A blast from the past - Amazing to hear Andreas speak in dialect, he sounds so much like my uncle and cousins on the west side of Karlsruhe - Schwaebisch and Pfaeltzich share a lot of commonalities - I remember as a child in the 70's visiting my Oma and we had to go to the rich guy's house down the street so I could call home - he raced pigeons and was one of the few people in the Dorf with a personal telephone
Here in my home state in the USA they have taken the back yard concept of pigeons and turned it into one loft races. Now it feels more like a rich man's sport. I had pigeons nearly 25 years and competed locally fairing well in wins. My original stock birds were from Ganus Family Loft in his early days. Most of my pedigrees had birds that were imported from Holland. I miss racing pigeons against local competition in our back yard lofts. Nothing like pulling a rubber counter marker and turning that dial on an old time stamped clock. It just got to expensive to keep up today. I feel like to save the sport and keep pigeons an interest for futures to come. The one loft races shouldn't be the prime way of racing. Bring back back yard racing.
I agree with you ,I've bean raising pigeons for 50 years, over the years I've raised and shown several fancy Breeds and have flown performing breeds such as rollers and Highflighers, I've had some top quality pigeons back in the day, I used to race homing pigeons back in the 90s, I had to quit because I got sick and tired of the greed and the millionaires taking over. The sport and hobby of raising pigeons for fun and pleasure has been ruined. What used to be a hobby for the Common working man and young kids is now for the rich millionaires, Even the fancy pigeon breeds has become expensive for only the rich people, I remember when pigeons could be had for either free from your friends or local fanciers or just a few dollars to $20 and this was just about 15 years ago, In 2009 I decided to slowly get out of the hobby of pigeons by not breeding anymore and just letting all the birds that I have live out their lives until they finally died off, well a few years ago I decided I wanted to continue raising pigeons and get some new Birds but to my surprise the price of pigeons was way out of my price range, I wanted some fancy pigeons and some rollers and everybody's wanting over $100, $300 or more per bird, so now I just have commoners and mixed breeds all that I got for free, I caught a few wild commoners, I had a leftover Birmingham that crossed with the commoners, I caught a couple of someone's high-flyers that came to my loft,I caught a Roller that came to my loft.I recently rescued a racing homer that I found in the street hit by a car, The high-flyers both being males one crossed with the female roller. So that's the pigeons I have and I just enjoy them on my own in my own backyard, as most of the pigeon fanciers nowadays have just become snobs, So I say to hell with all the pigeon people that ruined the sport and hobby of raising pigeons for the Common working man.
Brilliant sport thanks for sharing so I can reflect. 12 years ago my husband and I raced homing pigeons and the birds are amazing and so clever. The pigeon even won medals called the Dickens medal for their efforts during ww2 and saving many lives . 1 was called Scotch lass sorry I can't remember the other 1. Taking your new Born birds on their maiden flight with their parents is an experience raising pigeons you have to be calm, in the schemes the sport is really dieing out in Edinburgh. Still gives me a warm heart remanising watching and relating so much . We had 100,s of them. We used to be in a club and they got caught cheating. Thankfully we were on holiday when they caught them , we were really new to the sport and never realised just how greedy some ppl . £500 an egg the dude was charging , he got caught and only banned for 10 years. I used to say to him your arms must be like an octopus when the birds come home from a race . I'm talking seconds inbetween each bird being caught the ring taken of their leg then put the ring in a special wee tin that then went inside the timer. It wasn't just me being suspicious about him the whole Scottish pigeon federation were mad. All those years invested and its definitely not a cheap sport . Definitely worth it though . Stay Golden 🌟
What pigeons is he using, delbar, bushard?? If anyone knows please let me know, thanks. My father use to race yrs ago, he thought bushard were a bit light and not good for winter, winds etc, but dlbar was able to push though.
Yes I heard that Indonesian pigeons are really good. But you need to also consider Kerala(India) pigeons they have world record last month 33 hours 28 minutes (highfllyer).
