In the 1980's I worked on a 1974 Mercury Comet that had a 250 cu in 6 cylinder that put oil in the radiator and the Garage I worked at the Boss had me pull the head and he had another head redone put that on and cleaned out the cooling system and ran it down the road and 2 miles of driving it did the same thing, so I pulled the head off took the oil pressure sending unit out and took a 30 lb freon tank welded a bung and plug and a tire valve in the tank and put 3 quarts of motor oil in the freon tank and filled the tank with 75 lb of air put it in the sending unit turned tank upside down turned it on and oil came through the lifter valley and you could see the crack in the coolant passage where the oil entered into the cooling system, this tank setup is great for newer engines if rebuilt you can prime the whole engine this way if there is no distributor to prime the engine as newer engines are distributorless!!!!!
The mayonaise in the oil fill cap as I like to call it, I used to have it all the time in winter in my economic car. In my case it was due to mostly driving small distances and the engine not being able to get the moisture out of the oil and so it showed as the mayonaise in the oil cap. Could be A factor in that case as well maybe? It's why I installed A block heater that I use in winter and now the problem is fixed for me. Love your channel and the way you go about the diagnosing.
Interesting video. Cylinder compression is greater than than coolant system pressure, this is a more a case of engine compression leaking through head gasket into coolant system rather than coolant leaking into engine, but when car engine is standing some coolant will find it's way through the head gasket into the engine. if water gets into a cylinder while standing this can cause damage if the engine is turned over on compression stroke.
If that is the original engine, I'm impressed it lasted 217k miles. But, like you said the numbers on the valve cover would lead someone to think the engine has been replaced with a used engine.
Why not just replace the head gasket since the engine has lost compression due to a bad head gasket. I'm no mechanic nor do I have any solid background on cars so I'm really just asking for my understanding. Thanks man for these great repair video you make. They are really helpful for some of us.
Because its really not that simple to slap another head gasket. you would need to resurface the cylinder head and possibly might have some cracks at wich point the cylinder head is pretty much junk. You can pretty much find this same car on marketplace for 700 bucks
It can be repaired but it can be costly due to this car uses inferior material might have crack block and piston. It's never going to be only the gasket. This is a throw away car.
Did the compression gauge have a Shrader valve to prevent back flow? The sound/crank speed and oil in the coolant do indicate blown head gasket. Oil on the #2 coil indicates leaky valve seal???
The way your compression gauge was pulsing, it looks like the Schrader valve may be removed, preventing the gauge from holding pressure. Happened to me a few times.
They have one of the weakest driveline out there. Head gasket failure!! Those ecotechs are almost as bad as the eco boosts on the fords. Tow it to the boneyard and hand him the ownership. Great video!!! 🇨🇦
the way it sounded cranking fast did the timming belt snap ? i have a 2007 aveo tht did sounded the same and maybe head gasket was leaking for awhile also sure was well mixed
Good stuff Deo! I would love to see a video where you talk about your journey from Calleva to KIT's - would love to hear some of the challenges you faced while making the transition and everything that goes into both starting up and maintaining a shop (i.e. location scouting, leasing process, approval process, construction, business logistics etc.)
Do these engines have a sensitive head gasket ie, the oil and coolant galleries are very close to eachother? If so then this design engine should be treated gently, especially in very cold winter conditions - always warm the engine before driving off.🐞
🎼🎵 "The milkshake brings all the boys to the (junk) yard." 🎶 😅😂 Saying this, I was always a Chevy guy growing up for DECADES. Granted, looks like engine was neglected, but the old 235 cu 6cyl & 283 cu were LITERALLY, "Like a Rock." Not anymore. 🙄🇺🇸
@NeoAndersonReloaded Lol, Hahah, I don't wanna be the chevy collector, But I'm thinking about buying it, what do you think? it can be our parts vehicle
Suggestion, Make sure the customers tow these junk cars out of your shop in a timely fashion if they don't fix them. Or your shop will turn into a Junkyard
In London these engines are good for around 50k miles then water starts leaking from everywhere over heating the engine blowing the head gasket ! Got 2 of them with blown engines in my car park (not mine) I tell people stay away from vauxhalls as they all have this waste of time engine also !
Before wasting an hour or more writing up three estimates, perhaps you should explain to the customer that the total on the cheapest one will still be higher than that old Sonic is worth after the repair. Recommend junking it. I don't know too many shops that would in good conscience recommend fixing that thing.
Bro. It could be the head gasket or the oil cooler under the exhaust manifold on this vehicle that causes the oil to mix. Get a complete oil cooler. I got my butt kicked before replacing only the cooler gasket. Replace the radiator. You have to drop the front bumper to get the radiator out. Drop some oil in the cylinder and see if the compression returns before you make the call
Those sonic and Cruz cars are throw away cars. Too much non sense problems. I do head gasket jobs but not for these throw away cars. A Used engine is most likely same drama or some other internal issue. A reman or rebuild might be the only choice
Disagree with you both. My uncle did this to our 2013 Chevy Cruze and he found a cheap good used engine, did the work himself and sold the car at a profit. Strong flex 💪
My hats off to any mechanic who can fix a disposable car.

The needle is jumping but not holding pressure. Doesn't the compression tester have a schrader valve in it? Looks like it jumps up to 55 psi.
