Los Angeles California is far worse than that. Very dangerous, the homeless are usually out of their mind. You can definitely find drugs, but you won’t make friends. Fun fact: Little Tokyo in Los Angeles is only 3mins away from skid row, but it very clean and safe, surprisingly.
It's funny our money is more valuable than Japan now. B4 Japan's money was more valuable but because we got inflation and depression going on this is way affordable
They look happy, I hope they don't get over runned by tourists and all their vending machines and eateries become over priced. Then the police would come and chase all the locals away because it's now a tourist attraction. 😞
I stayed in Nishinari for 3 nights by myself (female) and then another week with my partner. There were homeless people and plenty of drinking but I never felt unsafe. I shopped at the same grocery store, was never bothered or harassed and even got a few smiles. In my 2 months in Japan this was an area I was fondest of and would definitely stay there again. A local told us this whole area has improved a lot over the last 10 years because of tourists coming in and some TH-camrs showing a more positive side.
well Chinese here, most Asians are afraid of the law, because the government can do whatever to the people, so we are very careful to stay out crimes that would get us in trouble. Western countries, where people are presumed innocent until proven guilty, is more likely to risk law. I still chose to immigrate to America though, because living in US is still better over all.

I've lived, been homeless, and spent countless days awake, fearing for my things, myself, and others around me. This is literally NOTHING like places i've stayed at or visited. You can't even talk to people without them spitting, cussing, or pulling something out on you if you have anything of value. It took me 2 days of staying in certain places where i get kicked out, stolen from, or literally stalked, hit, or having a gun pulled for being in the wrong area at the wrong time. Feces on the ground, the rancid smell of rotting, drugs, and hygiene. You really have no idea and are probably and luckily ignorant towards the experience other than walking through places, saying that you've 'been there'. I'm happy for you, but don't say things you don't know. Be grateful of what you have and who you are. Some of us lose ourselves and have to constantly move in fear for our lives.

I’ve never been to Japan. But if this is the “worse part of town”, then it must be a really great place in general. I’m saying this as an Icelandic person that grew up in Denmark and have also lived for two years in Amsterdam (2008-09). I then also lived in Berlin from 2014-19. The nice areas there are more “run down” than the place you went to 😆

I stayed in Nishinari-ku twice. And honestly, it feels much safer than my hometown. For around 700円 per night, with wi-fi, close access to station, and a small public onsen, it was incredible. Lots of cheap, tasty foods and shops too around too. The only downside was, the walls are thin. Imagine trying to sleep at 3am and the person next door ripped out a loud, hearty, echoing fart. My sleepiness is immediately replaced with a mad attempt to hold my laughter in.
Thank you for showing such an unfiltered view of Japan. Doesn't matter where you go they really are the most welcoming and kindhearted people in the world. Met so many Japanese from all different ages in different regions and once you break the language barrier they truly open up. Unforgettable experiences
I lived there in the early 2000's, homeless everywhere, cheap food, Yakuza always floating around, smell of piss permiates the air and I LOVED the place, so much history and character. Never any issues, it's its own community and there's a sense of pride for those that arent homeless who have loived there their whole lives. I just went there last month to visit with my family, first time back in over 20 years and surprised to see how much it has been cleaned up and kind of a tourist area. Nishinari ku ROCK"S!

One is dangerous due to over dramatization from a rather docile society, And the other is dangerous because theres literally a 1.2 homicides per day. Japan AS A WHOLE has a violent crime rate of 0.7/100,000 people, where as Chicago, A single CITY mind you has 53.8/100,000....

I think Japanese have so much respect for others. Seeing how there were no trash bins, yet no litter, is amazing. At the top of my street is a community garbage can, and people still litter within 10 feet of it. It's crazy.
Bro I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn NYC. What you just presented is a not dangerous, it’s just poor. You didn’t get robbed or cursed out or beat up stabbed or shot. Hell I’d move to Airin RIGHT NOW and marvel at how nice the place is.
Having lived in San Francisco, this is like the nice parts and I'm not even exaggerating. I would have no qualms about walking through this neighborhood, the uncles hanging around the vending machines and shanties are way friendlier than their American equivalents that are pretty likely to meet you with a weapon if you approach their camp site.
This was such a respectful and insightful video. Thank you for showing that even if you are poor it doesn't mean that you are dangerous. You were kind and caring to those you met and treated them like human beings- you didn't use this as an example to say bad things about a community. Keep up the good work!!
It’s nice to see this side of Japan. I refuse to travel to generic, sanitized cities. I grew up in San Francisco. I want to see the edges. This makes me want to go to Japan more.
Wish u talk longer with the people on the street, it’s alright to let the video run longer into hours with you interview the elderly. Kinda interested to listen to their stories like the one who used to work for Toshiba in overseas and how he ended up alone etc. We can learn a lot from them too. All life experiences are gold be it good or bad experience. And they seems happy to talk to you and don’t mind the filming. Overall, great video, I enjoy watching another side of Japan that usually don’t show up on other main stream videos
So much heart in this video. This is the cleanest skid row in the world. Even the unsightly scrap refrigerators and washing machines look clean and not exactly condemned. Helps that it is not a hot sauna like SIngapore but surely in the summer, this is when this dumping ground will become infested with rats and other vermin.
I've stayed in that area, I actually felt safe there and didn't feel as threatened as my own home town. Yes it can get dirty, and there's older rough people who hang around drinking and smoking all day, but aside from that, I'd go back lol.
it is nice that you treated the less fortunate with respect. I live in finland and I have also talked to the local addicts on the streets sometimes and it means a world to them that they are treated as people.
Love this episode! Debunking the myth of Nishinari. I was there couple of months ago, i knew i reached the 'skid row' of Japan when i saw a homeless man pissing on the sidewalk. Other than that incident, It is still relatively clean and orderly. Tobita Sinchi the redlight district was right beside it and feels tidier than our Geylang.

I traveled to Japan for vacation since the late 80s, never have I been disturbed or accosted by the local, it’s always very fun to just walk around. But now Japan is too crowded, especially Tokyo and Osaka, will try to visit other parts of Japan.
Thanks for sharing and showing us your many different experiences especially with other people. A few years ago I was most fortunate to be one of many guests of Mitsubishi for a week staying mostly in Tokyo this trip made a great impression upon me, I was amazed by the wonderful politeness of Japanese people not only to myself but also to each other. I remember thinking that it would be a wonderful experience to live there for a short time. The 40 degree heat was difficult at times to cope with due to time deadlines that we had to stick to and I really made use of all the drink machines for water. I lived in Nishinari for two months and walked around in those slums even at night. I think from a foreigner perspective it is the safest place I‘ve ever been to outside of japan. I‘m saying that as a foreigner but I think that those videos make that place bad and giving it a reputation that it doesn‘t have at all.
I stayd in this part of Osaka last year and I loved it! Seriously, compared to any European major city, the most dangerous slum in Japan feels COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY SAFE. I never noticed anything strange during the week I lived in this area.
I stayed in Nishinari for a week as my home base when traveling through Osaka and Kyoto. I loved this area. While it did have more homeless, graffiti, pachinko parlors, and people walking around drunk than some of the other areas of Japan I have been to; I still felt extremely safe in the house I rented and while walking around, even after late nights of drinking. Bonus points for the cheap food and drinks in the area. I have fond memories of getting to know and drink with locals even with my broken Japanese. Would 100% stay in the area again during my next trip, and would recommend to other travelers without children.
Most homeless people are actually very nice humble folks, they’ve been through a lot and a little kindness goes a long way. Also, I hope those sauces on the walls weren’t mammal sauces.
@@tootersshow5936 There are many homeless who don't contact their family and friends out of pride or simply don't want to burden them. Some are orphans and don't have anyone to rely on. Are you Christian?
@@porkcutlet3920You got it twisted up. It's the other way around, although there are homeless that don't contact their families due to pride, etc, like you said, those are actually the minority. I'd say 30% are like that, the other 70% are really insufferable and generally terrible people who have burned bridges with family and friends. Ask me how I know. I spent 10 years in the streets in the early 2000s when I was a teen, up until 2011. I can tell you have a really naive point of view. Go live in the streets for 6 months and tell us your experience goofy.
I have been there (Nishinari) and stayed for 30 days (because it costs me only S$300 for the 30 days) and I share your experience. I would stay there again in the cheap hostel except for the bedbugs after my 10th night. But I'm now used to the bedbugs and they don't scare me now. But I take every precaution not to bring the bedbugs back with me to Singapore.
I'm not surprised about them rejecting short stays. There are old men and strange people who live long term in hostels. So it makes it unwelcome for tourists.

I stayed in this general area 14 years ago for a week during my 1st trip to Osaka primarily because it's cheap & was aware of it being the supposed 'skid row' but discovered its full of heart & never once felt unsafe. It's one of my fondest memory of traveling in Japan. I even enjoyed several solitary walks from the city (once after a gig) back to my hotel at 2am 🤗 I'll definitely be back in this neighborhood if get back to Osaka again & will try out that 8am Izakaya!
I accidentally stayed near shim-immimiya without knowing, and at no point did I feel unsafe. I was young, and stupid at the time and walked through the area multiple times drunker than shit after midnight and I was totally fine. It was dirty and that’s it surprisingly, I never felt scared.
Been there, done it and only after wards think it was stupid. I think the young and stupid are sometimes tolerated but also nice to see them. I mean would an adult be mean to a 3 year old but probably you weren't worth mugging.

Nice and rare to see a hotel room where it allows you to open windows. Stayed at a few where they jammed or locked the windows. Some research on the internet seems to indicate it is to stop people from committing suicide...
This video has me in a whirlwind of emotions. But when you got to that hotel I lol so hard especially when you kept talking about the sauces on the wall. Loved this video ! It was different from other views of Japan videos and I learned something new😊

Thank you for the video! This place reminds me enormously of where I grew up (east Nashville, TN). It was rumored to be dirty and dangerous, but it was actually full of some of the friendliest and most genuine people I've ever met. If I'm ever lucky enough to visit Japan, Airin will be the first place I go.
The fact that the vending machines sell what seems to be alcohol and yet no one breaks them just shows that it's not dangerous therez just lower class with different standards and less taboos
I stayed in Hotel Raizen years ago when traveling extra cheap which was basically the outskirts of Nishinari Ward. Honestly there were signs that it was quite shady (ie. beer vending machines everywhere, men in messy suits having full on drinks at 8am in the morning.), but it was honestly one of the best stays I had.
host reminds me of my buddy i grew up with in Seattle, who was born in Japan and moved over here when he was about 6 or 7. the way he speaks, his sense of humor and all. he ended up going off to school on the east coast then moving back to Japan. this made me miss him. it's always been a dream of mine to visit Japan, but unfortunately it's so expensive that I'm not sure if I'll ever get to in this lifetime. what an awesome introspective for those of us who may never get to see it.

Im from Puerto Rico and basically every town is like this, most people are warm and welcoming. I find that people in the city are more reserved because they are always busy and rushing. I just wish people in my country didnt litter as much
Having been to Japan nearly half a dozen times I’ve never felt I’ve ever been in danger, having said this as a general rule ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings and like he said be RESPECTFUL and especially in someone else’s country!!

I've been to Chicago and Los Angeles, I've been to some places in Mexico, I lived in Costa Rica for 12 years and visited some places not even the cops want to go to... so, the Airin area of Nishinari looks lovely in comparison.

I was there. Heard that it was the most dangerous place in Japan but it’s as ‘dangerous’ as Yishun if you know what I mean. I was around the area in the morning and decided to check out the place for myself to see how dangerous can it be. But was caught by surprise by the nearby red light district.

I would have no qualms about walking through this neighborhood, the uncles hanging around the vending machines and shanties are way friendlier than their American equivalents that are pretty likely to meet you with a weapon if you approach their camp site.

It’s nice to see this side of Japan. I refuse to travel to generic, sanitized cities. I grew up in San Francisco. I want to see the edges. This makes me want to go to Japan more.
Wish u talk longer with the people on the street, it’s alright to let the video run longer into hours with you interview the elderly. Kinda interested to listen to their stories like the one who used to work for Toshiba in overseas and how he ended up alone etc. We can learn a lot from them too. All life experiences are gold be it good or bad experience. And they seems happy to talk to you and don’t mind the filming.
Overall, great video, I enjoy watching another side of Japan that usually don’t show up on other main stream videos

So much heart in this video. This is the cleanest skid row in the world. Even the unsightly scrap refrigerators and washing machines look clean and not exactly condemned. Helps that it is not a hot sauna like SIngapore but surely in the summer, this is when this dumping ground will become infested with rats and other vermin.

I've stayed in that area, I actually felt safe there and didn't feel as threatened as my own home town. Yes it can get dirty, and there's older rough people who hang around drinking and smoking all day, but aside from that, I'd go back lol.
it is nice that you treated the less fortunate with respect. I live in finland and I have also talked to the local addicts on the streets sometimes and it means a world to them that they are treated as people.

I was there couple of months ago, i knew i reached the 'skid row' of Japan when i saw a homeless man pissing on the sidewalk.
Other than that incident, It is still relatively clean and orderly. Tobita Sinchi the redlight district was right beside it and feels tidier than our Geylang.
People who have the least are the friendliest and kindest. That's a universal rule.

I traveled to Japan for vacation since the late 80s, never have I been disturbed or accosted by the local, it’s always very fun to just walk around. But now Japan is too crowded, especially Tokyo and Osaka, will try to visit other parts of Japan.
Hokkaido is not crowded.

A few years ago I was most fortunate to be one of many guests of Mitsubishi for a week staying mostly in Tokyo this trip made a great impression upon me, I was amazed by the wonderful politeness of Japanese people not only to myself but also to each other. I remember thinking that it would be a wonderful experience to live there for a short time.
The 40 degree heat was difficult at times to cope with due to time deadlines that we had to stick to and I really made use of all the drink machines for water. I lived in Nishinari for two months and walked around in those slums even at night. I think from a foreigner perspective it is the safest place I‘ve ever been to outside of japan. I‘m saying that as a foreigner but I think that those videos make that place bad and giving it a reputation that it doesn‘t have at all.
I stayd in this part of Osaka last year and I loved it! Seriously, compared to any European major city, the most dangerous slum in Japan feels COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY SAFE. I never noticed anything strange during the week I lived in this area.
I stayed in Nishinari for a week as my home base when traveling through Osaka and Kyoto. I loved this area. While it did have more homeless, graffiti, pachinko parlors, and people walking around drunk than some of the other areas of Japan I have been to; I still felt extremely safe in the house I rented and while walking around, even after late nights of drinking. Bonus points for the cheap food and drinks in the area. I have fond memories of getting to know and drink with locals even with my broken Japanese. Would 100% stay in the area again during my next trip, and would recommend to other travelers without children.

Most homeless people are actually very nice humble folks, they’ve been through a lot and a little kindness goes a long way. Also, I hope those sauces on the walls weren’t mammal sauces.
No they are not. If none of your family and friends are willing to give you a place to stay you are probably an insufferable person

@@porkcutlet3920You got it twisted up. It's the other way around, although there are homeless that don't contact their families due to pride, etc, like you said, those are actually the minority. I'd say 30% are like that, the other 70% are really insufferable and generally terrible people who have burned bridges with family and friends. Ask me how I know. I spent 10 years in the streets in the early 2000s when I was a teen, up until 2011. I can tell you have a really naive point of view. Go live in the streets for 6 months and tell us your experience goofy.
I have been there (Nishinari) and stayed for 30 days (because it costs me only S$300 for the 30 days) and I share your experience. I would stay there again in the cheap hostel except for the bedbugs after my 10th night. But I'm now used to the bedbugs and they don't scare me now. But I take every precaution not to bring the bedbugs back with me to Singapore.
I'm not surprised about them rejecting short stays. There are old men and strange people who live long term in hostels. So it makes it unwelcome for tourists.

I stayed in this general area 14 years ago for a week during my 1st trip to Osaka primarily because it's cheap & was aware of it being the supposed 'skid row' but discovered its full of heart & never once felt unsafe. It's one of my fondest memory of traveling in Japan. I even enjoyed several solitary walks from the city (once after a gig) back to my hotel at 2am 🤗 I'll definitely be back in this neighborhood if get back to Osaka again & will try out that 8am Izakaya!
I accidentally stayed near shim-immimiya without knowing, and at no point did I feel unsafe. I was young, and stupid at the time and walked through the area multiple times drunker than shit after midnight and I was totally fine. It was dirty and that’s it surprisingly, I never felt scared.
Been there, done it and only after wards think it was stupid. I think the young and stupid are sometimes tolerated but also nice to see them. I mean would an adult be mean to a 3 year old but probably you weren't worth mugging.

Nice and rare to see a hotel room where it allows you to open windows. Stayed at a few where they jammed or locked the windows. Some research on the internet seems to indicate it is to stop people from committing suicide...

Thank you for the video! This place reminds me enormously of where I grew up (east Nashville, TN). It was rumored to be dirty and dangerous, but it was actually full of some of the friendliest and most genuine people I've ever met. If I'm ever lucky enough to visit Japan, Airin will be the first place I go.

I stayed in Hotel Raizen years ago when traveling extra cheap which was basically the outskirts of Nishinari Ward. Honestly there were signs that it was quite shady (ie. beer vending machines everywhere, men in messy suits having full on drinks at 8am in the morning.), but it was honestly one of the best stays I had.
host reminds me of my buddy i grew up with in Seattle, who was born in Japan and moved over here when he was about 6 or 7. the way he speaks, his sense of humor and all. he ended up going off to school on the east coast then moving back to Japan. this made me miss him. it's always been a dream of mine to visit Japan, but unfortunately it's so expensive that I'm not sure if I'll ever get to in this lifetime. what an awesome introspective for those of us who may never get to see it.

Im from Puerto Rico and basically every town is like this, most people are warm and welcoming. I find that people in the city are more reserved because they are always busy and rushing. I just wish people in my country didnt litter as much

I was there. Heard that it was the most dangerous place in Japan but it’s as ‘dangerous’ as Yishun if you know what I mean. I was around the area in the morning and decided to check out the place for myself to see how dangerous can it be.
But was caught by surprise by the nearby red light district.
