I really love your tutorials. Unlike many photographers, you aren't advocating specific equipment or lenses that will make or break the shot. Rather you concentrate on educating people about photography basics and shooting techniques. Great videos.
Hey Cousin, It is vary rare that I actually comment on any videos. I want to thank you for everything! You have helped me learn so much, with new confidence to try new things. The way you teach is fantastic and you make it fun to learn. Everything you teach can be tried right away. You have made me a much better photographer. I did my first real shoot for a group at the weekend for their corporate profiles and used your techniques. They were all so happy with the images and this made me happy.
Ah! Excellent to see you are back! Missed your videos. They are great, and help aspiring photographers such as myself to gain new knowledge or remember old tidbits we may overlook sometimes! Thanks again....
Thank you, Michael. IMO, this is the best vid on youtube on the use of HSS. I must have viewed this clip at least 10 over times and will still watch it again for inspiration. Great job that you have done! This vid just makes me want to shoot more photos.
Thank you for the unobtrusive and quick reminders to like your videos. I very often forget to give a thumbs up and the quick reminder helps. Can't thank you enough for all of your great videos. Very much looking forward to purchasing your new book, "Low-key Bodyscapes". I hope there's a lot of Coxy Dominica in there. Your videos of the photoshoots with her were amazing! It's my favorite kind of photography and you make it look so effortless and often with even just one light. You are a phenomenal photographer!
Great video Michael. And I love the sample pictures. I now know what I will be trying to shoot over this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration. And welcome back. Missed you.
@Johnny, I used the 60x90cm softbox umbrella from Phottix. I think it's called Easy-Up softbox or similar. Awesome quality. Very handy. It also comes with a grid which I did not use for this shoot.
It's a feature of the flash and it will work with any camera. Nikon calls it Auto FP HSS, and the Nikon SB-900 supports it. But your radio trigger needs to support it as well.
iMercury989: Yes, the Nikon flashes do support HSS and yes, you need a radio trigger which supports it as well. I use the Phottix Odin, which is working just fine. But there are also other brands and they might work fine as well. I just did not test them yet. I did try out the Pocket Wizard Mini one and Flex TT5 a couple of years ago when they came out.
Thanks for the response. What was tripping me up is that he was shooting above 250th of a second and yet his background wasn't a dark mess (as we know, a higher shutter speed cuts out more ambient light, darkening the background.) After some digging, I uncovered that HSS no longer acts like a flash. It fires a few repeated pulses, thus acting like continuous light, in which case the aperture-shutter-flash relationship changes again, allowing for a high shutter without blackening the background.
@_Ani: Glad you found it. And yes, it's particularly for speedlights. It's really awesome with speedlights but it would really not work on studio strobes.
Hi Michael, first, I'm from Germany and don't often use the english language, so excuse my mistakes please. Your video ist great, I love this kind of easy portrait with blurry background and this wonderful light. You have a very sympathetic voice and explain in a way, so that I can follow you very well. Now I have a question: What system do you use for your dedicated flash? Is this phottix-softbox for dedicated flashes? I can't find it in the internet. Thanks a lot, Ani
It's nice to have a pretty model to pose for you. This makes experimenting with different lighting techniques even better. I can say that I learned a little from this video. Thanks for posting and sharing these photography tips.
Hi, I really like your tutorials. I am interesting in an advice for what size softbox it is the best to use for a newborn photography (small studio 12x12). to have an effect of nice even soft light. I was looking for the one that you use it in your video 'phottix' but unfortunately they are not available in US
Yes, I love to use this softbox for infants (on a boom, like here: www.zelbel.com/baby-boom) and it's awesome for newborn as well. Does Phottix not ship them to the US? Then how about this one: goo.gl/7ViTQC ? 12x12 would be much too small for my taste, even for newborn photos.
I'm trying to figure out what soft-box your using. Found the phottix page. They have 2 but only side image. I want to order the same exact one your using with the umbrella style mounting. It would be easy better that the speed-mount one i got. What size is yours maybe that'll help me. Appreciate your videos!
Long time no videos. It's great that you are back :o). Got a couple of questions for you. 1. Can one use exposure compensation to reduce the light if you don't have a flash that supports HSS? 2. This is not very clear in the video so I'll ask. Do the flash and radio both have to support HSS? I only one of them supports HSS would this work?
gracias por el excelente video. ¿que equipo me recomiendas para una A7II? He visto el Nissim Air y el Cactus V6, pero este ultimo no se si tiene HSS. gracias
Thanks for the great video! I'm a newbie at flash photography and have been desperately trying to figure out how to balance my flash with ambient light. I've learned that increasing your shutter speed cuts down your ambient light. How then, with such fast shutter speeds (thanks to HSS), are you able to get such a beautiful balance, i.e. where the background isn't a wash of black shadows? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
I have this video among my favorites since quite a long time. I also use Phottix Miltros + flash. Could you tell me the reference of the stand and softbox you used to accommodate your Phottix speedlight? Thanks for sharing al those great videos.
How does a umbrella softbox with the flash mounted "backwards" compare to a regular where the flash comes in from the rear? Bought cases with speedlight.
Similar light quality, not perfectly even, but good enough. I prefer the backwards variant because it is much more compact and allows me to position softboxes in tiny corners of rooms if necessary. On the contrary, for these softboxes you really need an additional boom (like the multiboom) if you want to angle them downwards. They have little wiggle room for angles otherwise.
+Henrik Thuresson Really doesn't matter what kind you use as long as you try to make it work with flash and exposure compensaion. Both take practice and each have strengths and weak points - moreover most importantly if you're using a softbox like that outside use a heavy sandbag or camera bag to weigh it down because it will catch any kind of wind and blow over and ruin your flash. You have been warned.
hi cousin ;o) ! thanks for the great video, helping us to understand flash photography. small question, i'm using a Sony A7 and interested into buying the inexpensive Yongnuo YN568ex II , particularly for the HSS possibilities. i'm already owning the YN-560iii and a Yongnuo trigger RF603 ii but they are not supporting HSS . So the thing is... i can find a HSS capable flash like the YN-568ex, but i'm struggling to find a HSS capable trigger that works on a Sony A7 camera. the RF-622 Trigger from yongnuo is HSS capable but is not compatible for HSS with the Sony ( i read somewhere the sync speed was limited to 1/250s for non Canon / nikon camera's). So do you know any brand of wireless trigger that support HSS for Sony Alpha camera's (the sony A7 in particular) ? Any advice would be much appreciated :) . thanks a lot in advance.
I noticed while you were using the softbox .you was only capturing three quarter length shoots. Any particular reason why you haven't capture full body shots using the softbox . I'm curious to know .
do you recommend a manual flash with this softbox as we have to remove the diffuser sheet every time when we need to change settings ? or prefer to put flash on e.g, full power and keep adjusting light with camera aperture to get our desired results?
Rana Keif. get a yn622-tx trigger(C for canon, N for Nikon), you can control all your speedlight with that trigger. you don't have to go back and forth to the flash to adjust. He mentioned he only fire a hint of the flash power so he might be using only the flash at full power when necessary like when the background is too bright.
Rechargeable batteries are pretty much standard for anyone who works with speedlights a lot. Sanyo Eneloop are very popular and go for the high capacity ones (2000mAh), they cost a bit initially but they will last for 1000+ reuses.
ND filters are necessary for video, for photography HSS and short shutter speed is much more practical. An ND filter affects the viewfinder unless you have an ELV that will compensate for it.

I have the d5200 which is restricted to 1/200 when using a speed light :-( you can achieve similar results if your camera isn't capable of hight speed sync, I use a continuous quartz light for anything over 1/200 sec, great. Yet another great video,
I'd like to see a video using this softbox in studio compared to umbrellas. Also would like to see your shots before editing compared to after. Thanks :)

Juan Dela Cruz You can also buy the much cheaper Youngnou YN603 triggers. They are cheap, reliable and has an enormous reach. And they works fine with the YN568EX II for me.
Thank you, VideoFrank! Even on a sunny day I would need a softbox or an umbrella to get this soft light. Furthermore, I would refrain from bouncing the sun into her face as that would be very uncomfortable for her and would make her squint.

Agreed, if the exposure from the flash is too much you don't raise the shutter speed as that is used to control ambient light. You should of brought the soft box further away from the subject or decreased the flash power.
Thanks a lot, Vilma Salamanca! I'd rather prefer a Phottix Mitros+. If you are on a budget a simple manual Yongnou flash will do as well. But go for guide number 58. It will give a bit more light than the small Canon 430.
Well, I'd say have a look at the Amazon reviews and check if you can live with what you get. I recently talked about my favorite speedlights here: goo.gl/NnWGJh
***** If they only would be rechargeable... By the way, TH-cam does not allow me to answer your other comment with the question. But, no, I did not cool down her skin tones with White Balance. I just shot on Daylight white balance. The color is pretty much how it came out of camera.

How can we shoot in HSS mode in Nikon SB-900. Is this a future of Speedlight or Camera or Both of them? Please give some tips to make this settings.
Hey, seems you live in Shanghai - any plans on coming to Chongqing soon? Would be glad to have a little weekend-workshop here, and as people here say - not only the food in Chongqing is spicy ;)
Unfortunately not, Edward Millership. Your flash and your trigger both must support HSS. What happens in HSS is that your flash is acting more like a lamp than like a flash. Usually it would emit one short burst (flash) of light. In HSS it emits a series of smaller flashes which altogether look a bit like constant light. Please check the link on SmokingStrobes. The linked article explains it much better than I can do it ;-)
Don't use HSS when you are in direct sunlight. The reason it works in this video is because they have overcast or heavy pollution acting as a "diffuser". Even so, they still had to place the softbox a foot away from the models face. In direct sunlight HSS can't compete with the powerful ambient light unless you stick the models head inside the softbox. The old school ND filter method will work better for really sunny days.
How High Speed Sync works is actually really simple. In normal mode, the flash triggers for a tiny fraction of a second when both of the curtains are out of the way, and that exposes the picture evenly. When the shutter speed is so high that the two curtains are both constantly partially hiding the sensor, HSS makes the flash emit light for the whole time of the exposure in order to create even lighting.
A rough description of HSS above 200-250 the first shutter curtain and the second shutter curtain start to go so fast that the slit between them is narrower than your image and the faster your setting the narrower this slit is as it progresses across your sensor. A standard flash setting would only fire one burst and only effect the area of the image that the slit happens to be exposing the rest would be dark. HSS does many bursts as the slit progresses across the sensor.
I have a Nikon D610 (it says it does Auto FP at 1/250th) and a METZ 52 AF-1. Will I be able to go over 1/250th? It is something I don't have clear in my mind. Thank you!
You can also achieve the same effect-using your normal sync shutter speed and a - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter if you set your flash exposure to F/5.6 you would then set your aperture to F/1.4 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but significantly less depth of field.?
I really love your tutorials. Unlike many photographers, you aren't advocating specific equipment or lenses that will make or break the shot. Rather you concentrate on educating people about photography basics and shooting techniques. Great videos.

just wonder how to put the trigger and flash both on top of the camera to shoot weddings? Thank you for great videos!
Just use a Mitros+ speedlight. It's a Speedlight and an Odin radio trigger all in one. It's awesome!
@_Ani: Glad you found it. And yes, it's particularly for speedlights. It's really awesome with speedlights but it would really not work on studio strobes.
great to see you making videos again :-) what camera and lens were you using?
HE'S BACK!!!!
Man I am so glad your back!
Can't get enough of your vids. Please post more often! :)
Very appealing light. Well done!

Great information. What was your speed light settings for this shoot?
nice to see you back missed your videos :)
hey cousin im here in jamaica really like ur works been watching all ur videos on lighting they are very helpful real talk.
Great vid! I like Cousin Lin as well. What I liked a lot also was seeing how you use your gear bag as the counter weight for the flash stand.
Great observation, OwHiTeLiOnO! Thank you for that!
good job , want to ask you about something flash will not over come the sun in summer at noon ? i've canon 430exll it looks like gives nothing lol :D
It's nice to have a pretty model to pose for you. This makes experimenting with different lighting techniques even better. I can say that I learned a little from this video. Thanks for posting and sharing these photography tips.
I don't have access to a pretty model unfortunately but I do have a statue in my backyard that I can practise lighting techniques on.
Hi Michael ! Thanks for the interesting tutorial. Did you set the flash to TTL? If not, what power setting did you use ?

Awesome tutorial. Whats the softbox model by the way?
Great video.... Which speedlite you would you recommend 430exii or 600? Or u think 430exii light is enough ?
what's the size of the softbox, your results are so soft. almost like natural light. is it because as you mentioned, you just add a hint of the flash?
Hi threre!Great tutorial.just wondering what stand and softbox model are you using?thabk you
Long time no videos. It's great that you are back :o). Got a couple of questions for you.
1. Can one use exposure compensation to reduce the light if you don't have a flash that supports HSS?

Thanks for sharing al those great videos.
Hey, you mentioned that you wanted just a pop of fill light; what power setting did you use for the flash and how did you work this out?

Adding alot of flash power to an already brightly lit scene is 'usually not the brightest idea' hahah nice one!
Was the ambient light overwhelming your flash by the water/skyline so you had to move to the wall for HSS?
Dear Mike, do you use ETTL in a master / slave setup when shooting indoors with multiple flash?
do you recommend a manual flash with this softbox as we have to remove the diffuser sheet every time when we need to change settings ? or prefer to put flash on e.g, full power and keep adjusting light with camera aperture to get our desired results?
Rana Keif. get a yn622-tx trigger(C for canon, N for Nikon), you can control all your speedlight with that trigger. you don't have to go back and forth to the flash to adjust. I was just about to ask if I could use an ND fader. If it only affects the viewfinder, then I'm buying that $60 flash.
ND filters are necessary for video, for photography HSS and short shutter speed is much more practical. An ND filter affects the viewfinder unless you have an ELV that will compensate for it.
I am very curious to what the flash contributed to the photo in comparison to how it would have looked without a flash. (I had a discussion on this subject, whether it would reduce softness of the 'natural light') Do you have a video that addresses this?

Johnny what kind of Radio Control are you using on your camera.
It's the Phottix Odin radio controller.
I have the d5200 which is restricted to 1/200 when using a speed light :-( you can achieve similar results if your camera isn't capable of hight speed sync, I use a continuous quartz light for anything over 1/200 sec, great. Yet another great video,
You are great on 'American Dad'.
This is the perfect comment
I'd like to see a video using this softbox in studio compared to umbrellas. Also would like to see your shots before editing compared to after. Thanks :)
"...usually is not the brightest idea". I see what you did there! ;)
pun intended
good shoot~
this is some question:
when I set the speed over 1/200s,the flash can't be synchronous.
how can I shoot the pic with high speed sync?
I really want to know about the setting detail .
Thank you `
Gang Liu you need to get yourself a flash and a trigger than can support HSS. For example the yongnuo 568EX II and the YN622-TX trigger.
Juan Dela Cruz You can also buy the much cheaper Youngnou YN603 triggers. They are cheap, reliable and has an enormous reach. And they works fine with the YN568EX II for me.
Nice video. On a more sunny day, you could also use a simple reflector instead of an HSS flash.
Thank you, VideoFrank! Even on a sunny day I would need a softbox or an umbrella to get this soft light. Furthermore, I would refrain from bouncing the sun into her face as that would be very uncomfortable for her and would make her squint.
Hi Michael,This softbox can shoot full-length portraits on location, isn't it ?

All of them will need to be capable of HSS
camera, flash and trigger must be hss capable
so you guys know, to do this trick you need:
1) flash capable of high speed sync. usually a canon flash for canon, nikon flash for nikon camera.
2) remote trigger with TTL capabilities.
if you have "dumb" radio triggers, like old school pocket wizards or anything without TTL, this wont work.
you can however use nikon CLS if u have compatible camera and flash. requires line of sight though. CLS should work w/ a softbox if flash is outside of it. its not super reliable outdoors though.

"Adding a ton of additional light when you already have too much light is usually the brightest idea"
Shooting with the Odins I see. Those are awesome triggers!
Hi, what remote trigger are you using in this video?
Beautiful shots. Very informative.
Thank you so much, Tony!
what bracket are you using for your speed light
Michael what was the name of the song in this video, and where can i purchase it?
I love your videos, keep posting!
Great job, and an easy to understand explanation! Thank You!
Agreed, if the exposure from the flash is too much you don't raise the shutter speed as that is used to control ambient light. You should of brought the soft box further away from the subject or decreased the flash power.
link to buy the radio control for the speedlight please!
is your flash higher speed the one that allows your camera shutter speed go higher ???
Gosh, you're amazing. But as an amature what flash would you recomend for outdoor? I was looking at 430 canon
Thanks a lot, Vilma Salamanca! I'd rather prefer a Phottix Mitros+. If you are on a budget a simple manual Yongnou flash will do as well. But go for guide number 58. It will give a bit more light than the small Canon 430.
Thanks !!! You're awesome
Do you recommend any of the Yongnuo brands that have high speed sync capabilities?
Well, I'd say have a look at the Amazon reviews and check if you can live with what you get. I recently talked about my favorite speedlights here: goo.gl/NnWGJh

Yes, thanks. I have come to realise that, I am using Calumet Pro triggers. I suppose its a place to start :)
sorry i still don't understand how do you do HSS. do you use any extra equipment other than flash and trigger?
+along ilham If your remote trigger and your flashes support TTL on your camera (usually Nikon or Canon) then you have all you need.
what size softbox are you using in this video?
He uses probably 140 x 80 ? Im using this dimensions
Hello again, will this work on nikon d300s camera? What about vivitar 285 flashes
Thank you!
Your camera and the speedlight support hig speed synch (HSS), so you can use shorter synch times as well (for details see the instructions).
MrJueKa Thank you very much!:)
Thank you for the information! Love your tutorials.
Good stuff as usual, love your vid's please keep them coming..
What power do you set your flash?
Thank you, Michael for your videos. Look forward to Them! Cousin Meinhofer.
