My friend grew up on a farm in Virginia, and a horned goat disemboweled his favorite horse. He's 85 years old and he still gets misty eyed about it when he tells the story.

Back in 2019 I took in a goat with horns and I had my back turned on him he came up behind me and horned me through the back of my arm I almost bled to death .. thank god my neighbor heard me screaming and used his belt to cut my blood supply off and helicopter picked me up and had a four hour surgery it’s serious to get rid of there horns

I didn't grow up on a farm, but I was thinking about moving so I can have some of these goats. I'm pretty sure that I can do this. I've had animals of one kind or another most of my life, and I've done a lot for them for the sake of ultimately what's best. I don't think it'd be much harder than convincing a diabetic cat I had to take his insulin needle. He absolutely hated it. RIP Shredder.
Crystal, although difficult to watch, the video expels the ‘fear of the unknown’ and shows how quickly these babies bounce right back post procedure. And for me, that was the most important. Even in between burning each bud, he calmed right down, responding to your voice and soothing touch. He wouldn’t have done that were he in excruciating pain. And seeing them all together in their playground, jumping all over you and pushing each other out of the way for mama cuddles, is evidence of their rapid turn-a-round and lack of traumatic memory.
The goats obviously do not have a lot of nerve endings in their head and horn area anyway. If they had lots of nerves you would not see so much head butting!!!!!
Thank you for making such detailed videos! This is the same method my goat vet showed me back around 2011. Only difference is I also put a rolled up towel under the chin and tuck front legs back. Our least favorite chore for sure. I will for sure others to your videos!

Same, my parents and I are starting our own homestead so we're trying to learn all we can (the good and the bad) so we can do the best we can for our goats. I think as horrible as it might be (disbudding) it's a 'necessary evil.' I've heard so many horror stories about goats with intact horns. I'm just glad the pain caused by the procedure is temporary. Much better than the alternative. It's a shame because their horns are magnificent and beautiful plus give them added protection as well as a way to regulate their body temperature. If there weren't any risks, I'd leave them.

Thank you for this video. We had to disbud a couple doelings today as their new owners had requested it. They aren't for show, but for the safety of the goats and their kids. This was our first time. We watched many videos and even watched a couple others firsthand about a month ago. I also ordered another burner as I see the benefit in having that smaller size. Yes, they sound like they're dying, but then they go back to mama and get something to eat and some comfort.
Disbudding is an interesting. It was harder for me to watch these videos in the past but now I can. It makes sense why you use two disbudding tools. I know it is hard for you to do but the reasons are clear. This was very educational and loved how they all bounced back, literally. It was nice to see them active after all that. You have a heart of steal to have to do this without tears. 🙏🏽❤️ Awesome video!!
Understanding the why helps me with the reasoning and the need. Afterwards, with success, I can see that the little ones are OK. Thanks for sharing with us the reality of what must be done in order to have show goats and safe goats who don’t use their horns to hurt each other.

I'm so glad you disbud your goats. I would love Dwarf Nigerian goats and because I watch your channel I look at every goat I see. I can't imagine keeping goats with intact horns! Thanks for this information!! I'm going to have to disbud ours this year & not looking forward to it, this gives me some peace of mind when the time comes. Its funny because thats how I restrain our cats to trim front claws. They don't mind anymore bc I trim them once a week as they are indoor cats. Our bucks (3) all have been disbudded before I owned them, but their horns still grew in as they matured. I was pretty bummed out! It wasn't a thorough enough job disbudding unfortunetly. I'm glad you showed a better way to do it! We had a Nubian get caught in a fence roll & that was NOT a fun experience! My husband wasn't home (she outweighs me) & had to be flipped onto her side- she fought hard. Finally got the fence cut to where I could pull her head out of the fence roll. I bought her in milk with 1 of her doelings & she's a 3 year old doe so her horns were already established. There's no way to get those off now unfortunately! Her doeling was disbudded & she's a nice girl though. Needless to say after that I DO NOT WANT HORNS on any of my goats.
If you have ever had a bad burn you know that it only hurts for a few seconds after that the nerve endings are dead. They protest more about being held down than the burning itself. I hate doing it and thankfully my husband helps me but it definitely needs to be done. We don't show goats but we have a couple that can get an attitude and will bump you with their heads and rub their heads on you. We will never not dehorn our babies.

Absolutely my most hated chore to do. However we did have a horned goat get the corner of my daughters eye with her horn. She wasn't being mean she was just swatting a fly. For us it is much better in the long run and of course you can't show without it. Very well done video.

That was difficult to watch, that's for sure. But I didn't know how goats were disbudded prior to your video. Thank you for your informative video explaining when, how and why you go through this process with your baby goats. I would definitely have to bring my goats to a vet or somewhere to have it done because I don't think I would be able to do that. Like another subscriber already said, You're definitely a stronger woman than I! You looked like you were going to cry after you did it, I know I would be! I would be crying like a baby! Thanks for showing that! My first billy wasn’t completely disbud & it is causing him issues. So now I do check for the golden ring so the rest of my herd doesn’t have this problem.
I've never seen anyone use the small tip in the middle, that looks like it works awesome! I'll def be getting another iron someday. I've got the regular tip for now and we do tip it on its side like you mentioned, but you cant push down with as much pressure as is necessary that way. We have 2 bucks with bad scurs and really hate trimming them. I'm hoping to do a much better job on my new little guy this year.
You are doing that for their safety and others around them. It's safety. Sometimes you have to do sucky crap but it's what's best. Everyone watching should understand. It's not pleasant for anyone. Why do show goats need to be disbudded ? I know horns can be dangerous but I think for showing, horns make an animal look more majestic. Any chance you can explain why goats have to be disbudded for showing?

Sandra Campbell I was attacked in 2019 and ended up with a four hour surgery because of horns took in a buck with horns and almost died because of it straight through my arm up by the shoulder and out the front cutting my artery thank god my neighbor pulled me out and cut my blood supply off and have 911 at my house with in six minutes
I'm wanting to do dairy goats and watched this for informational reasons on one of the things I'll need to do to have goats as I have a horse and donkey. Thank you for showing what to look for to know its done right, golden ring and how to do this as I'm sure it's costly to have someone else come do it for you.

I’ve only helped disbud a kid once and he was under sedation, disbudding a kid who’s awake makes me nervous. Seeing how you restrain the kid helps though. How many seconds would you say you need to hold the iron down roughly? I get super nervous about overheating their heads
I watched a vet do it under sedation, and he did it much longer then she did! I was so worried for the little guy. But I figured id the vet did it that long, it had to be ok. Right?

disbudding is my 2nd least favorite thing to do... other than burying a dead pet, disbudding is an awful but necessary evil. I know it's cheaper to do it yourself but for $15 my vet does it for me. But thanks for making the video!!! it took a lot of guts to post this and I respect you and love ya for it!
IDK, I didn't think this was that bad, but I am very stoic about things that need to be done. Better this now, than they end up either hurting someone later, or bouncing around because no one wants a horned goat. I do like your second way of restraint, as you can so much better feel what they are doing when you have body contact, and I think it also calms them a little.
While you were doing it I was like stop please your hurting them but I know it has to be done so I give props to you because I wouldn’t be able to do it
Girl!, Please start wearing a good surgical mask while doing this. Burning skin, bone, and hair are known aggressive carcinogens. As a nurse, they put us thru several classes for which PPE to use in what case scenarios. Your working outside so a mask is sufficient. But I would recommend changing clothes immediately after the procedure. Keep the kiddos back or make them wear a mask too. Both the CDC & AMA have good articles about the subject. I'd also bet someone at your local hospital would be happy to speak with you about it. We gotta keep you around for the long haul! 😉❤

Best dehoring job I have seen in a while. When I was younger this is how my goat leader did it; right between the legs. Much better than trying to hold them on your lap.
At my house we don’t dehorn our goats because we have them set up where they don’t need it but it’s still kinda interesting to see how others handle it. I feel like I should still know this in case something happens where we need it.
We are just starting out with goats and a youtube. I never new how much stuff had to be done. all the paper work. All the paper work wow i never understood how you could remember all the names but all the shot and writing it all down I totally get it now. We live in Alaska but are looking to move get more land and more goats. My daughter really wants to start showing goats but up here they don't have goat shows. i watch all of your and others on utube to learn how to do all this stuff. i don't know if I could do the disbudding my self. I wanted to cry when you were doing yours. I don't want the horns ether. they can be really dangerous. Thank you for all you do. 1 thing i don't think that is mentioned is that the male goats should not get grain or very little. we learned the hard way. we were told to give him as much as he wanted up to a year. He got Urinary Calculi The vet had to cut off his pizzle the stone was at the very end. Thank heaven that fixed it. anyways Thank you

All of my goats are horned and so far no one's been killed or died from them.

It might have been a cow with long horns. They were fighting over their positions at the feeder, and the horned animal killed the horse.
If you shave the top of their heads, it makes for less smoke, less smell, and less actual burn time :)

Using two different disbudder irons works well. I can tell the 3rd pass with the smaller iron didn't hurt.

Thank you for this video. We had to disbud a couple doelings today as their new owners had requested it. They aren't for show, but for the safety of the goats and their kids. This was our first time. We watched many videos and even watched a couple others firsthand about a month ago. I also ordered another burner as I see the benefit in having that smaller size. Yes, they sound like they're dying, but then they go back to mama and get something to eat and some comfort.
Thankfully they seem to move pass the trauma rather quickly.
Disbudding is an interesting. It was harder for me to watch these videos in the past but now I can. It makes sense why you use two disbudding tools. I know it is hard for you to do but the reasons are clear. This was very educational and loved how they all bounced back, literally. It was nice to see them active after all that. You have a heart of steal to have to do this without tears. 🙏🏽❤️ Awesome video!!

I'm so glad you disbud your goats. I would love Dwarf Nigerian goats and because I watch your channel I look at every goat I see. I can't imagine keeping goats with intact horns! There are so many ways they can get stuck and kill themselves. Not to mention the dangers those horns pose to everything around them! Thank you for your informational video's. I've learned so much.

Thanks for this information!! I'm going to have to disbud ours this year & not looking forward to it, this gives me some peace of mind when the time comes. Its funny because thats how I restrain our cats to trim front claws. They don't mind anymore bc I trim them once a week as they are indoor cats. Our bucks (3) all have been disbudded before I owned them, but their horns still grew in as they matured. I was pretty bummed out! It wasn't a thorough enough job disbudding unfortunetly. I'm glad you showed a better way to do it! We had a Nubian get caught in a fence roll & that was NOT a fun experience! My husband wasn't home (she outweighs me) & had to be flipped onto her side- she fought hard. Finally got the fence cut to where I could pull her head out of the fence roll. I bought her in milk with 1 of her doelings & she's a 3 year old doe so her horns were already established. There's no way to get those off now unfortunately! Her doeling was disbudded & she's a nice girl though. Needless to say after that I DO NOT WANT HORNS on any of my goats.
We’ve had the same thing happen where the horns grew back on both of our males ones a wether ones a buck
If you have ever had a bad burn you know that it only hurts for a few seconds after that the nerve endings are dead. They protest more about being held down than the burning itself. I hate doing it and thankfully my husband helps me but it definitely needs to be done. We don't show goats but we have a couple that can get an attitude and will bump you with their heads and rub their heads on you. We will never not dehorn our babies.
Exactly! It does hurt at first but quickly the nerves are killed from the heat and the restraint is their main complaint!

Great job! I had two of my goats disbud by someone else and it was not fun to watch. One didn't take. Watching you gave me the confidence to do it in the future.
Absolutely my most hated chore to do. However we did have a horned goat get the corner of my daughters eye with her horn. She wasn't being mean she was just swatting a fly. For us it is much better in the long run and of course you can't show without it. Very well done video.

That was difficult to watch, that's for sure. But I didn't know how goats were disbudded prior to your video. Thank you for your informative video explaining when, how and why you go through this process with your baby goats. I would definitely have to bring my goats to a vet or somewhere to have it done because I don't think I would be able to do that. Like another subscriber already said, You're definitely a stronger woman than I! You looked like you were going to cry after you did it, I know I would be! I would be crying like a baby! Thanks for showing that! My first billy wasn’t completely disbud & it is causing him issues. So now I do check for the golden ring so the rest of my herd doesn’t have this problem.

I've never seen anyone use the small tip in the middle, that looks like it works awesome! I'll def be getting another iron someday. I've got the regular tip for now and we do tip it on its side like you mentioned, but you cant push down with as much pressure as is necessary that way. We have 2 bucks with bad scurs and really hate trimming them. I'm hoping to do a much better job on my new little guy this year.

Why do show goats need to be disbudded ? I know horns can be dangerous but I think for showing, horns make an animal look more majestic. Any chance you can explain why goats have to be disbudded for showing?
It’s purely for safety of everyone involved. It’s a standard set by the show industry and is common nearly everywhere.
My son usually watches with me and the Swiss boy is his favorite. So I am just not going to tell him about this lol. As usual, very informative and well explained. Thanks for posting.

I love that you dont candy coat goat ownership. Its nice to be educated . alot of people dont know all the things , how and why that has to be done. ( i dont own a goat..but love them. ) im always learning something new. Thank you! Ps: i about choked on my coffee when you said you werent sitting on him LOL ( goat Goddess who loves her babies and the mamas..getting emotional about de budding ..gonna sit on a goat baby..lol.) I likeed the way you restrain your babies , one they feel more secure..also you can control them better where the head and ears are, and most importantly..not having a moving targer where you accidenty not. Get the horn bud ( so its done quick and over with..only minimal pain..then you love on them. ( thats why i call you the goat Goddess..you are awesome.i

Sandra Campbell I was attacked in 2019 and ended up with a four hour surgery because of horns took in a buck with horns and almost died because of it straight through my arm up by the shoulder and out the front cutting my artery thank god my neighbor pulled me out and cut my blood supply off and have 911 at my house with in six minutes

I'm wanting to do dairy goats and watched this for informational reasons on one of the things I'll need to do to have goats as I have a horse and donkey. Thank you for showing what to look for to know its done right, golden ring and how to do this as I'm sure it's costly to have someone else come do it for you.

I’ve only helped disbud a kid once and he was under sedation, disbudding a kid who’s awake makes me nervous. Seeing how you restrain the kid helps though. How many seconds would you say you need to hold the iron down roughly? I get super nervous about overheating their heads
I watched a vet do it under sedation, and he did it much longer then she did! I was so worried for the little guy. But I figured id the vet did it that long, it had to be ok. Right?
The amount of seconds needed and/or safe depends and varies according to age of kid, breed, sex, size of horn buttons. It's a matter of judgment.
From what I’ve been told, the hotter the iron and the shorter the contact time for the copper ring to form, the better
It depends. Smaller kids need less time and larger kids need more time. No more than 10 seconds at a time. You don't want to get their head too hot.

disbudding is my 2nd least favorite thing to do... other than burying a dead pet, disbudding is an awful but necessary evil. I know it's cheaper to do it yourself but for $15 my vet does it for me. But thanks for making the video!!! it took a lot of guts to post this and I respect you and love ya for it!
IDK, I didn't think this was that bad, but I am very stoic about things that need to be done. Better this now, than they end up either hurting someone later, or bouncing around because no one wants a horned goat. I do like your second way of restraint, as you can so much better feel what they are doing when you have body contact, and I think it also calms them a little.
While you were doing it I was like stop please your hurting them but I know it has to be done so I give props to you because I wouldn’t be able to do it

Girl!, Please start wearing a good surgical mask while doing this. Burning skin, bone, and hair are known aggressive carcinogens. As a nurse, they put us thru several classes for which PPE to use in what case scenarios. Your working outside so a mask is sufficient. But I would recommend changing clothes immediately after the procedure. Keep the kiddos back or make them wear a mask too. Both the CDC & AMA have good articles about the subject. I'd also bet someone at your local hospital would be happy to speak with you about it. We gotta keep you around for the long haul! 😉❤

this is the best dehorning method i saw she used two type of sizes tools for dehorning and i felt too quickly pain not too much to indure
Best dehoring job I have seen in a while. When I was younger this is how my goat leader did it; right between the legs. Much better than trying to hold them on your lap.

At my house we don’t dehorn our goats because we have them set up where they don’t need it but it’s still kinda interesting to see how others handle it. I feel like I should still know this in case something happens where we need it.
We are just starting out with goats and a youtube. I never new how much stuff had to be done. all the paper work. All the paper work wow i never understood how you could remember all the names but all the shot and writing it all down I totally get it now. We live in Alaska but are looking to move get more land and more goats. My daughter really wants to start showing goats but up here they don't have goat shows. i watch all of your and others on utube to learn how to do all this stuff. i don't know if I could do the disbudding my self. I wanted to cry when you were doing yours. I don't want the horns ether. they can be really dangerous. Thank you for all you do. 1 thing i don't think that is mentioned is that the male goats should not get grain or very little. we learned the hard way. we were told to give him as much as he wanted up to a year. He got Urinary Calculi The vet had to cut off his pizzle the stone was at the very end. Thank heaven that fixed it. anyways Thank you
