- I replaced my old John Deere starter with a modern one. The new one is a gear reduction type starter. The starter is smaller in size but still works really well. One difference I can tell about it is that it sounds much different than the old one. It’s much easier to put on and take off versus the old one because it’s smaller in size. So far I really like it and it only cost $134.70 as of January 26, 2024. Please like and subscribe and hit the like button! I’d really appreciate it!

If you take the back off that solenoid, you`ll probably find that the copper washer has gotten stuck in one place and has a bunch of carbon built up to where it`s not making a good electrical contact. My uncle used to flip that washer over and put it back in and it was good to go. I don`t blame you for getting a smaller one. That looks like a royal pain!
I’ve actually taken one apart like that before and done that same thing. I can’t complain too much about this old machine because I know the new crap is a lot harder.
It looks tough, but the alternator on my son`s Jeep Compass was a thousand times worse. I was ready to burn it! Lol

I have a special simideep socket that I use on my Detroit diesel’s starter bolts. They’re 12 point 9/16 like yours. My starter’s are MT39/40 I believe.
I want to get my hands on a 353 diesel or the 4 cylinder one would work also. I’d like to try and fit it in my old army truck.

Yes it is a DB starter. That must be a common thing with them starters then. That thing really works great though!!

I found this one on eBay actually. So far it works really good!! It starts up real fast now.
