Clara Haskil was also a violinist. She and Arthur Grumiaux used to play duo recitals and would sometimes switch instruments halfway because Grumiaux was a pianist as well. Their recordings of the Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas are very highly regarded.
She and the other great pianists lived during the world's worst troubled times enduring several wars. Yet one never senses those life-demoralising situations in her playing. That's the beauty of their art and philosophy of their day. So detached from reality yet so beautiful and so warm as real humans in a real world. I think that in this context one can say literally that music is a refuge. Wonderful impeccable playing!
A gem of a performance...it sings, sparkles and delights like no one else's, not even Richter's. Everything that Clara Haskil touched she enriched and ennobled. Her Mozart was unsurpassed, her Beethoven and Schubert too--I can't help it, I just worship this woman! The tragedy of her untimely death in 1960 was at least mitigated by the precious legacy of the incomparable recordings of her playing that she left us...the world would be so much poorer without them!
An esteemed friend of Haskil, Charles Chaplin, described her talent by saying "In my lifetime I have met three geniuses; Professor Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Clara Haskil. I am not a trained musician but I can only say that her touch was exquisite, her expression wonderful, and her technique extraordinary." (Swiss Radio interview, 19 April 1961.) wikipedia
What a great pianist and musician...one of my top 10. Her Career was sadly interrupted by Scoliosis early on and of course by her ultimate death at 1960.
I studied these variations when I was 18 or 19 and recorded them----- for my own pleasure only. well, jumping ahead 45 plus years I just had them transferred to CD. I am so jealous of Clara Haskil...my performance falls so short! I may never listen to my recording again! Anyway, Clara Haskil was one of the all-time greats and I worship her ability. I wish that she had recorded many more sonatas of Beethoven. I also wish that performances of Liszt and Franck were available...
She did play it (It is known that she learned it in one week along with Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, back when she was a student of Gulda in Vienna), but no recording exists.
A wonderful interpretation. In spite of a difficult life and poverty. God bless her soul.

Didn't know. Thanks.

Haskil makes this ridiculously difficult Schumann sound as simple and effortless as Mozart!
Now I can live one more day. So free and full of joy. Merci inf.

One of my favorite piano recordings. Thanks!
Another excellent proof that Clara Haskil was so much more then the best Mozart interpreter ever. Great clarity.
I didn't know it was possible to play runs with so much lucidity - thanks so much for putting this peerless performance on youtube
Clara Haskil: one of the best of all the times, no doubt!
such incandescence on such an intimate scale...
Well, I just listened Kissin's version and thought that's the best..And now it's changed. This is legend.
Unbelievable, fantastic performance!
Totally brilliant!
I don't believe in "best" performances -- but this is certainly one of the most delightful and sublime recordings of this piece!
Thanks so much for this exquisite posting.
The best ABEGG, no doubts!
Merci de diffuser ça !
Magnifique !
Un adevărat talent!
Абсолютно гениально!!! Потрясающее мастерство и свежесть интерпретации!!!

Stunning
She is still no match for such a clear and inspired performance...
Very well said, thanks.
I agree with xulia1001.
it's beyond words!
Without doubt, the finest Abegg Variations we will hear. Did Argerich ever play or record it?

This superb piano playing she was a favorite of Einstein- she sorta looks like him :)
