Great review. I have mine on the way with Max Lens Mod 2.0 as well. I wouldn’t have bought the 12 if it wasn’t for this lens. I can’t wait to review it on my kayak, it’s going to make a huge difference in the way I can shoot POV videos from the kayak now.

thanks for the review. I already have the hero 12. My first gopro. Been using Sony a7iv for videos and while it is amazing, its big. Only had it a day so I am learning what it does. Pretty cool. I go hiking a lot and wanted to make videos of the days out. I am not lugging my Sony around so I thought I would give this a go. I bought a lens mod 2.0 just now based on your video here. I am thinking the extra fov will help capture the landscape better. Compared to the sony stuff everything on the gopro is cheap, that is all relative though.
I ordered Max Lens Mode 2.0, but not yet Gopro 12. I bought GoPro 11 not long ago and still 2 months left to return it or not. waiting for some discount of 12. if you are in the USA, easy to get a discount with a subscription, but not in Canada. with shipping and all kinds of fees, GoPro rapes the Canadian customers. if they had their distribution center in Canada, it would be easier like the US buyers.
According to GoPro the Max Lens Mod 2.0 will not work with the Hero 11, but there are people all over Reddit claiming that they are trying it and it works, if you try it let me know how you get on. The Hero 11 with a lens mod will not go above 2.7K however as the older GoPro's do not have the 4K Max lens mod option.
I am thinking H12 because of HDR video. I have H11. The reason is when you take videos from dark places but bright windows/doors are so blown. Same goes when filming from car. On H11 its either everything in car are so black that its not salvable or thr outside view is overblown which is definitely not salvable.
Haven’t tried it yet. When I have run with chest straps before Hero 12 came along the results have not been engaging or stable enough. I’ll try it sometime soon and let you know.
Thank you for the review. I've got one question though - in which FOVs does Horizon Lock work? I googled for an answer for some time but somehow I cannot get it. I understand that HL works only in linar view and with Max Lens Mod 2.0 it works in all fields? Is that correct? I was about to order GP 11 because of the GPS IF MLM2.0 enables Horizon Lock for wider angles then it's a game changer.

Thank you for a great review! I do lots of running as well. What do you use for the microphone for your GoPro? I’ve heard people go with an adapter plus mic or just use Bluetooth headphones.
Glad you liked it 👍. When I am running, hiking or biking I use the internal mics on the GoPro. I have tried the Media Mod previously with a lav mic but it just didn’t work for me. I find the Hero 11 and Hero 12 internal mics are perfectly good enough for those activities. Hope this helps!
Great review, thx. Is there anything new or all still valid at this time (June 2024)? Am I wrong or is current version of hero 12 black capable of higher quality video by itself ie without the extra max lens mod 2.0 tool in the review?
Thx for your response. Few things on my mind before going ahead with a purchase: - rumours/expectations are a new version (hero 13) is likely September 2024, worth waiting? - I would like to use a GoPro during hikes/runs/motorbiking , but not sure how easy this actually would be, ie saw some review mentioning comms linking renders comms not recorded (true?), also: how to start recording instantly (quik capture not working well, dixit some reviews?), would I need to push a button? On the camera? On a remote? Voice activated? How does that work while driving a motorcycle? Does it start instantaneously or after some seconds? Ie is it really capable of fast starting recording or does it take some time (read Reddit about taking 4secs, but then you miss the moment). Or is the way around that to record all the time and edit post run/drive? Saw somebody mentioning ‘hindsight’ recording whereby 15 or 30secs pre-recording-activation is also saved. - can such ‘hindsight’-recording be instantly uploaded to the cloud (ie similar to live stream)? - how detailed can it record items at a distance eg faces and voices recognisable at 20 meters? Do you have any experience or insights on this? Many thanks!!
@@r2d2v.79 GoPro have typically launched a new camera early Fall every year. The last couple of years have been minor upgrades to the same form factor/shape meaning batteries, cases etc for Hero 12 are the same as for Hero 11, Hero 10 and even Hero 9 launched back in 2020. If I was looking to buy a GoPro today in June I would probably wait for the early Fall release of the next GoPro. I have no intel on what a 'Hero 13' might be like, lots of rumors out there but no info from GoPro directly. I have no experience of motorcycling with a GoPro so can't comment on those specific questions. I find Quick Capture works well. I do not generally use the GoPro remote, I find the connection is not always reliable. If you want to record continuously so as to capture something that may happen at short notice there is a Loop recording mode that will overwrite the recording every XX minutes, that might be the best option for you. Hope this helps.
The firmware/software updates are great, shame they didn't give them to the 11 seeing as the hardware is all the same apart from the 12 has had the GPS removed.
Agree. Some of the updates will flow down to the 11 for sure maybe in the coming months. For now GoPro will (correctly) want to differentiate their new flagship model as much as possible so those updates might be some months away.
My favorite part of this video is that you had a different name for the Max Lens Mod 2.0 every time you mentioned it. :) In all seriousness though, great video. I really appreciate the sample footage. Looks like this is going to be awesome for skiing. If I could make a request though, if you could upload a video with a FOV comparison with the MLM2.0 with the different digital lens settings, I would appreciate that. Ideally, I'd like to see something static, on a tripod so I can see the FOV for Wide, SuperView, and Hyperview with the MLM2.0 on as well as moving. Some of the digital lens settings look really warped depending on how you're holding the camera.
Ha yes - I should stick to the script more I guess. I will post a follow up later this week with some comparisons of the three FOV's available on the Max Lens Mod 2.0
I haven’t looked at the specs as yet! You, several times, mentioned lack of internal GPS. Does the H12 still accept GPS input for other photo opportunities, such as Timelapse mode for sun rise/set via the QR codes? Realizing the GPS would be inclusive of the QR code!?? Without, at least, the QR code input for GPS coordinates determining, sunrise/set is no longer set and forget, it’s now come back later to retrieve! Does that sound correct???
There is already a GoPro Labs firmware for Hero 12. Because the existing sunrise/sunset QR codes rely on the in-camera GPS this code will not work with the Hero 12. So I think you are correct. If I pick up any more info on this I'll edit this reply.
Just did my first impressions with the HERO 12 on my channel as well. I am very impressed. My Max Lens Mod is on its way. Should have it in a day or so. I am moving up from a HERO 9. My primary motive to upgrade is the wireless Bluetooth mic capability. That will be fabulous for motovlogging.
You have some cool bikes there 👍 - I haven’t tried the Bluetooth mic option, I see a lot of people using AirPods and it sounds bad, I’ll be interested in your view when you try it. You are going to love the MLM2.0 for sure
Very interesting video. How do you rate the Hero 9? Is it good enough, or should I get a 10? Or even 12. As my 1st GoPro ? The 10 is £249 right now, so I'm tempted. The Hero 9 is £200. Thanks
I would not get the Hero 9 today. It used the same processor from the Hero 8 and was always underpowered, slow to respond to touch controls and generally sluggish. I have been using my Hero 9 up to now and get really good images and footage from it but I find it annoyingly slow to operate. For that reason only I cannot recommend it today when there are better models out there. The Hero 10, Hero 11 and now the Hero 12 all use the second generation GoPro processor, I have had no slow issues with any of them. My advice would be at least get to the Hero 10 or ideally the Hero 11.
Your video is awesome and so convincing. I watch 3 times already. Question: Are you using 3 way fully extended or just minimum form? with lens mod2.0 and during runing.
@@ThisIsJulianCI see so your arm can rest with proper running posture . And let 3way and horizontal on gp12 with mod 2.0 do its work. Thank you for confirmation and review. ^^
Options are more limited when using the MLM2.0. I do not see the HDR profile as an option when using the MLM2.0. Same for the aspect ratio. With the MLM2.0 the options are 16:9, 9:16 (ie vertical) and 4:3
Great video! Subscribed for more. I sold my 11 for 280€ and got the 12 for 349€. Main reason I upgraded: I love playing with new cameras even though the features/ image quality of the 12 over 11 is not significantly better.
The Hero 12 on it’s own only really benefits from the HDR addition which you will either love or hate. So far I like it. The true benefit of the Hero 12 is the 4K video when paired with the MLM2.0
My thoughts - I would not get the Max or any of the current 360 action cameras right now. The invisible selfie stick will always impress but you are left with video quality at 1080 when you have reframed it, that does not compare favorably to todays cameras. The Insta360 X3 btw is virtually the same resolution as the GoPro Max so even more recent cameras are not any better. I expect that GoPro are going to bring out a Max 2 later this year, it would explain the lower level of new innovations in the Hero 12 (a warmed up 11 really) and would make good use of the wide FOV technology they have launched with the Max Lens Mod 2.0. If you are choosing between the two today... get the Hero 12 and the lens mod 2.0, or wait for news of a GoPro Max 2 launch. Hope this helps
I have the Hero 12. I was ready to pull the trigger on the Lens Mod 2.0. But then I saw how much a loss of sharpness occured with this lens and decided to pass. Image quality is as important to me as field of view. Probably more important.
I have not noticed any degradation of image sharpness with MLM2.0 but I generally reduce the GoPro sharpness anyway. For video, GoPro produces cleaner video image quality when sharpness is set at low or medium.
I 100% agree. I paid 4.99 monthly for the sub. Upgraded to the yearly, which saves me a few bucks yearly on the sub. But the big savings are on my new 12, 100.00 off. AND all of the savings for being a subscriber. I have the dive case, filters, Volta, media mod, suction cup mount, clamp mount, max lens mod 1.0, daytripper backpack, extra batteries and the dual charger (and not just for 11 and 12, I had extras for the previous GoPros as well). I saved quite a bit on those AND my pics and videos are backed up? Yes please. Might still pick up the 2.0 as well... 😂😂
Sounds like you have more than paid for the subscription many times over with the savings! I have found myself buying some things from the GoPro site purely because they were such a bargain. The Volta handle for example, never thought I'd use it but the discount was so deep I bought it anyway... and now the Hero 10 never leaves the Volta it is incredibly useful.
I watched your first video, I remember you saying "sory gopro". Despite this, I still preferred gopro12 for reasons such as longer shooting times and improved image quality. I came across your video today. The GPS issue is still a problem for me and I'm looking for a solution. I don't want to pay such a high price for telemetry. Because the simple labels in the gopro qick are enough for me. However, it annoys me that the application does not receive external gpx data. I saw a few videos, and I saw software codes on github that inject gpx data into the video. But these require advanced software knowledge. GoPRO should not let us down in this regard. A solution must be produced for external gpx data for labels. I would like to know if you have a research or solution in this regard.
I was tickled by your arbitrage financing of the GoPro Hero12 by selling a Hero11, Hero10, or Hero9. Brilliant! I might’ve done that myself but I’m extremely rough on my GoPro’s using them in crazy surf and at the beach. All of mine (except the new 12) are damaged in one way or another. So, I can’t follow your arbitrage methods. 🤓
It helps me to explain / justify the cost of cameras, GoPros, bikes etc at home too :-) If you are clear in the description about the condition of any GoPro you are selling on eBay then I think its OK to sell something thats beat up but there is a point where it probably isn't worth the effort to do so.
Don't know how GoPro can justify £12 postage for a small lens though. Had bigger packages sent for cheaper and next day. But hey ho still got it cheaper than Amazon.
It’s probably ‘marketing costs’. It’s the same here $15 shipping costs for a mount I purchased from GoPro recently so their approach is the same. If I spend $100 however the shipping is then free.
12 is a better camera. New software, new firmware. While they COULD have done this with the 11 there might be reasons they could not. Without a tear down it’s hard to see what they did with the internals. But it IS a better camera on so many levels.
@@ThisIsJulianC I do know the operating system is a full on brand new re-write. Along with a new firmware. I imagine they MUST have silently changed the mainboard. All this COULD be new soft/firm… but the transfer speeds seem faster, the mode switching is faster. The start from off is about the same but I would be curious if there is a time difference. I HAVE had to pop the battery a few times as it got angry with me on charging, but a new software update will likely clear that glitch. I get the new one each year cuz they are the only cameras for my sport that are “safe”. :)
I sold my H11 for $280 and bought the H12 for $299.... Used buyers never seem to know about the $100 off you can get as a subscriber (and I don't tell them).
Looks like that is the case today - this is from GoPro's T&C's on their website: Limit one camera per year. Available to yearly subscribers only upon Subscription renewal. Accessory purchases are limited to 10 purchases per subscription anniversary year. The GoPro Subscription discount applies only to purchases made on GoPro.com.
With GoPro Plus membership this is a sweet deal. I was not expecting to see the upgrade in performance compared to the Hero 11 that I have seen with this Hero 12 & Lens mod 2.0 combination. If you have anything older than a Hero 10 and are thinking if you should upgrade... I think you should.
I agree. Sold my 11 and ordered a 12. And it only cost me in total 25€! That’s insane. And Iam looking forward to buy the lens mod 2.0 very soon. I am more than happy with my deal.

Max lens 2.0 is really good 🤘⚡️🤘✨✨
I am sold on it - wasn’t expecting it to be so good
I watched your first video, I remember you saying "sory gopro".
I am not aware of any solution to the loss of GPS other than to replace the Hero 12 with a Hero 11
Sent my 6 back for the 8. 7 for the 10. Sending 8 back for the 12. No questions asked. It is a no brainer.
Good strategy
I was tickled by your arbitrage financing of the GoPro Hero12 by selling a Hero11, Hero10, or Hero9. Brilliant!
I might’ve done that myself but I’m extremely rough on my GoPro’s using them in crazy surf and at the beach. All of mine (except the new 12) are damaged in one way or another. So, I can’t follow your arbitrage methods. 🤓
It helps me to explain / justify the cost of cameras, GoPros, bikes etc at home too :-)
If you are clear in the description about the condition of any GoPro you are selling on eBay then I think its OK to sell something thats beat up but there is a point where it probably isn't worth the effort to do so.
Thank you for this video! Please make more. I will definitely give you a follow’
Thank you! Will do!
Hey, we have the same last name. Very rare!
👍😀
12 is a better camera. New software, new firmware. While they COULD have done this with the 11 there might be reasons they could not. Without a tear down it’s hard to see what they did with the internals. But it IS a better camera on so many levels.
Some of the upgrades may filter down to the 11 in a firmware update but likely most of it does not.
Did I pick up a kiwi accent there Julian?
Not Kiwi - grew up in 🇬🇧
My next video on my channel will be shot with GoPro 12 as well 👍👍👍. I have upgraded from 10 and i am happy ...
I sold my H11 for $280 and bought the H12 for $299.... Used buyers never seem to know about the $100 off you can get as a subscriber (and I don't tell them).
Got mine for the same discount right after renewing my GoPro Q app subscription
can i get the $100 off now after i purchase the subs today? or i need to wait 1yeae then renew??
My answer here needs updating - you cannot get the camera discounts now until you reach the anniversary of the GoPro membership.
@@ThisIsJulianC i dont think i got the disount. as it said after renewal then ill get the discout, bummer!
Looks like that is the case today - this is from GoPro's T&C's on their website:
Limit one camera per year. Available to yearly subscribers only upon Subscription renewal.
Accessory purchases are limited to 10 purchases per subscription anniversary year.
The GoPro Subscription discount applies only to purchases made on GoPro.com.
Fish eye. I just turn on the Max Lens for HL 4k without the lens.
like u did
That works 👍
Bah why reward them ?
Great cameras
Splurge!!
The Lens Mod 2.0 would justify upgrading from Hero 11 to Hero 12 on its own. Plus you'll get HDR video too...
Meanwhile I wanna upgrade my dslr to a mirrorless lol and I got rid of my gopro and moved on to dji
How do you find the DJI Action cameras? DJI Action 4 looks good but I have no experience of it. My drones are all DJI and I am very happy with them.
