    Your biggest torque and fuel economy gain was the 4 valve head. We used to do big port sleeves, N-65s and A timing with the 2 valve heads, and that elminated most of the smoke, but the 4 valve head gave 2-3 MPG better fuel economy PLUS more torque. The fuel saving figure caused the owner to finally wake up to the fact that, with increased efficiency, better power AND no more smoke tickets, a full N series conversion with a new head would pay for itself within a year's normal operation. One thing they learned over time was that smokeless exhaust from the conversions increased engine life between rebuilds by roughly 100K miles. The 4104s were the busiest buses in the fleet and ran the most mileage, so the whole fleet got the treatment as they came up for rebuild. Only one of the 4103s got it. Being light compared to the 04, it became known as "The Rocket." Neither of the 3751s got it and were retired as the 4106s came in.

      michigandon..... I know what you mean.... and I have a personal "tie" with one of those "Old School Engineers" myself. I personally, studied Diesel Engine Design & Theory (as a prep for R&D work), specializing in 2 cycle diesels for 4 years back in the mid 1960s (1963 - 1967), and was fortunate to have come personal tutelage of Mr. P. Nicholas, who had just retired from GM Diesel Power (Detroit Diesel after 4/1965) at R&D.
      He was one of the original lead designers of the Very First 2 cycle prototype diesel engine - which was a 4-71, and I have a framed 8x10" B&W photo which he gave me after I came back from VN the last time in the fall of 1970.... of himself, "Boss" Kettering and a third engineer whom I've forgotten his name at the moment, that was taken just moments after the prototype was fired up for the very first time.... it's hanging on my wall, just above my desk here, as I'm typing this. I have been offered many hundreds for it, but it's not for sale and the Sentimental value of it for me, personally... is priceless!!

      I recall when I drove a Silver 92 435 hp back in 77/78 you had to kind of hold back on the downhill if you where about to go right back into climbing up the
      other side of say a river valley with a bridge at the bottom. If you held it back and had a little bit of throttle to go, you could start building boost pressure
      before you where into the climb. Otherwise you had a serious lag before the boost pressure came up. Keep in mind the blower is gear driven, and that
      in turn will control the exhaust flow coming out of the cylinders that spool up the exhaust turbine and hence the compressor wheel on the turbo.
      Try to keep the load constant for best results. I wonder if anyone ever tried putting a VGT on a 2 stroke Detroit ? I have a good 2v 6 cyl head ( core ) I’ll
      give away but I live near Toronto.

    A common add on with those fuel processors is a one way check valve on the fuel tank inlet line, fuel can enter the filter from the tank but it can't drain back. A big help when you do a filter change as well. The worse that can happen if you have a leaking filter housing is the filter empties you don't loose supply line prime. You must be using a lot more of the engines power now, horsepower needed to push a vehicle is not proportional to speed, double speed needs 4 times the power, that extra 4 mph is around a 5% increase in speed , you are using another 15% or so of engine power, those bigger tyres are helping a lot. Sounds like you need a faster rear axle if you are still managing to sit on the governor at 70mph

  • @familytraditiontransportat7951

    Replace the Clear dome on that fuel filter assembly. It's getting discolored and they're really not expensive - it'll give you new O rings and be crystal clear so you can see what's going on that much easier.

    I love those old buses and remember (I'm 71) as a kid you had to really hustle to keep up with the early mid 60's Greyhound/Detroit buses. They would get it. When Daddy ditched his 6 cyl. Chevy and got his first 283 that fixed that. But he was still amazed on the route up a major highway near by into a number of small communities pre interstate how those drivers would haul butt. At the last redlight before a long stretch of open road when the green came you would see the driver hammer down as evidenced by the exhaust note and smoke. Before you knew it he was doing 65-70 ~ or more (?!) and haulin! I loved it as a kid and your videos bring fond memories with dad, mom and I enjoying an afternoon of chasing a Greyhound up Hwy 43 with us all amazed how fast he could (and would) go!

    I recently moved back home to help my elderly father with things around his place, and came face to face with something I'd forgotten from my childhood: A mural off of old Dixie Highway with a Silversides featured prominently. I seem to recall you mentioning something about Lenny being on a route that included Chicago, and it dawned on me at the time that this mural might in fact be of him or one of his siblings, as the ol' Dixie is U.S. Route 1, and was likely part of that route. Though I can't confirm that, as I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to looking up old routes.

    I have to give you credit for being willing to hit the road and go anywhere in your old bus. Hell, I got a modern motorcoach and I get nervous taking it out. I guess knowing that I’m hauling passengers causes me concern about breakdowns. I love being on the road in a motorcoach. I had a completely different career for 30 years and started driving a motorcoach part time just to have something to do. I never thought I’d love it so much. There’s just something about seeing the sunrise come up in your windshield and the excitement of being somewhere you’ve never been before draws me to it, I wish I could’ve started my motorcoach business 20 years ago.
    I’m glad your bus is running well and I hope you stay safe on the road.

    Scott.... am quite sure (as I remember commenting to you, in another video a week or two ago), that even with a stock / factory turbo set-up... you realize that lots of internals (just about everything) will need to be changed.. unless when you rebuilt the engine that you used the full turbocharged "kit".... but then, if you did... your current "performance" level would "horrible" to say the least (not to mention - rolling coal), due to it still being NA at present. Which gear set are you running on your blower at present?
    The only option not necessitating all the turbocharged internals, would be if you're going with a low A/R turbo that is only yielding Up To about 7 or 8 psi (max) to the inlet side of the (NA) blower. Of course the 6-71 is capable of significantly higher outputs than what the factory specifications tell you.... if you're willing to "think outside the box", as I'm sure you realize.... yes? These engines are like the "small block Chevy" of diesel engines.... there is Lots of power to be had out of a small displacement engine.... the only "limiting" factor... as with many things in this life.... is how "deep" (or shallow) one's "pockets" are. ; )

    One thing you got to remember about a Detroit with a turbo is when you run it hard on a hot day you have to let it idle for about 5 to 10 minutes to let the Turbo cool down and stabilize the oil because overtime if you don't do that it will actually cause the bearings to fail.
    The other thing I heard about Detroit if they're not leaking oil you're out of oil LOL, love the sound of the two cycle Detroit now I drive a 500 horse Cummins

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glen G..... that should be remembered with All turbocharged diesels, not just DD's..... and it's more about allowing the Turbo, time to cool down as well as the oil.... you don't want a "Hot" turbo still spinning at thousands of rpm with No oil flow.... it Will, cost you at some point.

    • @aaronhumphrey2009
      @aaronhumphrey2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Add an auxiliary electric oil pump to1- pre pressurize engine bearings before startups. 2- put a two minute 'on' timer to turn it on to cool off the turbo bearings after engine shut-off. Your turbo should last much longer, maybe the life of the engine. A variable vane turbo would probably work best for this- it reduces turbo lag, feels like you get more torque in the lower RPM range. Add an intercooler, alcohol/ water injection,and you'll double the peak HP and keep it cool running. 😉😎

    • @UncaDave
      @UncaDave 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have to do this with turbocharged air-cooled aircraft engines. After you land you run it at the very least 5 mi utes to allow cooling. I allowed 10 minutes, 5 minutes slow taxi and 5 at about 1200 rpm before shutdown. The problem you get if you don’t is the oil bakes onto the turbine shaft and then that baked on residue begins to chew up the bearing

  • @lukestrasser
    @lukestrasser 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Scott, really glad to hear that the 4v head was an improvement even without the turbo. One has to think that Detroit made the switch for a reason since a vast number of 6-71N 4v engines were made without a turbo that it was worthwhile to build them that way. Can you update on the oil consumption pre/post in-frame? Curious on how much you're using in a fresh 6-71. Safe travels!

      @kleetus92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Romans--bo7br Could probably go another size, or two larger on the injectors too... if you can't make it smoke now, you definitely don't have an excess of fuel... so when you add more air with the turbo, you may not see that much of a difference in power. Typically, you add air to clean up the unburnt fuel which is the smoke.
      So if you can't smoke now, you aren't going to see much of a difference.

    When I saw you in the video rebuilding the lower section of that filter housing, I was relieved. That lower section can give you fits of trouble, people take that lower "O" ring for granted.
    I had one of those 382 filter housing give me loads of trouble in a Mack I owned.
    I rebuilt that lower section of that housing several times before I got it to quit loosing prime, actually had the truck die on a set of RR tracks after sitting idling waiting for the train to go by..Nightmare.
    Best advise, make sure there is fuel in the dome tonight, then see if it has gone down in the morning.
    Then after you replace that lower "O" ring, idle the bus for a while, then run it a fairly high RPM and look for bubbles in the dome. Mine would send small bubbles up the dome at high RPM.
    But at idle the fuel level would steadily get lower.
    I know you have dealt with those before, just putting things out there in case I hit something you didn't see before.
    Good to have more power Scotty. Put's a smile on your face when you know your going in the right direction. Governing it back will just make you grumpy, and you'll turn it back up.
    As far as putting your foot in it, and it smokes..........BRING THE SMOKE. Maybe you'll make a snowflake pull over and have to find a safe room.
    Clear sky's and good tail winds.

    I know you have done your homework on the turbo upgrade you are planning. Blower bypass mod, lower compression pistons, bigger injectors.... all things I understand need to be done. I have an 8V71 NA Crown supercoach that I want to also do a turbo upgrade on. I already need new liners, so the compression and injectors are no problem. I have to go in there anyway. Any other MUST do mods (other than the obvious external hardware)? My cooling system is in awesome shape. I've just heard a lot of talk about everything being different between turbo and non turbo block, heads, timing, etc. I'd really like to talk with you more about your approach to your conversion, and the best place to get the parts like the blower tophat, exhaust manifolds, etc. Exhaust is no problem for me. I can fab my own out of SS (I have a TIG). Not looking to do a Cleatus upgrade, I just want to pull hills strong. I am considering a dual turbo setup rather than single for faster spoolup. I just want to be assured that I can do a mild boost on NA block and heads and cam without too much issue. BTW, if you need help fabbing a custom downpipe and such, i can definitely help you out there. Also, where do you source your motor mounts? I tried US coach and they didn't show anything for a Crown on their site, though I suspect the mounts are pretty generic. I want to change the mounts while i have access during my re-sleeving.

    A trick that a bush mechanic taught me was soak an oring in alcohol for a few hour and it will shrink back down. Best to get a new oring but sometimes that is not possible.

    I've always wanted to ask you if you can see the road with those bikes blocking your headlights at night bro.?
    Hopefully you've got clear visual.
    I love your bus bro, it's definitely a true classic they just don't make them like that anymore, and the designer for the Greyhound buses back in the day sure knew what he was doing on the designing features.
    I think your show is awesome too.

    Get a cruise control, the electronic ones are quite easy to fit and take the stress out of long journeys.

    A 10 second improvement on a 0-60 for a bus is insane fast. It must literally feel like a rocket ship now. When you get the turbo, it will feel like you dropped almost 2 tons of weight off your bus instantly.

    If you’re still looking for springs for your bus there is a place on the north side of Davenport not far from where you are called Sadler Power Train. They might have what you’re looking for. I used to drive school bus and that’s where we got all of our replacement springs for the buses.

    Shouldnt your fuel filter bowl be hanging down. I once had an onan in an old sailboat and it had a glass bowl but it was installed hanging down not upside or on top like yours is.

    It's nice to have hard work pay off. Is your engine original to the Bus? I was just thinking about building a second engine for the turbo then doing a swap. All you would need is a shop and $$$$. I had a friend who did conversions on Eagles back in the '70's. He ought busses direct from Trailways. Each conversion came with a new Honda 600 on a tow bar or a knock down golf cart that fit in the belly.

    What does that Detroit tack out at ? My old 350 Cummins tacked our at 2,450 and my top speed with 22.5 tires was 80 and with 24 was 85 . With a return fuel restriction it bumped it up some and didn’t hurt my fuel economy.

    Sounds awesome - all that hard work that you and your son have done has paid off! Just for giggles, have you considered a super charger in lieu of a turbo? From looking at what you said on the four valve installation, it looks like the head has to come off. Just wondering if that is an option.

    • @uliwehner
      @uliwehner 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      detroit diesels already have a roots blower running of the crank. you don't want 2 robbing power. Turbo is the right thing, and they came stock that way. Look at the marine applications and you will see how much power they can make if you let them. as in double of what Lenny makes now

    The filter is probably on the suction side of the fuel pump. 2 minutes of idle probably allowed more air to be sucked in .

    Is there a rebuild for the blower, or a must replace?
    Seem like a wear out part that might suffer some blow-by after a million miles.

    Regarding your comment about speed and self control, I guess we all understand that one. For me, using cruise control helps as I have to make a conscious effort to adjust the cruise speed up or indeed down.

      I never heard it put in those exact words but I've experienced that "I should check the car based on the oil spot on the ground." I had leaking valve covers and power steering lines at the same time before. Accessory belt life was 1-2 weeks. Worst part was it was a 22 year old engine without a drop on the outside before that.
