  • How to change the fuel filter element on a Ford/Peugeot/Citroen/Volvo etc 2.0 Diesel. These filters have a nasty bit of pipework that likes to trap an air bubble, which then prevents starting. This is probably one of the most common diesel engines being found in many cars built in the 2000s. Later versions are similar, but don't have the pipework that tends to trap air. I would not attempt this job without some sort of vacuum pump as you may run the high-pressure fuel pump dry and cause damage.

Thanks for the info in this, I have a Ford Focus diesel in my garage, its been sat there for at least 5 years now, I made the mistake of changing the diesel filter and then running it on the starter motor until the diesel came through, 5 miles later the diesel pump failed and in the process, because of the return to tank pipe, it distributed metal shards all the way through the system, from tank, feed and return pipes, regulator and injectors, I have cleaned all of this out and have fitted another pump and injectors, just have not been brave enough to try starting it since! This may well be the advice I needed.

Euugh, that's a shame, always the risk when running a pump so dry!

Thank you so much. My complete fuel filter housing was replaced because the 6-shape on top of the cap was practically round from all the filter replacements over the years. it was NOT bled correctly at all. My fuel line on the right of the filter is completely empty. However I have a handpump, so I'm wondering if that is enough. Going to try it tomorrow. There seems to be a ton of air in my lines and it will barely start at all.. At this point I'm sure it has damaged my pump. I pray not.

Hold on a minute, I've got that same engine in my Citroen c4 picasso and I have a hand pump bulb. Have ford decided to do away with that to save a few pence?

@@theweekthatis Would the hand pump be able to achieve the same results as your vacuum pump? Can I complete this entire process with the hand pump?

Did you have to replace the alternator shortly after drowning it in diesel.

Hello On some of these vehicles there is a white angel one way valve that comes out the top of a hand pump. Would you know if the fitment on the incoming side of the filter lid are all the same width depth please as my mechanic lost it and ive nothing to put on the end of the hand primer.

That would be a non-Ford variant?

Failed to show or describe where you connected the vacuum hose. First part good but key part, bleeding, no good.

I'm not sure what you mean. It's in shot. The green connector.
