    Pretty but, arborvitae are spider magnets. KY used to have red twig dogwoods growing in the medians on I-64. In the winter, they were breathtakingly beautiful against the white snow.

I need to revisit some of your past presentations and figure out my landscaping needs. Thanks for sharing with us! I wish I were close to your town. I'd be a "Hoot" doing "biness" with you. You crack me up.
    I don't recall where you are, but I'm assuming somewhere around where I used to live.
    However, I'm now in the PNW where we do arbor vitae well ... but usually what folks plant smells like cat pee. I love the evergreen. I love the colors. My favorite is "Fire chief". Says it grows to zone 8.
    As you're aware, there have recently been some re-classifications, so we're technically in zone 8B at 1000 ft in the Oregon Willamette Valley. A couple of times a year we get below 20 degrees F with about 6 inches (or more) of snow for more than a week. Our worst year I can recall was just after we moved in. 18 inches of snow the first day, and then it kept piling up. Ice brought down limbs. We had to collect snow for a week to cook and flush the commodes (once the power came back on). Will Fire Chief survive that at least once a year? Occasionally, it happens twice a year.
    It's frustrating because over 4.5 miles into town, they're down to 300 ft and can grow things we can't here.
    The opposite, we can grow Madrona where they can't in town.
    Weird how a mere 4.5 miles can make such a difference, even in the same zip code.

    Blush Pink Nandina, on the screen it said zones 3-7. I got all excited because we just don’t grow nandinas here in our marginally zone 6 area. So I looked it up and I think that is misinformation 🤔. It’s a southern plant.

    Help, I have grown hydrangeas from cuttings. Started back in summer and they were doing great, got cold brought them indoors in FRONT of window and now they lost leaves and look like they're dying . What can I do , wanted to plant in yard this spring, I keep them watered when they start to dry out

    • @RealALSK
      @RealALSK 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Was it too close to the window? If it’s near or touching and the windows aren’t the best insulated it can shock the plant!

  • @EducatedSkeptic
    @EducatedSkeptic 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Love the enthusiasm and knowledge, but ... had to laugh at your promoting the red-twig dogwood! We have that growing WILD at our place in Maine, and though the red twigs poking up through the snow are pretty, it's more than a mere nuisance! Every place a branch touches the ground, it roots - to initiate another growth center that then sends shoots out in every direction. Each clump can have 10-20 branches radiating out, and getting up to 2" in diameter - necessitating use of a chain saw to cut them off, before I come in with the backhoe on the tractor to pull the rootball. We spend WEEKS every year hacking and digging this **** up and throwing it into giant burn piles - 20 feet across and 6-8 feet high!!!! And we're only trying to keep three acres clear of it, plus the perimeter of the 2-acre pasture the horses have out front.

    • @skgreenhouse
      @skgreenhouse  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I love Maine! I spent 10 days there this past summer. Some of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen!
      The Dogwood I was showing in the video is completely sterile. It doesn't spread like native ones.

    • @EducatedSkeptic
      @EducatedSkeptic 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@skgreenhouse ... Sterile - THAT would be a relief! But ours is far from that, and it's native. One of two very aggressive, bushy species we have that are omnipresent along old fence lines in particular (courtesy of birds perching there and pooping out the seeds from the berries they've eaten). Have come to love Maine myself, despite the harsh winters - they're what keep us from being overrun by people, malls and highways like eastern Massachusetts. I'm "from away," in that I was born elsewhere, and have only lived in the state for some 42 years now - though my wife was born about 15 miles from where we're living now. We're on 40+ acres of what was part of her grandparents' farm (on her mother's side), and her father's family has been in this area since before the Revolutionary War.
