    PSA ABOUT BED BUGS because if I can save one person from the horror I experienced my job is done: bed bugs can live up to ten YEARS without feeding and they DO NOT APPEAR during the daytime, only at night and ONLY when a food source (i.e. a person) is sitting on the infested fabric item. So there's no way they'd know bed bugs were in or on it until they were using it.

    If it’s on the curb because someone’s getting rid of it, it’s fair game. I’ve gotten plenty of furniture someone else took out to the dumpster. I wouldn’t personally get something after it’s been rained on, but I don’t think there’s anything ethically wrong with it.

      it's not the ethics that are being discussed, although I sincerely hope for her sake that this is all a faked video for clickbait. In fact I'd go so far as to congratulate her for that because it's better than the alternative, that she had a perfectly good couch already and risked infection and infestation all for the supposed 'value' of a thing that stopped being worth 8k the second someone paid 8k for it and took it off the lot.

      I don't think anyone would argue that it's ethically better to reuse things, but most people also don't trust a used mattress. I think the concern was more about if it's clean/safe when you don't know the background

    • @soldiaz7261
      @soldiaz7261 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's fair game, it's not safe or healthy. couches are literally all porous surfaces and especially in the rain are the best place for bugs, mold, and bacteria to grow/propagate.
      i imagine you dont have a mattress that was put out, soaking wet on the curb for 12-24 hours, and then slept on it. and a couch is even higher risk of all the concerns from that.

  • @dazeslays
    @dazeslays ปีที่แล้ว +60

    my completely unnecessary opinion on this whole thing:
    -there's nothing wrong with taking items that are out on the curb as long as it's clear they're up for grabs (don't take a bike that's on the curb, lol). sometimes people throw decent things away, or even intentionally leave things on the curb hoping someone else will take it
    -use common sense when taking curb items. they may be fine, but there may be problems. i generally stay away from anything soft and/or upholstered due to risks of insects or mold/mildew
    -if you do decide to take an upholstered item, clean it thoroughly and correctly. you may even want to invest in hiring stanley steemer or another furniture cleaning service
    -the woman in this tiktok did NOT clean the couch correctly, and this may cause problems down the line
    -if you look through some of her other videos, it's clear she has the money to spare on getting the couch properly cleaned. i don't know why she didn't
    -this woman also already had a perfectly good couch that wasn't even a year old. what did she do with it? i don't think we know. i'm a big proponent of reusing items, but the positive environmental and economic impact of picking up a second-hand couch is somewhat negated if it replaces a new one. i hope she gave it away
    -people are up in arms about classism, and i understand. i grew up lower-middle class in a high-income city and curbside furniture finds were (and still are!) always exciting. salvaging furniture should be normalized because it is both environmentally and economically beneficial. however, the woman who found this couch was not in need of a couch and is not struggling for money. something rubs me the wrong way about how this is a cute quirky thing to her like "omg i found a designer couch everyone come see how lucky i am!!!" when furniture scavenging is a necessity for many people
    tldr: grabbing furniture off the street is fine, make sure you clean it thoroughly and are aware of risks (pests/mold), if you're replacing furniture give it away instead of throwing it out; the only real problem i have with this whole situation is that she's well-off but didn't care enough to spend money on cleaning it correctly

    I got so frustrated watching this lmao I am lower class and it's actually really awesome finding GOOD furniture on the side of the road. I cleaned and patched an old grandma couch and sat and watched this video on it. It's super clean and it was free! Cleaned it with the power of lesbian. Me and my partner scrubbed it brushed it clean of hair and dust and covered in baking soda then spray with white vinegar. Let dry in the sun or by a vent in the house or window and it's brand new damn near. All the potential bugs like daddy long legs should leave during the cleaning. If you are thurough and follow a youtube tutorial it should be fully xleaned and ready without worry of icky stuff. Bed bugs scare me for sure and my only gripe with this lady is the fact it got rained on....IN NEW YORK. I live in the midwest

    • @Goth_Bat
      @Goth_Bat ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Fr the raining thing is what got me too but the amount of people going on one extreme or the other is very frustrating. It’s either “it’s not classism it’s just gross!” Or “it’s a perfectly fine couch!” Without a middle ground. Plus, the people saying she wasted a perfectly good piece of furniture getting rid of her other couch when it wasn’t stated what she did with it. The internet goes wild over the dumbest shit I swear 💀

    Picking up this stuff ia super normal in the suburbs that I'm in, but to the rich people replacing their furniture often. There's a another suburb nearby that's pretty wealthy. People just throw out perfectly good flatscreens and furniture because its not the new stuff. Went by a place that had left out 5 flatscreen tvs, they couldn't have been more than 2 years old.

    where i live, picking up furniture left out on street curbs is a super normal thing, people leave their stuff outside their houses all the time and itll usually be gone by later that day!! pretty reliable way of getting nice free stuff, usually its just a product of people moving and not having enough space in their house for everything. then again i live in a pretty poor rural area so everyones always looking for free stuff lol. either way this seems like rich people discourse to me, my broke ass would not turn down a free couch no matter what it's infested with

    Hate to break it to y'all, but wealthy people are genuinely insane and dgaf about how much something cost if they don't want it anymore. Just a few weeks ago, another TH-camr I watched let everyone know that a chair his assistant bought off Facebook Marketplace for $50 sold at auction at Sotheby's for $85,000. The lady who sold it knew how much it was worth; she just didn't care enough to sell it properly.
    And that was in LA, where people have big fucking houses; this girl was in NYC. The person who owned it before her probably had a dog that tore up the couch a bit and maybe got mud on it. Not a big deal.
