I think I've decided that Bloodraven is my favorite historical character in the ASOIAF universe. Even excluding the whole Three-Eyed Crow thing, even if you treat that as a separate character, Bloodraven is great. He has the ruthless, cutthroat political sense of Tywin and Stannis, he's got magical powers like Bran, he's a bastard who fights for the good of the realm like Jon, he's a spymaster like Varys, he's got the Targaryen connection, he's motivated by love, family and duty, like Ned, and he has deep flaws related to his paranoia and prejudice, not unlike his cousin, Aerys II, The Mad King. He's like a microcosm for all the best and most interesting traits that make characters on ASOIAF so interesting and fun.
And he is a son of Ice and Fire who turned into leader of the Night's Watch, just like Jon and after he's resurrected, Jon will maybe look like BloodRaven because of his ability of warging into Ghost!
Yes he is very nice and good person who loves common people so much he does nothing to protect them in plague, what a man! He killed his ugly traitor brother, what a hero! He feeds Bran paste made from Brans friend Jojen, what a Masterchef!
This story is honestly so hype. It includes all the best elements of ASOIAF: politics, scheming, prophecy, magic, heroism and Bloodraven. Great video, I wish there was more stuff to cover. Maybe Fire and Blood?
exactly, that's why I love the dunk and egg tales so much.. they condense everything I love of the main series in a single, super entertaining, fun to read book. I wish we can at least get the story at winterfell and also the one where they go to Essos..
It just occured to me that I'm surprisingly more interested in seeing the continuation of the Dunk and Egg stories than I am in the main ASOIF series. Maybe I'm attracted to the comparatively smaller scale nature of the stories, maybe the fact that so many of these stories have been hinted at a history in the main series and supplemental material, or maybe I just don't like ice zombies. Either way I hope Martin has the chance to finish telling these characters stories.
It's just a much more streamlined story, with a set endpoint (Egg becomes King or Summerhall), making it so much easier to enjoy the journey, rather than wondering about the end
Other then seeing what happens with euron in the books ide say yea. They slaughtered him in the show, wanna see him perform a crazy ritual or something in the books
I like the idea that maynard is bloodraven in disguise and that bloodraven is taking his job of impersonating a hedge knight and spying at the wedding as an opportunity to have some fun drinking with the guys and make sexsiest jokes It really adds to his character in my opinion: hes not just this mysterious scary looking sorcerer creep, hes also a guy who was probably treated as a freak and outcast his whole life for being a bastard and albino and probably had a very lonely life which he ia trying to make up for now
"Dunk is oblivious to the flirting." lmao He's actually pretty adorable. Thank you for helping condense the book's material. I always find I can enjoy the details when they are laid out in formats like yours.
I did not catch it the first time myself. I thought he was fascinated by Dunk because of him dreaming of him on the Kingsguard, not unlike Daeron's fear of him the first time they meet.
"Gorghan of Old Ghis once wrote that a prophecy is like a treacherous woman. She takes your member in her mouth, and you moan with the pleasure of it and think, how sweet, how fine, how good this is... and then her teeth snap shut and your moans turn to screams. That is the nature of prophecy, said Gorghan. Prophecy will bite your prick off every time." - Marwyn the Mage
And then Marwyn travelled straight to Daenerys, a prophetic character, and crossed the sea, who are invested with ironborn who follow some lovecratian maniac that wants to end the world. Marwyn really is a „do as I say, not as I do“ kinda guy lol.
Yo, mate! Ser Maynard and Lord Bloodraven use the same phrase "a nest of adders"! that's uber specific! Also, George R. R. Martin is so witty, he must have known MORE phrases to have one repeated twice in the same tale, right?
If Bloodraven was impersonating Maynard Plumm, maybe Shiera Seastar also disguising as Bloodraven and ruling in his stead? They were the power couple of Westeros back then.
One thing not mentioned in this video that I hadn't caught in earlier readings, is that Bloodraven totally threatens to kidnap young Aegon due to conflict between Bloodraven and Aegon's father Maekar, and there's a lot of subtle verbal underplay between the two of them about what would happen if Bloodraven tried to do such a power play. Basically, Bloodraven concedes that it's not worth the risk.
The comic adaptions for them are amazingly good. I could imagine panels of the comic used in a slide show as the audio book played to be the peek experience.
"The Sellsword" will probably be when Dunc and Egg travels to Essos because GRRM did also mention that they would make a stop there. They might even encounter the Golden Company and Bittersteel which would be pretty cool considering Bittersteel might not even realized he had a Targaryen under his nose the whole time.
@@spearshake4771 Or there could be POVs of Dunk disguised inside the GC and Egg preparing the Targaryen armies with Maekar, BloodRaven and Aerion Brightflame on Westeros!
Dunk and Egg’s escapades are my favorite A Song of Ice and Fire side stories. They’re so well written and well paced. Super intriguing, great characters, action. All around fun.
@@coldhands2802 Wasn't there a Rebellion and the whole incest conspirancy? That plus the other Southern Kingdoms being annoyed at the Lannisters having too much influence.
Brynden Rivers/Blood Raven is such an interesting character. I love this type of characters which are despised by the many for their appearance or their alleged malfeasance even though they are serving the greater good. Brendyn Rivers is highly intelligent, competent and cunning and use all sorts of means and knowledge for the good of the realm. I'd love to see/read more of him. Thanks Alt Shift X for yet another great analysis :)
He is the best character in ASOIAF,the most interesting. He is a bastard who has come into power,a very daunting sight as hes described as an albino with red eyes and a red winestain birthmark,a sorcerer who practices dark magic,he is the lover of the most beautiful woman who ever existed,he is literally a son of ice and fire,he becomes both kings hand and lord commander,he is ruthless and intelligent, and also the three eyed raven
I enjoyed when Dunk tells Ball to use a tourney lance because it is 4 feet longer than a war lance, just like Baelor Breakspear told Dunk in the first novella. Great throwback that shows Dunk is always learning.
In the section on parallels between Dunk and Brienne, you missed two which are closely linked. The names of their squires have similar meanings - an egg and a pod are both containers within which you usually find an embryonic life form, either an animal or a plant respectively - and both Egg and Pod transform into massively more confident people over the course of the books, fulfilling the potential their names imply.
it’s not crazy. many people think that because he keeps announcing he’s writing other stories or scripts for tv. he’s probably written the whole main story but is having trouble connecting the dozens of intricate plot lines and conspiracy’s going on. he’s essentially written himself into a corner.
There's no way we're getting ADOS. We'll probably get TWOW within the next year... two years... five years... who tf knows, but I think we'll get it. But ADOS? Nah, no way he'll be able to finish that.
Sometimes I pick up a new series and think “huh, this is pretty good. Maybe comparable in quality to ASOIAF” then I come back to the series and realize just nothing compares to the depth of ASOIAF, truly a modern classic
Since I read ASOIAF a couple of years ago, I stopped reading books. I compare every new book to The Song and they're never even close in quality. So, basically, ASOIAF ruined books for me.

@@Brandonhayhew oh wow didn’t even know about that. I knew there were graphic novels for dunk and egg just not for asoiaf. Would you recommend it? I’ve already read the books 🤷♂️
I've truly come to love Martin's use of prophecies being misinterpreted. So often in fantasy they're so cut and dry, but in the Westeros stories, one can cause so much harm by personal interpretation of dreams and prophecies. Martin is a former Catholic and Catholic theologians actually warn against committing wrongs based on personal revelations. One theologian I met said one should just live their life as best as possible and if the revelation is part of God's plan, it will just happen naturally. Yet in Martin's stories, we see the consequences of when peoples try to force their revelations to be made reality. It reminds me of how Dunk says he doesn't know what the morrow brings, only that he can live his life as best as possible
Poor Daemon Blackfyre the 2nd good guy who couldn't live up to his father's legacy, but who could? And loyal Gormon Peake willing to support and believe in his King.
That quote from the japanese philosopher really inspired me in the middle, so I'll leave you with a quote from a wise investment strategist, "There's always money in the banana stand," Very good video, love your work!
I prefer them, too. For me, it's just a matter of taste. The main series is so massive with an incredible amount of moving parts. That isn't a criticism. I can acknowledge the objective quality and brilliance of ASOIAF. I simply enjoy reading "smaller" stories with a more focused cast more.
I agree, however I couldn’t like Dunk and Egg as much if it wasn’t for the main series. It’s everything that’s great about ASoIaF in a nice concise package. However, it’s how it connects to and expands on the main series that elevates it above, in my opinion.
Always wondered, knowing George's penchant for naming characters after real world influences, if Uthor "the Snail" with his unique sigil was named in honour of the Silver Snail - a legendary comic book shop in Toronto.
Of the comparisons between Dunc and Brienne: brienne is also seen at renlys tournament using a shield that has the same symbol as Dunc, a tree with a star
So first off I wanted to say I adore your videos. Your voice is so soothing, yet powerful enough to grasp my attention. Your videos are also edited wonderfully. Nothing overly showy, but not utterly simple in the slightest. Top notch. I was wondering if you're ever planning on delving in the the cosmere at all? The books seem mostly up your alley, and I'd love to hear your opinions and predictions about hidden meanings and upcoming events in the books.
As much as I want more Dunk and Egg tales, I just wish George would finish the main series first. That's a priority because none of the other works hold much weight if the main series is left unfinished.
I just finished reading the Mystery Knight, and am kicking myself for not recognizing Maynard Plumm. I knew there was something suspicious when Dunk mentioned his odd features, but didn't put it together. Thanks Alt!
Thanks for pointing out the Jacobite parallels to the Blackfyre rebellions! I had a couple of distant ancestors who were exiled after the real-world uprisings, so that historical chapter holds a little extra interest for me.
You know what....I have little faith for them to produce the Prequel Series without books behind them when they clearly failed at that in the main series. I stick with these stories.
As long as D&D aren't on the job, and they find people passionate about their work for more than 5 years, then I think we'll be in a good spot. That, or end it around 4 seasons. That seems to be a good number for many great shows.
To be fair, the failure of the main series wasn't really HBO's fault. They were willing to give D&D more time and money to make more seasons but D&D refused, wanting to finish the project quickly But I've seen the casting for House of the Dragon and it's pretty questionable, so I don't expect it to succeed
The scene between Bloodraven and Dunk at the end always kind of reminded of those bits at the end of Terry Pratchett's watch novels in the Discworld series where the Patrician talks to Vimes about everything that happened and what the consequences of it all will be. Bloodraven may as well have said "Do not let me detain you" when he dismissed the two.
when you revealed that maynard is quite literally bloodraven, I never caught that when finishing the book lmao and now I seem to like bloodraven even more. what an interesting guy, thx for the explanation!

And tits! Jokes about tits
Oh god I cant tell you how long I laughed at that Japanese philosopher joke.
Same. The main series will never be finished so I'd rather just get more Dunk and Egg stories instead.
I could live with a silmarillion-like synopsis of asoiaf honestly
I like the idea that maynard is bloodraven in disguise and that bloodraven is taking his job of impersonating a hedge knight and spying at the wedding as an opportunity to have some fun drinking with the guys and make sexsiest jokes
It really adds to his character in my opinion: hes not just this mysterious scary looking sorcerer creep, hes also a guy who was probably treated as a freak and outcast his whole life for being a bastard and albino and probably had a very lonely life which he ia trying to make up for now

Prophecy will bite your prick off every time."
- Marwyn the Mage
probably what happened to Rhaegar, honestly lmao
And then Marwyn travelled straight to Daenerys, a prophetic character, and crossed the sea, who are invested with ironborn who follow some lovecratian maniac that wants to end the world. Marwyn really is a „do as I say, not as I do“ kinda guy lol.
@@SwampGreen14 Marwyn is protected by his hat made of Valyrian steel foil.

Yo, mate! Ser Maynard and Lord Bloodraven use the same phrase "a nest of adders"! that's uber specific! Also, George R. R. Martin is so witty, he must have known MORE phrases to have one repeated twice in the same tale, right?
They also both use the name "Butterbutt" when speaking about Lord Butterwell.
Plumm was definitely BR in desguise.

@@nikhiliyengar1510 You're perfectly right ! I corrected it. It's quite a shame to praise a character and to butcher its name ^^
He is the best character in ASOIAF,the most interesting. The "greater good" of House Targaryen, that is.
Call me crazy, but I really don’t think we’re going to get all those novella’s from George. I doubt we ever even get A Dream of Spring at this point.
it’s not crazy. many people think that because he keeps announcing he’s writing other stories or scripts for tv. he’s probably written the whole main story but is having trouble connecting the dozens of intricate plot lines and conspiracy’s going on. he’s essentially written himself into a corner.

This one was my favourite of the 3, absolutely love Bloodraven. Him being Maynard is so brilliant.
"The Lord Commander", knowing current Martin writing speed, is estimated to be published in next 100 years?

I prefer them, too. For me, it's just a matter of taste. The main series is so massive with an incredible amount of moving parts. That isn't a criticism. I can acknowledge the objective quality and brilliance of ASOIAF. I simply enjoy reading "smaller" stories with a more focused cast more.
probably because each of them is a finished story.
I agree, however I couldn’t like Dunk and Egg as much if it wasn’t for the main series. It’s everything that’s great about ASoIaF in a nice concise package. However, it’s how it connects to and expands on the main series that elevates it above, in my opinion.

As long as D&D aren't on the job, and they find people passionate about their work for more than 5 years, then I think we'll be in a good spot. That, or end it around 4 seasons. That seems to be a good number for many great shows.
To be fair, the failure of the main series wasn't really HBO's fault. They were willing to give D&D more time and money to make more seasons but D&D refused, wanting to finish the project quickly
