Bonito was a prize fish for us in so cal when I was a kid. Schools would come through on the piers and everyone would pop out their bonito setups. I love them.
That’s a “Leaping Bonito” which we had raw in a similar way with sushi rice on some Nori, was pretty nice! Definitely a fish that needs to be bled well and that blood line can be strong. Tried a normal Bonito the same way and either we didn’t get the blood out, or it’s just a stronger flavour but wasn’t a fan of that one. The colours and that white splash on the dorsal fin is awesome, such a pretty fish.
Interesting, thanks mate. I actually had the surgeon & grassy the next two days and left the bonito for too long with blood line in and went super fishy smell…. Heading on a mission tomorrow, hopefully turn it into some snapper 🤞
Relaxing is the biggest thing. It sounds so simple but it really is the biggest thing from my experience. Some days I won’t be relaxed and I’ll be going down to the bottom and will already feel the urge to breathe lol. It can also take me some dives to get into that relaxed state. Start by slowing down your breathing & relax all your muscles and just be calm. Then dive and try stay calm and relaxed (slow movements) also stay on surface 3 x as long as your bottom time before your next dive.
