Just A Few Acres Farm shouted you out on one of his Farmall restoration videos. Said he considered you the gold standard. I've spent the last three days bingeing your Super M and D2 restorations. I love yer channel!
@@squatch253 I also enjoy Pete's video as well as yours. I consider your gasket making the gold standard lol. if I have to make a gasket-its the bare minimum of effort. No one will see it anyway right 😛
I get the impression you'll be ploughing in circles, just so you can see the silver on the front wheels. Looks really good, the Norden wheels on before were like having a space saver on your car. Well worth doing.
Spindle and the hub sure did go together nicely. The wheel weights and the silver rims on all wheels really sets the tractor off not to mention the big pulley!
Squatch you make everything look so easy but I just put a new inner tube on a rear tire on my M not only was it 2 6 hour days but I would never post it on TH-cam because I don’t need to show the world what a brain dead basket case I am just to give you an example it took me 1 hour to make sure I was putting the tire on the rim the right way so the lugs ran the right way 😂😂 But that tractor is beautiful and so is your 1948 8N Ford you were grading with the other day and they both run and sound so nice Carry on 😀🇨🇦
I got a bunch of trays , some used from a school kitchen, some new from a restaurant supply store. Some are aluminum, some plastic or fiberglass on the older ones. I use them for things like working on stuff like the hub change to keep things clean. I usually end up using two, one for parts , one for tools. I started using them while working in the pits on a funny car team and think they are a big help that you may consider. Nice tractor!
I have and use the same bearing packer and love it. Packed them the old-fashioned way for many years, very messy. Tech tip: Keep it in a clean one gallon paint can to eliminate contamination when not in use. Nice looking Super M btw.
After you the new front wheels made the tractor complete . When you put that large pully on the super m it started to list to the right . Awesome video .
Wheel swap went well without any drama. New building going up shortly. Maybe, hopefully, 2024 is going to be way better than 2023 for Squatch! Now if X231 will cooperate…………………..
Stylin' and profilin' on a tractor. Really looks classic, worth the time and effort. Maybe you could give Mr. Bork a lesson or two on classing up the equipment.
Kudos to you ole M looks like it just left the factory many years back can't say exactly for I'm not sure of yr mdl of yours just guessing I'd say 48 to 51 yr??:I've a question why weight s on up front tires ?? Plan on pulling something quite heavy out back I reckon??I always felt like it made my steering even more difficult to steer. On account of weight being on the tire "spindle "that's why I installed a "; what I call a flat plate weight rig " and put what desired weight I wanted or may or may not need !! Anywho super great job you do & obviously have done on your ole super M !! YOU SURLY DESERVE THE CREDIT &: THANX FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE
That looks a lot better, looks like a Farmall. If my memory is correct, I can remember someone saying that the hub swap couldn't be done. 😅 Have a Great Day. 😊
Longtime viewer here. It always bothered me that the Super M's front rims were different from its rears and the rebuild series explained why with it being an aftermarket front axle, and the rationale for one-piece steel rims when it had the loader bucket. Still I was always thinking it would look so, so better if a way could be found to fit a pair of the factory-style wheels on it. So glad that since it won't ever have a loader bucket on it again, you and Sr. went through the hassles of mixing and matching bearing parts and doing a bit of custom fabbing to make this work! It looks so, so much better!
I was taught to and have always put some air in the tube when putting the tire on the rim to avoid pinching the tube with the tire or irons. skitos here are bad too. not a lot of Dragon flies either to eat them.
I have always liked the factory front wheels. I did like those Norden rims too because they were unique to me, I hadn't seen them before. I wonder if they would have looked really good painted silver with just the cap red. They had 4 square holes, would they built to accept Farmall front weights? That would have looked really good too.
Oh yeah, Duh. For some reason I thought I saw 4 stand bolts when the weights were sitting there painted. There may have never been weights to fit those rims. Now I understand more why you did all the effort to cross bearings and do the swap.
Out in the field, there's no comparison to having a much larger front tire. We had a MF 275, the front pivot block(frog)broke we replaced the frog and modified the front spindles, and installed some worn rear 24's from a small Farmall on the front of the 275. Worked fantastic, and looked kinda cool as faux 4x4 haha
Hi, the super looks terrific how ever I did spot a problem. In my opinion the steering arms on the stub axles are in the wrong position, they should both moved in towards the centre of the tractor. If you run a string line from the centre of the king pin back to the centre of the rear axle it must intersect with the tie rod ball joint this gives you the correct toe in and toe out when turning. Look up ACKERMANN'S PRINCIPLE OF STEERING. From Australia
Those steering arms are keyed in place on the stub shafts by a single, fixed position keyway so repositioning them isn’t possible. Now if they had a multiple spline on them, then repositioning would be possible 👍
That's not how Ackermann works on most tractor wide fronts. The center arm that moves the tie rods has two pivot points that effectively shorten the tie rods as you turn right or left causing the inside wheel to turn sharper than the outside.
New bearings require preload (although very light with wheel bearings) because of the "wearing in" process that will happen early on. A slight preload on brand-new bearings will ensure a proper zero-end float with little to no preload once everything wears in.
The Zeus pulley looks good on there, almost like it was meant to be. Can’t imagine how many problems you would have ran into with the wheel hubs if this was x231.
Nice looking tractor. The only thing that iritates me is the lack of ROPS on older tractors in the US. In Germany most tractors were retrofited with ROPS in the 1960s.
I didn't understand your desire to swap out the Norden front wheels for the IH factory setup/weights, but after seeing the proper wheels on I now understand. That brings me to a question, why did you choose to assemble the wheels on the tractor vs on the bench and then install the tire, rim, hub and weight as one? As always thanks for the video Squatch.
Having the hub, tire, and weight all assembled as one unit makes it too heavy and cumbersome to achieve a good installation, plus makes it a lot more difficult to get a “feel” of the bearing settings. Plus remember the tin grease shields we put in behind the hub bearing races, many times I’ve found those to be bent and distorted from people trying to line up an overly heavy hub&wheel assembly on a spindle because they didn’t take enough of it apart to create a good working situation - they would hang the tin shields on the leading end of the spindle and damage them because the wheel assembly was too heavy for them to notice what was going on 👍
It had one on it before we restored it, but Senior decided to take it off because we don’t need 2-way hydraulic control for anything that we hook this tractor to 👍
Hey up, those wheels really do finish off the look on the M so much more balanced now, how heavy are the wheel weights. All those colours ov green this time of year just beautiful mate
Weird seeing a tube without talcum powder. In my area, we'd drown it in t.p. because it lets the tube do as it pleases without chafing inside the tire and it's good for dismissing moisture. And i'm not joking. I usually buy a bottle of the stuff, put one half in one tire, put one half in the other. Very good for when you let the pressure a bit low for softer soils as well. edit: this has to be one of the most beautiful Super Ms i've ever seen. Impeccable taste in all the options and color choice.

That M was a superb tractor restoration before the latest updates 🤔 reckon now that tractor is second to none absolutely stunning 👌👌
Fantastic video Toby! What a difference those front rims made. The big pulley looking great on it. That super M is a beautiful tractor. Cheers
I like those wheels a lot better. It just seems "right". She's got a real pretty stance in that evening light.
The new silver rims look great against that pretty red paint.👍👍
Wonderful upgrade, just loving the silver accents on the wheels .

Definitely a nice new old tractor!!!
Looks great. It looked great before but the upgrades do set it off well. Thanks for the video 👍
Wheels look fantastic. So does the rest of the Super M. Very nice.
4:34 , Oh yeah, baby. It fits.! No grease seal mods to do.

The wheels and pulley look great. It’s amazing how a couple of improvements can make such a big difference. Very enjoyable video Toby. Thanks
I'm surprised Senior didn't take the M out to break in those new tires first! 🤠
Thanks for using Luke’s favorite tool to adjust those bearings.
I got a few used wheel weights from the tire shop and pounded them in just to confuse people. Told a couple of guys that I had them balanced. Ellis
I am surprized at how little grease was on the hub you took apart.
I cleaned most of it out in the first episode, when I took that hub off the first time to do all of the bearing checks.

Love the close up of the IH logo at the start!
good looking tractor, good job on the paint,
It may not be necessary but I like it pack a little extra grease in the space between the bearings just because why not.
I don’t expect that I am the only viewer who added the clicks from your torque “wrench.”
Love the universal hammer being used to remove the spindle nut, lol

Now that's what I'm talking about I agree completely 3:03
The IH front weights are only cast and drilled for the 3-bolt mounting, so they wouldn’t work on the Norden wheels with the 4-bolt pattern.
Oh yeah, Duh. For some reason I thought I saw 4 stand bolts when the weights were sitting there painted. There may have never been weights to fit those rims. Now I understand more why you did all the effort to cross bearings and do the swap.

Awsome job. I love that tractor. I have the exact same one. I can’t wait to get mine looking that good.

Interesting Squatch, you set bearings with preload and not end float as specified by Timken?
New bearings require preload (although very light with wheel bearings) because of the "wearing in" process that will happen early on. A slight preload on brand-new bearings will ensure a proper zero-end float with little to no preload once everything wears in.
The Zeus pulley looks good on there, almost like it was meant to be. Can’t imagine how many problems you would have ran into with the wheel hubs if this was x231.
