      The thing with Luis is. By the time he left Madrid in summer 06 he won 2 la ligas and a ucl with them. The same exact trophies that Barça won from 2000 till 2006. If he had stayed he would’ve won the same trophies with Barça and maybe more with his help without the hatred from Barça fans

      @@DanRenoyasFootballStories Would you consider (in the future) doing a piece on Soviet / Ukrainian manager Lobanovsky and how he was one of the first managers to bring mathematics, diets, physical trainings and versatility into the game to great effects? Ancelotti was in awe of this man and his team. Given how the USSR was heavily said to have been involved in doping athletes, one could only wonder if the Soviet national football team under his helm were beneficiaries.

    What is interesting about Sol Campbell, is that he's considered a worse betrayal than Luis Figo. While, yes, both Tottenham and Barcelona failed to win many trophies during the aftermath of those transfers, Barcelona's problems were because president Gaspard became paranoic and began to put huge clauses on poor transfers. They did recive a world record fee at the end of the day.With Tottenham, they simply didn't had anyone near the level of Campbell.

    • @DanRenoyasFootballStories
      @DanRenoyasFootballStories  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      That’s very true Da Stoof. The parallels between the two transfers are very interesting. I personally feel that Campbell’s was the worse betrayal given his history with Tottenham and the fact he left for nothing. Hope you enjoy the video mate

      Ha, Arsenal can have him, sols problem now is that he is not revered as a legend at Arsenal, they don't invite him back for anything, at Spurs, he would have still been around the club now. Ledly King had a troublesome career and barely played for Spurs due to injuries but is seen as a legend and is an ambassador still still now.

      @@DanRenoyasFootballStories Great work as always Dan, I find the combination of Dean and Wenger somehow reflected in our current pairing of Edu and Arteta, same vibes and I think that's why Arsenal slowly crawled back to the top.
      On a pure banter side - let's face it, Sol actually made Spurs a favor leaving for free, considering how Levy mismanaged funds earned for Modric and Bale years later.

    Given Campbell's success at Arsenal, it has largely been forgotten that he struggled at Arsenal initially. He had been used to hoofing the ball out of danger at Spurs. At Arsenal he was expected to win tackles and then keep possession. For the first three months, he often seemed to be caught between two minds. The turning point was his first visit back to Spurs in an Arsenal shirt. Despite the hostility, Campbell probably found an away derby at Spurs easier to handle from a technical point of view. Even Wenger would accept that at times the ball just needed clearing out of the penalty area. Campbell was outstanding and went on from strength to strength.

    You have an instinctive way with words, and it's very fun and itches a superbly particular niche of my brain, at the intersection between my love for well-narrated documentaries, history, and football. That said, I would recommend pacing the videos slightly tighter. Not too much since it'll lose the specific flair of sounding like a fireside story on Christmas eve, but just enough that the flow isn't lost because of the time taken to move from topic to topic (this is more of something I observed on the Calciopoli video than here, but pointing it out regardless). Great video, as always, and thoroughly looking forward to more! :]

    Sol Campbell's betrayal isn’t just one of the worst in football history-it’s an all-time low. But Arsenal’s desperation in snatching up a player so quick to stab his club in the back shows just how lacking in class they really are. Campbell won’t be remembered as a legend, just a sellout chasing cheap glory, while Arsenal’s willingness to embrace him only highlights their own pitiful standards. In the end, both Campbell and Arsenal come out looking pathetic.
    It’s ironic, really-Arsenal’s history is littered with players jumping ship for "glory" the moment they get a chance, from Nasri to Van Persie. Classless and cheap, just like the club itself. But then again, what more can you expect from a team that abandoned its roots in South London? Loyalty and integrity were never part of their DNA, so none of this should come as a surprise.

    Wow, what a great football documentary channel! A very well made documentary. I have no doubts Spurs fans will never forget and forgive Campbell. However, as a Gooner supporter, I actually forgave Ashley Cole left us after what David Dein had said about his departure and admitted that it was David's fault, and not Cole's fault. Cole was more ambitious and cared about his own future. His moves to The Bridge was eventually paid off. It's always difficult to judge until the truth comes out.

    Growing up Arsenal, I never paid close attention to the inner turmoil over at Spurs, so the backstory to Sol's decision is mostly new to me.
    I can only imagine how reporting to/negotiating with an arrogant and entitled buffoon like Alan Sugar would have grated on a sensitive young black superstar. Sugar's rants against "player power" hint at what an old-fashioned, hierarchical person he is: he saw himself as the boss and expected his employee Sol to come to heel and carry the water for Spurs when ordered. Years later he also put out horrible racist tweets that make you wonder what kind of attitudes he was privately showing young black millionaires in the 1990s.
    You can imagine how alluring it must've been to go and work for a progressive, patient, compassionate and fiercely loyal person like Arsene Wenger.

    I always thought Luis Figo leaving Barcelona for Real Madrid was the biggest betrayal, now after watching this video I'm convinced otherwise, Sol Campbell's departure to Arsenal was the greatest betrayal in the history of football.

    • @DanRenoyasFootballStories
      @DanRenoyasFootballStories  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks mate I really appreciate that. I can’t make up my mind who’s worse. The political history between Barcelona and Real is really deep and Barca fans felt Figo betrayed a culture, which I think is fair. On the other hand he’s not Catalan so it’s a question of whether the history was his burden to carry. The history between Spurs and Arsenal is mainly football with culture and social issues a smaller part of it. But Campbell was a Spurs fan and was developed by the club. There are so many ways of looking at both situations it’s hard to come to a definitive conclusion. But that’s what we love about the game! Thanks for watching mate, all the best

Even so, my style is quite similar to yours and seeing your content fills me with joy. Talking about football of the past is harder each day due to the sheer amount of different stories and the organizations making them, the introduction of Cristiano and Messi into football makes talking about anyone other than them something very difficult.

    I feel like Figo might have signed something that at the time might have felt like free money, since Florentino Perez was the underdog in that presidential race. On one hand, Sol Campbell's story felt like all his actions were more deliberate, on the other hand he had every right and reason to feel betrayed by the club. I can empathize if from there on, it was all business for him. One could argue that he could've easily justify going to Juventus. However, Arsenal offered more money and convenience. He was able to stay in London and not have to deal with a different language.
    I really enjoy how your videos add context a nuance to these remarkable stories.

      Thank you Paulo I really appreciate that. I'm a big football geek and love the nuances and different perspectives on stories like this so I'm really glad you appreciated it.
      I think you're absolutely right, neither situation is black and white. I was saying to another viewer that ultimately, with the Campbell situation, both sides are right. He was doing what was in his best personal and professional interests but in doing so, he had to betray the Spurs fans.
      Thanks for your comment my friend, I really do appreciate it. All the best mate

      @@DanRenoyasFootballStories That's a very eloquent and astute way of putting it.
      You bring up a very good point, the fans, which is what differentiates footballers from other non-team sports related professions. Bosses and higher ups often ask for commitment and ownership. However, when they don't reciprocate in the respect and commitment to the worker, they just tend to leave because the inspiration for that ownership is gone. Asking without inspiring is a sure way for companies to see their top talents leave them. However, fans add another layer of complexity that other professions don't have.
      The club asked him for commitment and ownership, but unfortunately did not manage to inspire any hope of winning titles. When he needed the club, they left him out to dry. The betrayal was exclusively to the fans, but I wonder if there was anything he could've done differently. Had he been more transparent, would that potentially hurt the possibility of making his ambitions become reality? Even it it didn't, was that his genuine concern?
