    Any idea how well this will hold up to very cold temperatures during winter months? I'm considering this exact project to hold a canoe (bottom) and two kayaks above. I'd use end caps to prevent water from entering and cover the entire thing with a quality tarp while everything remains outside. My main concern is if the plastic ABS can tolerate the cold while supporting that kind of load?

    • @RayStein
      @RayStein  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I left my kayak rack outside in cold temps. It has held up great. There is a flexibility to the kayak rack that has prevented any problems. I did not use glue so it can expand and contract without breaking. It holds canoes, kayaks and gear no problem. It's only issue is you can only move it around when no weight is on it. Otherwise it starts coming apart but it goes back together easily.

      Thanks so much! When I first saw one of these Kayak racks it was a bit overwhelming trying to recreate it but it seemed like a great idea so I figured ...why not film it? I just used it again two days ago. I still love having it! It saves on space, it's light, moveable, and holds my Kayaks and other stuff in the garage.

    What a great video, so easy to follow and I love the parts list, made cutting so much easier. I used a chop saw to cut the pieces, made fast work of it! I added a level so I could put 4 kayaks on it, and I also used PVC Caps on all four ends, top and bottom, which helps make it super stable on loose gravel and to keep water from filling up the pipes. Thank you!

    Thanks for your video. This ended up being the perfect solution for me. Have two kayaks and making a shelf for the top to store all my related accessories. Using off-site storage and the ability to break it down quickly if needed sold me. Thanks for taking the time. $108, plus a large PVC cutter which made the job go much quicker.

    • @RayStein
      @RayStein  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I leave mine outside uncovered upside down in Pennsylvania but a large tarp would work as well. I've never had a problem but I've only been doing it for 10 years. Long term a cover makes more sense the more I think about it.

    Hope this is correct, for a cheaper but same setup with only two rows...
    Converted into feet as some places sell PVC in feet
    & of course.. if its just one kayak just divide everything bellow in HALF!
    TWO RACK KAYAK
    (4) 58 inch 1.5 inch pvc = 19.33ft
    (8) 3 inch 1.5 inch pvc = 2ft (CAN ADD MORE FOR TOP CAPS)
    (4) 17 inch 1.5 inch pvc = 11.33ft
    (4) 33inch 1.5 inch pvc = 11ft
    16 PVC TEES
    Total = 43.66ft
    Conclusion : 50ft of 1 1/2 PVC & 16 PVC TEES would be simply easiest to work with.

    Thanks, this is very helpful. I've cut the pieces with a chop saw (simple) and will assemble it per your plan. But since my rack will be located on sloping ground, after I assemble it I will hold up the low side and use a level and measuring tape to identify how big of legs I need to install under the low side. Having purchased 8, ten-foot pipes, there is more than enough left over to raise the low side up to make it level.

      Enjoy it! I'm so glad I bought a kayak. I own a small boat but never use it because the kayak is more fun and easier to move around. The stand is worth it too because of how much space it frees up. I have a Pelican and a 2 Perceptions now. Also, I saw a guy catching fish in a place only a kayak can go last year. Can't wait to head out again.

    It's true that the PVC fits very tightly, so that it "seems" at first that no glue is needed, but I've made several projects like this and have found that without glue they tend to come apart. Don't know whether it's temperature variations, or what, but most joints will eventually loosen and come loose when they've had weight/stress on them for a while. If that's ok with you, then don't use glue, but if you're concerned about that for any reason, use glue. Of course, it IS true that when glued you can't later disassemble them. Choices, choices. If it's to be used outside, I'd also put end caps on the bottom of the 4 "legs" so stays level and doesn't sink in the dirt, and on the top so it doesn't take on water. Good basic design though.

    • @RayStein
      @RayStein  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips! Last season was crazy with all the rain we had in the northeast. Everything was wet up here for at least 2 months straight so your design is a really good idea. So far I've been ok without the glue but it doesn't get very hot up here that often. I wonder if blue thread seal would work since it can be taken apart.

      There is a HUGE difference. Ray Stein definitely knows the best way to do this and I would follow his instructions to the letter. Nice design ... I would copy except use 2" pipe ... I already have a couple pieces ... PVC pipe and fittings are not that cheap anymore ... current prices for 2" white schedule 40 PVC pipe 10' lengths is $17.74 x 8 = $141.92 ... 2" schedule 40 PVC "T" fitting is $4.95 x 24 = $118.80 ... total is $260.72 not including glue ... too expensive .. will have to rebuild wooden rack.

      Thanks for the tip. With how high prices have become we have to pick and choose carefully now.
