to the PDF) are so much bigger than the pinwheel squares?
I can't figure that out either, but I am new at sewing.
When you sew the pinwheels together they end up at 12-1/2" square :)
If I use fabric by the yard, how much would I need to purchase to make this quilt?
You need (42) 10" squares, so it depends on how much variety you would like to have in your quilt. Since I used a layer cake I had several different prints. That said, you can get about 12 squares for each yard of fabric.
Watching as I quilt a bag project. What fabrics did you use front and backing here? I already watched the other 5 x 7 pig rag quilt video. @ericaArndt
Hi, I used an OLD line called Marmalade, it's a flannel layer cake, by Bonnie and Camille for the front. Then for the back I used Little Ruby Flannel by Bonnie and Camille
Beautiful quilt. What is the approximate size of the finished quilt?
All exact info is in the pdf download, but I think it's about 72" x 80"
Erica Arndt Thank you.
One more query. Do we need to cut the edges with pinking shears prior to snipping them so that the material doesn’t fray? Or it needs to fray in a rag quilt?
