  • We take a look at Cumbria's three preserved railways. First off we look at the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, running from the shores of Lake Windermere to Haverthwaite. We take a look at the railways motive power including the solo surviving pair of LMS Fairburn Tank engines 42073 & 42085. The L&HR's industrial locomotives featured include Bagnall's Princess & Victor. We also take a look at Princess' visit to Preston (to the Ribble Steam Railway)
Next, we move to a much smaller scale, to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, running from the coast into the hills. Locomotives featured including Whillan Beck, River Mite, River Irt, Synolda and Northern Rock.
Finally, we take a look at the Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum, taking a look at their home-based locomotive Sir Tom and some footage from photo charters held on the line. One of the highlights of the museum is their collection of excavators, including the Ruston Proctor Steam Shovel, we see that in action in this video.

With my move to a 4K camera in 2018, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for a series of compilation videos with my archived pre 4K material. Steaming Along is a series of compilation videos looking at the key locations and locomotives on some of Britain's best preserved railways.
This is the first episode of series 2 of Steaming Along, continuing a look before I moved 4K. This series will have episodes focused on Main Line Steam, Capital Steam, the Lake District, the North East, the South and the Great Little Trains of Wales.
    Series 2:
Capital Steam - • Steaming Along: Capita...
Main Line Steam - • Steaming Along: Main L...

I've never understood why they run so slowly at the L&HR?

I imagine it's because the line is 3.2 miles long & to run at full line speed of 25mph it would take about 8 minutes to get from end to end. Arguably that wouldn't be the most thrilling train ride.

Yeah because it’s a tourist line and it’s sharp in some places.

It’s slow short and beautiful. Deal with it.
