  • I travel full-time solo in my RV. That means I'm sometimes in remote places solo. I must be prepared for an animal or human attack because help is usually pretty far away. Over my time on the road, I've considered every scenario I could think of and built an arsenal of self-defense gear, gadgets and weapons to make sure I stay safe. These tools help deter trouble, give me more power in a fight and keep me safe.

Robin, I did order your suggestion for an air horn and the knife! I had forgotten about my empty air horn (I used to use it when my granddaughters would get too far out in the ocean or a lake🤓). Plus I hadn't had a switchblade since I cut off the end of my fingertip making kindling (I think my brother took it🤔). I do carry small box cutters keeping the blades locked partially out in different areas of my rig + 1 on me at all times. I'll be more careful with this switchblade😁

My two cents: Instead of a folding knife you would be better off with a single edge fixed blade knife with deep finger wells for a primary last resort blade. If you have to fight with a blade, please understand that it gets very messy very quickly, and blood is slippery like oil and you will end up losing your knife or hurting yourself or both. Make sure your hand cannot slip onto the blade! Also, try unfolding your knife under duress. If you choose to do this, then you must train for it to get the muscle memory in place so that when the time comes the action will be quick and effective. Fighting with knives isn't as intuitive as one might think. A person who has no training can be easily disarmed and subdued. Fights don't end because someone poked you once, so you must know where and how to attack in order to have the best possible effect on your target. Don't kid yourself. In order to know your capabilities and your limitations you must do some research and at least give yourself some rudimentary training on a semi regular basis if you are serious about defending yourself in a life threatening situation. Doing so can give you the confidence to live outside the fear bubble in which many of us dwell. Don't leave it to luck, level up, survive, and thrive!

Robin, bless your heart. I've been following you and Casey Roman for months now, and I cannot begin to tell you how very proud I am of you....and Casey. Back in the 1980's ('84-90), I full-timed solo in a used Class A motorhome and pulled a 1979 Toyota Corolla behind me. I was a Delta flight attendant (32 years!) and actively flying while I traveled across America from Florida to Oregon. The Tumbleweed and I would move to a new state every 6 months. I'd try to stay somewhere with an airport in fairly close proximity so I could commute to my different crew bases. It worked out marvelously; and I had a ball! There was no internet back then (we were not even using dial-up at the time!). No cell phones. And no GPS. (I actually carried maps!). Your WONDERFUL video here reminded me of the things I, as a single woman, used to protect myself on the road #1) was a starter's pistol. Only fires blanks, looks just like a .22 pistol, and so loud, it could scare the bejesus out of a Hell's Angel. (I still have it!) They're the same thing that's fired to start a race or swimming meet, #2) was my "fake" stick of dynamite. I just took a 1-in dowel 10 inches long, painted it brick red, drilled a hole at the top of one end, and put a 4-inch piece of spleen into the hole for the fuse. And, it honestly worked. One early evening, I pulled into a rest area off I-25 just south of Pueblo, Co. for the night. I cranked up my antenna to get ready for 60 Minutes. As I'm starting a grilled cheese sandwich on the stovetop, a biker came rolling in. (There was no one else in that rest stop besides me) He drove that bike right up to the front door of Tumbleweed and stopped. My first instinct was to grab my "dynamite. "Whatcha doin in there little lady?" When I answered him, he said "well now, why not fix ME one of those grilled cheeses?" As he started to dismount from that bike Robin, I held up that FAKE stick of dynamite....along with my Bic lighter. "One more step closer, I said, and I'll throw this RIGHT AT YOUR BIKE!" And damn if it didn't work! That fool really thought it was real...and off he went." (Thank God!!!) There was one last thing I relied on to keep me safe, and that was the most valuable BOOK I ever owned. A book I'd recommend to every woman who wants to venture out on ANY kind of solo journey. It's called The Gift of Fear and the author is Gavin DeBecker. Since those days in the Tumbleweed, I've driven solo BACK across America in a 33 ft Class A, and I've also paddled many, many miles solo in my kayak in Alaska, along the coast of South Korea, and down the Zambezi River. Remembering Gavin's advice has kept me safe over and over. So, here you gals are now, braving the highways and byways across this great land. Both of you no less in 5th wheels!! Sharing your wonderful experiences and advice on your youtube channels, teaching and inspiring other women to have confidence and follow their dreams. I am so darn proud of you I can hardly stand it!! Keep on truckin' girl, and be safe! You rock!!

Robin (and others) - Be VERY careful about using cheap folding knives. I learned the hard way, and almost had a bad injury when the locking pin that was holding the knife open failed and the knife bent backward and slipped off the piece of wood I was cutting up for tinder. Luckily I wasn't injured. A few days later I went and purchased a "good" knife". I figured that $50 for a good folder was much cheaper than the $500 co-pay for an ER visit.
    Stay safe out there everyone.

I agree completely. I don't have much moolah, but I wouldn't spend much less than $75 for a good multi-use/defense knife. I use the cheeapos for everyday chores, but even then not too cheap as they can break off at a bad time. I suggest practice practice practice to make sure it works as expected.

Also be aware that if you grip your fist around a knife handle and try to plunge it, you may end up sliding your hand down the handle and onto the blade. For example, you go for an attacker who dodges the knife and you hit a hard object instead. There go all your finger tendons....at least.

Amen. And to keep going through them to create muscle memory. Including defensive driving scenario's & how to exit a work place to concert venue, etc. While it was years ago, I recall & had "practiced" (in my mind) some advice given to us by an Officer, during a training session regarding a head on collision. Years later, that ended up saving my life & my passengers. He said that we have a better chance of survival by NOT crossing over & into the opposite side to avoid contact. Instead, take your side of the ditch. One winter night in a rural setting I had just enough time to do just that. I took the broadside hit just as I felt the tires reach the shoulder. Impact to landing backwards (after spinning) was about a 100 ft on our side of the ditch. Due to a concussion, I really do not remember the following 2-3 years. It affects my short term memory to this day. Still, it's better than the alternative. BTW - He blew a .28 & was out on bail before I was off a backboard, it was his 3rd offense.

Enlightened with the safety/security items you reviewed. Another option is a laser pen. I read a story about a lone female camping in Utah out on BLM land at night with no one else around. A truck pulled up uncomfortably close to her so she turned on her lights to let them know she was awake. The idiot did not leave he just sat there in the truck. She waited for a while then got her laser pen and turned off the lights. When she pointed the laser through a window at the truck driver he left in a hurry. He did not know if he was looking at the business end of a firearm with a laser site but took the action seriously. You can always reach for your firearm if that does not work.

Omg! Thank you so much! I attend a university that is two hours away from my home. So while I’m there I stay in our RV, is pretty similar to yours actually, and I have it located in a gorgeous mountain top setting. But it’s way out in the country and the wild life in Ky is literally right outside my door. There are packs of coyotes that I can hear just outside of my street light range all of the time. I had that installed with the utilities and it helps a lot. But by myself, safety is a huge concern. I have ring doorbells and a few other things that I have close at hand but this share of yours has given me ideas I never thought of! Bear spray should have occurred to me! Getting that for sure. The driveway alarms.... BRILLIANT! The bedroom door lock... yes! I installed a chain on the front door but that will only give a few minutes like you said. And despite having the emergency exit device on the bedroom window, the glass breaker is a great idea for those oh shit moments. This was a wealth of information and tips for me personally and I just wanted to say thank you so much! Leaving for school next month will have far less stress than usual! *edit* I hope you are an amazon affiliate, I have my cart loaded with almost $300 of those products to purchase next week. Lmao!

  • @richarddaugherty8583

First, it's great to see that you've given this lot's of thought. Couple of points: Use of force is not a continuum where you start low and work your way up. You have to go to what's going to work for thee situation at hand. That means playing what-if games ahead of time. One can't make this up on the fly or the result is a freeze. The options need to be simple and effective. Fine motor skills go right out the window during body alarm reaction (look that up). For that intruder, I do like the baton you demonstrated, but paired with it I really like at least a 300 lumen flashlight right in the eyes. No one can keep their eyes open when you light them up, especially at night. So blind them, then go to work with the baton either electronically or physically (like if you forgot to flip the safety off). Remember, fine motor skills are gone in an emergency. Here's a good one: www.amazon.com/Streamlight-88065-Professional-Flashlight-Rechargeable/dp/B06VTLLC13/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=streamlight+dual+fuel&qid=1596829846&s=hi&sr=1-3 It takes both CR123 and AA cells depending on what you have available.
Personally for me, my first option is the flashlight and audible alarms before they ever get close. You've got that covered. Next is a firearm along with the flashlight. There are problems with that. The firearm will not be legal everywhere (sigh), and firearms are not for everyone. Be careful about kubatons. They are illegal in lots of places. Think of ordinary household items that can be used the same way.
No weapon works though if you don't have the will to use it. If someone is breaking in, you have to be willing to do severe damage to another human being, up to the point of killing them if you want to stay alive. You will not be trying to kill anyone... you'll be trying to stop the threat. Death may be the result but it's not your goal. You have to understand and convince yourself that it's not your fault they're getting hurt (or dead). If they hadn't attacked, you would never have done anything to them. In short, it's their fault.
Last, check out the Garmin InReach Explorer+ (or the Mini). It has the SOS feature, but also supports 2 way messaging. You won't be using that in a self defense situation but I use it all the time to message my wife when I'm hiking or camping in places with no cell service. It's also your first aid buddy if something happens medically. In that case the 2 way messaging can save your life.
Cheers, wishing you all the best, and keep enjoying the road!

Are you jesting? IF "someone" is trying to break in your RV, or vehicle or attack you while hiking, you're suggesting I should obey the law & not use bear or hornet spray on the attacker becoz the label says, "not to be usedfor purposes other than intended"??
I don't think my "Attacker" is following any Laws when his intention is to do me bodily harm. I will do what is necessary to keep myself & my family Safe.

I use a push brown 5ft. stick as a walking staff. At times I need it to steady a weak ankle/knee esp walking on slippy grass or uneven surfaces. I drilled a hole in it 1" up from the end that I pressed a nail into to function as a "Goad," if needed. The other end has a drilled hole with a tied leather shoe lace which is a good carry option. In brushy areas I can tap ahead of me to chase unseen dangers.

Well put together! I’d like to add also that a good quality Tactical Flashlight with enough Lumens to temporarily blind an assailant is effective in the evening in or outside. I have one from Klarus with 2000 Lumens. It’s also a good idea to have some kind of self-defense legal insurance coverage in the event you do have to defend yourself. If you are fortunate enough to survive it, there will still be criminal and possible civil defense you will need to overcome.Thank you and stay safe!

Hi Robin, I love, along with your humor, the intensity you show in this - it is clear you have thought about this carefully and are willing to do whatever is necessary should the need arise...years ago I took a krav maga class and during the training our teachers, ex-military and police officers, stressed the importance of being able to access that almost feral (no offence) mentality if you are attacked, in which you will do, literally, whatever you have to do to get out of that situation. The only rule they told us, is that there are no rules, you do whatever you have to do to walk (or run) away...

Krav Maga rocks. Everyone should know, and practice the knowledge of the self-defense courses. For no more than it costs to invest for those classes, it's priceless when it comes to your life. It's you or them.

So I love your video. Great ideas. But just like owning a gun, if you don't practice using it, it won't serve you as well as you want. So do you ever do a pretend scenario to see how quick you can get to your gear and how long it takes to respond?

That's a great idea for everyone..... just like with a fire in the home. Everyone alone or not should be ready for anything& time is of the essence! Another suggestion I have is that I keep a baseball bat at my bedside all the time. It's standing up in a box ready to grab at a moment's notice!

I prefer a Holy Bible in my right side😇. And a Flame Thrower🤬 in my left. It’s nice to see something running tired while flaming hot 🥵🥵🥵but inside my rig a pistolized 12 gauge will do the job perfectly well (its trespass to dwelling).

Robin❣ How very thoughtful you continue to be . . . . . with all of the great new items, you still added some that are old hat, to many yet vital info for newbies.
& you always give the prices as you speak of each item, most endearing for removing a bit of unnecessary irritation by having to click them in order to make a decision 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I have my eye on many of these & where you find the time for all of your excellent research, is beyond me.
I will use your link to purchase, as I am able. I've liked, saved & will be sharing this one on several platforms.
