He's immensely respected. And rightly so! He's fantastic! I ended up renting every single film that he was ever in. He's genuinely one of the best actors in the world...and he tends to choose very interesting projects. I Saw the Devil is really good and so is, Sympathy for Ms. Vengeance, but I'm still to this day in awe of his acting prowess from Oldboy. That film was magnificent!!

Choi Min Sik, (Mr. Jang), did a study of Steven Roots character in "No Country for Old Men". The Mr. Jang character in "Lucy" used a great variety of props to support his disinterested, dismissive character, while "No Country for Old Men" accomplished the same with superb acting and succinct dialogue.
How underboss and the cappo restrict their smiles makes me finally laugh out loud. To squeeze those smiles near their boss make those smiles equivalent to a whole day laughter😂

As he obviously would have been living in New York, consider it a year of immersion as well as schooling. More than enough for him to learn English that well, and he could already have had some English before arriving.
Ordinarily I wouldn't care for this type of movie but the director is an interesting one and so I gave it a viewing: turned out I more than liked it--I take the opportunity to watch it whenever it turns up. Special effects, plotting and the acting are superior to movies of this genre and the plotting if really creative. The acting is superior as well.
Suddenly, Black Panther comes to mind. The Korean woman in Black Panther has the worst Korean pronunciation skills. She said it was because Marvel was trying to hire an Asian actor and taught her poor Korean. I personally think that showing a true native performance with the best actor of that nationality brings out the details of the movie much more. Marvel is somewhat lacking in such details.
I've been in what were to me quite scary situations before but this...the absolute disregard for life, the casual murder...I'd probably have crapped my pants, then been shot for messing up Jang's chair.
