  • Takehiro Gaja is a 9th dan master of Uechi-ryu Karate, with a passion for teaching those with the right heart, and passing on Okinawan culture to the next generation.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on TH-cam, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views.
Visit the blog to learn how you can support Series Two. Coming in 2022!
    travel67.com/t...
    GOALS OF THE SERIES
    1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
    2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
    3. Store the original data as an archival record.
    4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
    5. Make the videos available for free online via TH-cam and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.
The international karate community generously supported the first series.

Thank you for all the positive comments. We're about to start filming Series Two, and need help from the international martial arts community to do it.

I can't help but think that I'm missing some of his finer details when the captions stay the same for about 2 minutes yet he keeps talking. That said, I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and hope you keep preserving these treasures. Thank you very much!

Very important to hear those interviews with lifelong experiences. I think young people rarely understand the value of wisdom found in older people with good humane background.
The translation subtitles stop at the end and he keeps talking for minutes at a critical moment.

Thanks a lot for your work! At the beginning of the video there is a photograph of another master wearing a dark gi holding a pair of rounded knives. Those weapons are known as Deer horn knives or Mandarin Duck knives in Baguazhang Kung Fu. Can you please identify the master in the picture, his school and any information you may have in connection with that weapon from the Okinawan karate / kobudo perspective?
